cannot overestimate how popular the Austin Powers series was at the time - all those big names are there because it was basically THE big comedy at the time - all the quotes and one liners are part of anyone's vocabulary if they were the right age at the time, the whole thing was huge!
I still remember the ads, "if you only see 1 film this year see Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace, BUT if you see 2 films, see Austin Powers in Goldmember. " It was almost as significant as Star Wars coming back

The mole joke came from an event that Mike Myers went to and he heard two college girls talking about him. One of them spotted him and asked the other if that was Mike Myers and the other said, "That's not Mike Myers. If it was him he'd have that big ugly MOLE on his face." And girls kept saying mole multiple times throughout the conversation. And Mike said every time they'd say "Mole" he felt like he got slapped in the face.
Michael Caine did play Harry Palmer in a few spy movies, that Austin Powers is influenced by in addition to Bond. So it's still an homage, though not as well known.

At the time I was a little disappointed they didn't cast Peter Wyngard as Austin's Dad, since Jason King appeared to be the overwhelming influence on APs look - but the Harry Palmer glasses are more than enough of an influence to justify Caine (quite apart from the whole sixtiesness of his early career).
That _Daddy Wasn’t There_ tune is performed by the band Ming Tea, which includes Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles, and Matthew Sweet. When appearing in the Austin Powers movies, they perform under the respective pseudonyms Gillian Shagwell and Sid Belvedere. That opening guitar riff and refrain just _scream_ Matthew Sweet. Hoffs is married to Jay Roach, the director of the trilogy.
That helicopter is a normal AH-1 Cobra, and, the fact that it seems so skinny was an intentional desin aspect of it. It was designed to be so skinny to present the smallest possible target to ground fire.
I think they actually asked Sean Connery if he wanted to play Austin's dad but he said no. Well Michael Caine did play a similarly bespectacled spy back in the 60s so it still fits.
Knowing the many other huge film roles he's turned down, that doesn't surprise me. Just like the others, he probably didn't "get it" when he was handed the script.
The helicopters are "skinny" because they are attack helicopters designed to destroy things, not transport troops. The smaller profile allows them to be faster, more maneuverable, and harder to hit compared to helicopters designed to transport troops and equipment.
@@Deukish I'm not an expert by any means, but if memory serves - Cobras are used by the USMC. Are they smaller than Apaches to make them easier to transport on ships or because they are more used for close in support of troops as opposed to say - laying waste to an entire tank column? Not saying they can't be used to destroy tanks....just talking about the jobs that are their primary function.
@@fenix6297 The Cobra is old. Like, it used the same engine, rotor and transmission as the Iriquois, a utility helicopter which came into service with the US military in about 1960. It;s not so much that it's small, it's that the Apache is the bigger, better helicopter built for a similar role as the Cobra.

This movie shaped my entire sense of humor. I watched it all the time as a kid and when I recently watched it as an adult I laughed at every joke. 10/10 movie.

You do realise that the mole guy (Fred Savage) is the little boy being read the bedtime story in The Princess Bride? Imagine being in a cinema when no-one knew who the cameo guests were and seeing that intro. When I saw it, the audience went nuts in disbelief.
This one is my favorite simply because I laughed the most throughout. Pound for pound, I thought it had the most and the best gags. The celebrity cameos were not "Look at me" so much as they were "This comedy franchise is a cultural sensation, and I want to be a part of it!"
I get your arguments. Maybe I should warm up a bit more to the third one. It has definitely the most variety and good writing. But my favorite has always been the second movie. Because basically Heather Graham. 😅 But also some of the jokes and Austin had the best fitting German voice actor in the second movie imo. As did Doctor Evil and all the other characters. I think they changed some of the VAs between movies....
Felicity (girl from 2nd film) ended up hooking up with Past-Austin. If you remember, Austin went back in time only a few minutes after she died to save her. That Past-Austin hooked up with her during a credits scene.

when I was in high school I had a biology teacher named mister stohl who had a giant mole right below his eye. he had been teaching for years and it was never an issue but within a year of this movie coming out he had the mole removed
This franchise uses so many references from the 1960's. The swinging London photographer is lifted from Blow Up (1966). The umbrella sequence at the beginning comes from the French romantic musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964). Austin talking through the gay dude to Foxy is based on a scene from After the Fox (1966) in which the intermediary was a donkey or a mule.
It definitely was not a "show off look who I know" at the beginning. It was more a play on how famous Austin Powers is in both real life and the semi-fictional world that is portrayed in the movie.
I think the reason they re-hash the space objects / penis / boobs routine is because there is so much slang vocabulary to work with. They probably came up with so many penis terms the first time that they couldn't use them all, but they were to good to discard, so they brought them back to use in the sequels and it led to cameos then blew up from there. Of course if you're going to lampoon penis terms, then it's only fair to give equal attention to breast and vagina jokes as well.... and I never got tired of it either.

Mike Myers dad is British, Mike spent time in the UK in the gigging and appearing at the Edinburgh festival, the 1st time I saw Mike on screen was in the 80's, he was parodying the Wide Awake Club (a kids tv show) called the Sound Asleep Club, he co-starred and toured with Neil Malarkey who also appears in the other Austin Powers movies, he played the Doctor in Goldmember.
the AH1 cobra helicopter gun ship is just a slight redesign of the UH1 huey ( iroqouis , the helicopter you usually see in vietnam movies , basically they share the skids the tail assembly the engine and main rotor , a gun ship dosnt need the cargo area and being narrow makes you a harder target so thats what you end up with

Surprising trivia. "Daddy Wasn't There" was written by Mike Meyers and Matthew Sweet and performed by Ming Tea. Mike created Ming Tea back on SNL. He sings, Matthew Sweet plays bass (his album Girlfriend is fantastic), Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles) is the leaf guitarist, Christopher Ward is on rhythm guitar (he's a big deal in Canada on Much Music), and Stuart Johnson on drums. Mike created Ming Tea as a spoof of 1960s music and everyone used fake names. He was Austin Powers. His wife said he should develop the character more and wrote the first film, which was directed by Hoffs' husband. He did all three and the band appears in all with this the biggest part. Hoffs originated the name Shagwell.

Yes! I was just starting to read "if you want more Mike Myers" and already that axe murderer movie popped into my head. 😅 I, too watched it after it got recommended to me in a comment section. And to me, it is FAR from being as funny as something like Austin Powers or Wayne's World. But certainly better than shit like The Love Guru. 😅🙈 It's also kind of a different genre, like more of a romantic comedy. But a romantic comedy that strangely stuck with me. Maybe because the lead actress is SOOOOO lovely. 😍😍🥰 And they definitely have chemistry there. Oh and btw, I smelled the ending twist from like a mile away. There were only small doubts. And of course, Mike Myers has a different voice actor. He ALWAYS has.
Mike Myers Did the Wayne's World Movie, which I thought was hilarious (I was in High School at the time, so we all loved it, and SNL was big). Then after a few other things, a post SNL Myers did "So I married an Axe Murderer....which I thought was awful, and lead me to believe he was going to be like other SNL stars who would flop in films and fade away...... Then he did Austin Powers, and the rest is history.....eventually.

All right. I watched it now. And I gotta say. It´s pretty dang good. A romantic comedy with a lot of heart and great direction. But I guess the original comment was pretty nostalgia driven, because imo it´s PRETTY predictable. However, I would recommend it, it´s definitely worth watching. But not necessarily worth reacting to. Idk, it´s pretty generic overall. There are better more modern romantic comedies with a similar blueprint like My Best Friend´s Wedding (which I rated a perfect 10/10 btw) or Just Married with Ashton Kutcher and R.I.P. Brittany Murphy. I hold that movie to a very high regard. But nonetheless, So I Married An Axe Murderer is DEFINITELY worth your time. I was NEVER bored, not for a single second and I´m having a hard time thinking of any negatives or things worth criticizing about it. It has a ton of charm and for a 1993 movie GREAT directing! It kind of reminded me of Clue in some parts. Again: DEFINITELY worth watching!

The "skinny helicopter" is an AH-1 Cobra, an attack helicopter first designed during the Vietnam War for armed escort of troop-carrying helicopters as well as close air support for soldiers on the ground. It was eventually replaced by the Army with the AH-64 Apache, but highly upgraded versions are still in service with the Marine Corps. The thin profile is intentional, as it makes the Cobra a more difficult target to hit head-on.

Mike Myers honored Sean Connery, and his portrayal of James Bond, by telling Connery his Bond movies inspired him to create his Austin Powers movie franchise. Meyers told this directly to Connery at the American Film Institute annual event where Connery received the AFI Life Achievement Award.
The whole outtake/gag reel from this film is a must see as well. Letting Mike Meyers just run with a gag produces so much good material they can’t hope to use it all. His riff on the Mole is hysterical, and bit with Goldmember and Dr. Evil riffing on “fajah” just keeps going and going and has some major gems that unfortunately ended up on the cutting room floor.

In 1997, Tea Ming release his single "BBC" that was part of the first movie (International Man of Mystery) as ending credits soundtrack. Daddy wasn't There was composed for Goldmember. The name Ming Tea is taken from a 1960's Italian movie called "The 10th Victim" which features a company named Ming Tea.

Britney Spears role in this was due to her own desire to be in the movie and specifically to be a fembot. The band Austin plays with actually has a pretty famous member. Susanna Hoffs is the brunette guitarist. Hoffs was a member of the band The Bangles who were pretty big in the 80’s. While all the members sang Hoffs was the lead singer and the standout star of the group. She was and still is married to the director of the Austin Powers movies Jay Roach. Also I think she may be a vampire, because she doesn’t appear to age. She’s in her 60’s now and looks not that different than she did in these movies aka smokin’ hot.

I still believe there should have been a 4th one where Scott is the main threat, is genuinely evil, doesn't do over the top death traps or schemes, uses the time travel to go back to the 80s and bet on the stock market (like #2 wanted in the 2nd one) and has his mother at his side. Obviously, Austin would be incapacitated in some way so it would have been up to Dougie (and Mini-Me) to use their knowledge of evil to defeat that which he created.
I always assumed that Heather Graham’s character from the second one took off with of the one Austin Powers as two of them was too much. And she decided to go with the Austin from the future as the other Austin was “so five minutes ago”.
3:00 You nailed it! That his how HUGE Austin Powers became by the early 2000s. It came to a point that the one-liners, and the catchphrases, and the obscene jokes, all became so universally recognized and beloved across so many demographics and generations. It was one of those rare things where almost everyone saw it, and almost everyone knew the aforementioned things by heart. It establishment a permanent spot in American culture.
I wasn't expecting much from this, because the 2nd movie didn't come off to me as funny. But my wife and I saw this in theaters, and we laughed louder than anyone else in attendance. When Mini-Me was strapped into the child safety seat after the Stick-Mole scene, my wife though she was gonna break a blood vessel, she was laughing so hard. Still one of our favorite stupid-humor movies.
The song was good because it had real musicians. The band is called Ming Tea and was founded by Michael Myers and Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles. The character of Austin Powers was first developed as part of this band and then the movies grew from that. Susanna can be seen playing guitar as the band performs.
You've gotta watch all the bond movies to get the Austin Powers jokes. Most everything taken from Bond and Flint movies --- Goldmember character based on Goldfinger played by Gerte B. Frobe (referenced in joe dirt) who says "I love gooooold" and "No Mr. Bond(Powers) I expect, them.. to....die". He had a heavy (voice over) accent and skin was "freckled" so it looked "peely"
The joke of the pieces of skin started when some of the prostheses began to fall off, as it really happens at the beginning. Then Mike Myers used it as a recurring joke.
I think a fair few scenes contained partial parts from old films/tv sitcoms, the goy with the big mole was the actor from an old 80s tv programme called The Wonder Years.
The skinny helicopter is a Bell AH-1 Cobra, it was the first dedicated attack helicopter. It was designed during the Vietnam war. They first used the Bell UH-1 Iroquois for attack as well as transport, but it became clear that the Iroquois was too large a target and should be left to transport roles. They took components from the Iroquois, designed a slimmer profile, gave it stub wings for weapon attachment and stuck a rotating Gatling gun on the chin to make it capable of providing full support and offense in battle. It was fast, maneuverable, deadly and modern variants are still in use today...
