As an engineer this is some of the AGGRAVATING and EGREGIOUS journalism I have ever seen. Its not so much the things he gets right its the things he gest WRONG. The energy transition was always going to happen irrespective of renewables, batteries or anything else. Ever since the start of the industrial revolution there have been energy transitions driven by 2 inescapable facts. *1) Machines wear out* and no matter how good the maintenance is they eventually have to be replaced. Power stations are nothing more that big collections of machines and no matter the technology eventually have to be replaced. Even Solar panels which require almost zero maintenance wear out because the cells degrade. Wind turbines still need maintenance on their bearings, slew rings and gear boxes. Plus the leading edges of the blades of wind turbines can also wear out just from the abrasion of dust and other particles carried by the wind as has already happened in places like Denmark and Holland. *2) Populations change* and with it the demands on fundamental resources like electricity change. In 1982 Australia's population went past 15 million. In 2004 Australia's population went past 20 million and by 2019 it was over 25 million. Between 1982 and 1993 Australia commissioned 7 power stations with capacities over 1,000MW. After 1993 NOT 1 power station with more than 1,000MW has been commissioned. Its a similar story in many other places. Elon Musk has not done squat to actually get renewables into service or start an energy revolution. As usual he's simply taken advantage of the situation and a gullible and ignorant media have followed. Don't get me wrong Elon has done a couple of extremely good things. Snapping the car industry out of their stupor and getting electric vehicles into mass production has been worthy of praise. Breaking the stranglehold Boeing, Rockwell, Lockheed and others had on the space launch industry is also worthy of praise. In both cases however the people who have actually have done the work have received little recognition.

It’s interesting that the cost of build out was not contrasted to the cost to keep the coal plants running. I’m thinking that it would be close but the cost of renewables power would near zero as they don’t have a variable cost component once built. This will be dis inflationary as the lower cost of energy makes every thing cheaper.

The next big step for renewables will come when battery performance improves and prices drop. When installed battery drop below $10,000 dollars/Euros for 50 kWh of storage, nothing will be able to complete with solar in the home and small business energy markets. And, most humans live in the sunnier parts of the world. The combination of solar panels and affordable batteries will allow many businesses and homeowners to break the stranglehold that price gouging electric utility monopolies have had over electricity supplies for over a century
