I grew up in Edinburg, Texas. When I enter school I was spanked for not knowing English. I could not understand why it was happening to me. Now am fluent in both languages and understand how the system works. It made me stronger to deal with life. I have traveled and lived to several different states and had a solid foundation to fall on. I am 74 years old and can clearly reflect on the way my generation has contributed to the younger people. I am proud to be Chicano woman.

Thank you for creating this piece and telling one of the great S tories that makes Austin and the east side so unique! I loved seeing the primary sources of the organizing that went on. Now in 2017, the school board needs to all sit down and watch this. After all the work that was done to make sure Sanchez was a safe school for the learning of bilingual education and what it means to the community, it should be supported and cherished.

Great edification learning about others history instead of just the European history and just my own water down history (so called African American)that they teaches us in these schools. Now that I'm older I find out we are greater than what they tell us.

Unfortunately I never did take my Chicano History seriously, even though I considered myself a Chicano in the 1960's and 1970's. And still do consider myself to be a Chicano, but not that word has transpired into Mexican/American, Hispanic, Latino so the word Chicano has gotten lost. They didn't really teach us much Chicano history in high school, but the Chicano movement was very active.

Chicanos and only Chicanos fought for the rights that all Mexicans,Salvadorans,Hondurans,Puerto Rican etc. etc. benefit from yet we are never given the credit for it. We Chicanos stand up and fight unlike other Hispanics or Latinos.

Chicanos fought for civil rights not Mexicans or Latinos- Puerto Ricans, Salvadorans, Hondurans. Yet we never get the credit for fighting for civil rights. Chicanos fight injustices we just don’t stay quiet and take it. I am a proud Chicano💪🏼
