After a 15-year political tug-of-war, Australia and East Timor have signed an agreement on their first maritime border. This means they will have to share revenues from a rich oil and gas field, which has been the subject of bitter wrangling. The Greater Sunrise project could generate revenues of up to $65.
For more on this, we speak to Steve Keen from Brussels, an Economics Professor at London's Kingston University.

The funny thing is that this guy from the University has no idea what he's talking about and is putting his personal opinion in the mix based off something unknown. Fact is Australia had an agreement with Indonesia about territory lines when East Timor was under Indonesia control. Their independence was helped by UN peacekeepers of which was majority from Australia. Once independence was achieved East Timor wanted and needed that resource. As they point out the distance note of the line of 420km to darwin, there is a lot of land before owned by Australia. The other thing to remember is that yeah they got independence but that doesn't mean they get to carve up new territorial lines. Australia was the one that brought it to the international court. Always do your research on topics and go to many different sources or you end up like this university guy and believe the first thing your told.

All your so called facts are completely false, Australia agreed a maritime boundaryr with Indonesia in 1972 when Timor Leste was still a Portuguese possession,,,but a huge Timor Gap was left in the boundary line, After Indonesia illegally invaded independent Timor in 1975 Australia signed a development agreement in 1987 with the Indonesian invaders for the Timor Gap, I guess if Japan had invaded Australia in 1942 you would hold that a free Australian Government should honour boundary agreements the Japanese invaders had made during occupation, In 2002 a new Gap resource agreement was made but Australia bugged Timor Government offices during the talks, Australia did NOT take the matter to the ICJ,,,instead it withdrew completely from the ICJ, In world history only Communist China and Australia have ever done this, As of 2018 the maritime boundary is still undecided,,,but doesnt it strike you as odd that Greater Sunshine is only 150 kms from Timor but 450 kms from Darwin, Why not a normal international Median Line boundary, Your syntax grammar and vocab are so poor I have trouble following your unfacts,,,but I hope the truth is a help, I am Australian too,,,,but I believe we should honour international treaties and adhere to international law,

@@michaelboylan5308 illegally invade a country.....you don't illegally invade a country you invade. Once occupied the country was then considered part of Indonesia. Borders were made in that time, might not make it seem right but all is legal and proper. It's a matter of opinion on moral grounds as to allow a new country to emerge (even if it previously exisisted) and make territorial claims. Fact is they don't have legal authority even on international grounds to exerte their independent territorial claims. It's the same when Germany lost WW2 they only paid off the amount they owed to countries for starting the war, as agreed in peace talks, less than 15 years ago. Does people of any country deserve to pay that price so many years after such an act, we are talking 50 years on after the war and they were still paying it off. Not fair at all but they weren't the victor, they paid the price for actions taken before them. Invasion may have been uncalled for and unjust but they are still acts and fact is the UN lead coalition was made up of majority of Australian soldiers. Australia's contribution to help resolve civil unrest in East Timor was the result of them gaining their independence. As said I'm saying that moral opinion should not interfere when dealing with facts as this guy has done. Someone that people would say be somewhat an expert speaking on a topic based on emotional and moral grounds and not fact is wrong.

@@michaelboylan5308 I also forgot to address the continued arguments about the distance of 150km and 450km to Darwin. There is a lot more land mass between Darwin and the shore, that is evident in this video. Territorial boundaries are made or formed generally based on land mass not by how far towns are or city's are from a place. As I had said best to research from multiple sources before coming to a conclusion as this suppose expert in the field has not done. You can see easily from the video that he is overtaken by emotion. From these sorts of people to do that is wrong, they can have their opinion on it but when talking expertly and professionally that needs to be put aside and they need and should deal with facts. To not do that is wrong and misinformation occurs.

@@seanflaherty1319 Clearly you are of a Stalinist Faction? I can't see how murdering 1000's of women , children and men is 'Legal'? Perhaps you have a 'Very' Personal Interest with this 'Invading' political power??

Why would Timor have to Honor a deal they had nothing to do with? If I purchase a business 100% , I am not obliged to honor previous business commitments. I would introduce my own trading model. The Indo-Aussie deal no longer exists. There is a new Player in the Mix, is there not??
