I've used dime store picture frames for dioramas before. It also leaves you with a small sheet of glass to work on. It's dead flat for cutting tape and stencils, and for snipping etched parts. I cover the edges with tape to eliminate sharp sides.
I have only just found Gary's channel. I can assure you most people of a certain age would have had the idea. Given all of the extras to recreate that Katy. So it is a major leap of faith that you were the only person to think of it. Anyone that loved the original film, Gary included, would have had that idea. I bought the Airfix for Icr cold and the Gecko for the Queen. Both with relevant dioramas.
Glad I found your posting. I'd never heard of the film before, but a Google search was able to find a website showing the entire film. A very good drama. First rate. Great diorama of the KATY as well. Excellent work!😎👍
Great. Ace film, would always be watched when the BBC showed it, and other of that genre leading up to Remembrance Day/Sunday. Only thing I didn't see, noted when others have built the model, is the name "Katy"..
Gary great job, as a note Concertina wire (Barbed Wire) generally has support poles spaced along it which makes it harder for someone to drag it out of the way, a few poles might make it easier to shape.
That's what I thought, but in the film there aren't any. Probably just got some wire unravelled for the shot! Maybe a few cross-frames now and again might work.
Gary, for the sandmat, could you get a strip of thin corrugated cardboard and just push the staves into the ready made corrugations between the layers? BTW 12mm at 1:35 scale is 16.5" in old money :) Re painting it, perhaps paint it /before/ rolling it up and fixing it to the fender? Paint it and just leave one small area untouched for gluing, then stick it to the fender. Then just weathering to do when it's stuck down. Re attaching hooks.. perhaps solder them and then just file the join down until you're happy with it? That may make life a bit easier :) The map is a //lovely job// btw.. very impressive :) The only /tiny/ criticism is the road should be at least twice the width, as there's nowhere for vehicles to pass each other at the moment.
Cheers julian - good idea there. Didn't have any corrugated paper/packing but that's a good tip - as is painting it before it goes on of course but I got impatient!!
Gary, a very nice diorama, not too complicated to detract from the Katy, minefield a good idea. The additional detail added to the Katy was more than worth the effort, the Katy pops, thanks for sharing
Hi Gary.....Nice build! Really glad you don't kick the arsenal out of "super detailing" & just produce a satisfying job. FYI the yellow number 5 is the bridge classification (weight) not divisional marking & still used today. Looking forward to the next one.
That was a great instructional video, I am just in the middle of doing my first diorama, and some of the tips you gave me will help so much. Bloody good job. Thanks Gary
I need a dust free chamber as well as long as it keeps flies out as well. Varnished a model today and 1 minute later a small fly decided to land on it right in front of me and couldn't take off again. Had to get the tweezers out to remove it, fortunately the varnish wasn't dry so you can't tell it was there.
@@garys_stuffI've seen people not doing it on purpose to achieve a cracked earth effect! Das clay can be a bit finicky to work with though, you can never predict how much it will crack. I wonder if using a blow drier would help achieve that effect
Well worth a pint,Gary. 🍻Well done on all of it👍. I thoroughly enjoyed your build of the Katy and this diorama base is great👍😀. If we are lucky, someone will make a ,Ice Cold, four figure set,I'm struggling to find a good Sylvia Simms 😁
Gary, that is a stunning model and diorama... 🙂 Beautiful results! To my shame, I've still never seen the film 'Ice Cold In Alex' (that I know of - may seen as a small boy, but can't remember!), so I'll have to rectify that soon! I like that Airfix gave all the right decals without being obvious about it (even having the small "Katy" name under under the bonnet serial numbers....). A nice touch, without troubling any licensing issues! 😀 Great stuff; I've enjoyed watching this build, and am going to have to hit that purchase button on Airfix's website... 🙂
Excellent Gary. I'm just finishing a 1/72 Malta Spitfire and I want to display it in a revetment on a dusty airfield - this looks like a great template.
Superb job of the kit & diorama. Really good, you have every reason to be pleased with the results. Many thanks for the video series & diorama- gave me many ideas to try
Love your channel, this ambulance really impressed me so I went and ordered one. The diorama is really cool . Not to offend but maybe a couple of figures in future sometime. Well done keep up the good work Gary.
Tumbleweeds even, Brilliant!! That sir, is chock full of great tidbits for any modeller. Well worth every effort you put into it. Appreciate you sharing the video too. I'm gonna need to brew a fresh pot of ☕ and enjoy this a few more times 🐢
Great series of videos Gary. Before I started my build I watched the film and like you I have included many of the features shown. I did notice mud flaps on the mud guards of the front wheels which I made and fitted. Hopefully at some point figures will be available. Looking forwards to the next build.
Bravo, Gary! That looked like a lot of fun! Lots of great hints and tips as you built it up. It's the perfect setting for the K2 as you've modelled it. Apart from adding a figure for scale, I would add a final touch. Grind up some chalks to match the colour of your groundwork and dust up the Katy, heavier towards the bottom and wheels, to integrate it into the base. Thoughtful and well executed! Cheers!
This is a fantastic diorama, Gary. You've done a great job on the weathering and I really like the small details like the sand mats and the map. "Dames and mines. Lovely party" :)
Great job gary and allways liked that film hope you don't mind but a little detail on the diorama tyre tracks from katy driving into mine field behind.
Wow, Great job on the diorama. I'm looking at doing a 1/72 scale Kittyhawk flown by Wing Commander James F. (Stocky) Edwards RCAF. Desert Scene, so I really liked some of your techniques, very helpful.
Looks great Gary, simple and very effective. I think the idea of using a picture frame for the base is ace. Wouldn't it be nice if someone could market a set of figures to match. Sadly, I think Sylvia Syms is the sole survivor of the cast of the film. I've had similar problems to you with barbed wire but your soldering it seems to do the trick. Looking forward to your next build. Regards, MIKE.
@@garys_stuff : Well at least the Gecko comes with a very unofficial figure of Princess Elizabeth, as she was then.... Mind you, seeing a different review of the Gecko looks like the engine cowling/radiator grill is too wide and chunky, whereas Airfix have it looking correct! Maybe a diorama with the Gecko having both engine covers opened (so the bonnet doesn't look too fat), and Her Majesty herself stood next to the green version could look pretty good! Just be needing a nice muddy English diorama for it...!! 😀
I thought of that after I had finished building the kit. Didn't have any suitably sized tyres lying around. Next time I'll keep the spare handy and use the chassis as the template! Cheers Garry.
Turned out brilliant Gary.. Pick mine up shortly already trying to bodge up a John Mills figure from a previous kit British N Africa figure Tamiya. I'm thinking on a slope with starting handle scene dio.
THAT'S a very nice model ! Good diorama. So you didn't fancy the uphill scene then. Lol. How come nobody swore at Sylvia Sim when she let go of the starting handle and Katy sped off back down the hill. I did...and I was only watching !! Anyway, you deserve a Carlsburg lager, it's worth waiting for.
Thanks mate! I did fancy the uphill scene but no-one does figures for it! I think their response to Sylvia messing things up was a commentary on comradeship under extreme circumstances, especially as Anson hadn't exactly covered himself in glory some of the time. And good old stiff upper lip in the face of adversity - we get setbacks but we buckle up and overcome them.
@@garys_stuff Of particular interest to my Dad. He was one of 5 survivors from the Battle of Knightsbridge. The film was set in June 1942 as they closed the Tobruk perimeter and evacuated all non essential personal and equipment and set forth to Alexandria. Anyway...it was very hot !
@@garys_stuff Thank you...although like most veterans, they say that the 'Hero's' are still there. The troops who took part in the first siege of Tobruk which lasted 10 months were the original 'Desert Rats'. A name given to them by 'Lord Haw Haw'. The Astralian troops adopted the long tailed Kangaroo rat as thier Logo or badge on honour. After the Battle of Gazala in June 1942 the 8th Army had the little rat adorning their vehicles.
Classic mistake everyone doing an ice cold in alex diorama forgets....Ice cold in alex k2 had its body and cab removed from it's original 4x2 chassis and mounted on a 4x4 canadian Chevrolet truck chassis so it could cope with the sand, and the emblem to the radiator grille top was missing.,otherwise nice model.
Gary, I'm speechless. Been following you for some time, and your skills have advanced amazingly. Looks fantastic, with not a great investment of time or money. Looking forward to building my first kit in over 40 years. Have to brush paint, and struggle with my disability, but with patience and help from my friends,I hope I can do it justice. Also, does anyone have an opinion about the 2nd generation Humbrol acrylic for brush painting an entire model?
Vallejo Air acrylic paints are very thin, and with a very little extra water, they brush-paint very well indeed; may need a second coat, just use a fat brush on large flat surfaces, and go steady and smooth, and it'll look great! Vallejo are readily available on Amazon UK, and not expensive... Good luck with your model 🙂
