@@aguspuig6615 Spain fsr is pretty "irrelevant" everywhere, not only in games... People literally thinks Spanish culture and Mexican are the same You can see this on movies and games...
And other countries just think of hamburgers and bald eagles when America comes to mind. That's why people call us "burgers," and it's goddamn hilarious.
Fun fact: in the Doom Eternal Global map, it shows a Red dot that’s supposed to indicate Demonic activity, but Australia has legit no Red dots at all, meaning that Demons didn’t want to fuck with us
I was genuinely really touched by the warning to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers about their dead being shown, a lot of people, whether they're from Aussie or not, don't give a shit because "it takes too much time." The fact that you have done that, and you're also promoing Virtual Songlines shows that you're a true legend. On ya, mate.
I'm curious about the significence of this, is it due to beliefes that viewing imaged of deceased people while they were alive is seen as disrespectful or bad luck?
unironically, because despite what americans think our landscapes are very diverse (desert, outback, rainforest, snowy mountains, etc.) which would be perfect for a pokemon region. there'd be too many bug/poison types tho with all the spoiders
I've always thought a GTA type game set in Sydney or Melbourne would be great, somewhere in the 70s-90s. Basically do Chopper the movie the game. Also a Red Dead but with Australian bushrangers would be amazing.
I literally just came to youtube, typed in "australia video games" and came here commented this.. IMO Australia in the 70s would be wild. seeing all the old aussie souped up muscle cars too and panel vans..one can dream. I hope it's coming either GTA 7 or GTA 8
i know in as late as the '20s Australia was looking a lot like the wild west in terms of... well everything. It could be a very interesting game with cool things like the historical period and the post-WW1 technology.
Considering the parallels Australia had with the American wild west, I feel that a Red Dead game would be a great place to start. I mean there's all the bushranger and indigenous folklore to pull from and I think it would be familiar enough for people to connect with it easily, but the change in scenery and environment would be enough of a twist for it to be quite interesting.
So I'm Italian Aussie and I'd lose my shit (in a good way) if I saw an Australian representative in a game turn out to be a super woggy character. Like a first gen Italian who runs a pizzaria on Lygon st and throws Italian words in every now and again to sound exotic. Bellissimo!
I remember being really happy when I found out they had the rainbow serpent as a character in Persona and SMT. I'd love more media focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as there are so many groups all with different and rich cultures, and a lot of it never gets looked at outside of the Oceanic region. Even looking at my state, QLD, there are so many good things to pull from in general. A game set in the Daintree discovering new species of wildlife, a game set on a rural cattle farm where you have to deal with termites and drought, even a game where you have to help the GBR flourish could be interesting. I think if overseas studios tried to study us beyond a list of stereotypes it could be really neat.
"Not sure why a country as historically insignificant as us got into the game but hey they also put Brazil in." As a Brazilian, I LOLed. In terms of Brazilian representation in videogames, it's either Rio de Janeiro or Amazon Rainforest lol.
capoeira, carnaval, soccer... no one talks about that one time we fought some dolphins on ww1, but unlike the australians and their emu war, we actually won the battle ._.
would love to see an Eshay in Overwatch, he has a knife is 12 from Frankston and if you look at his TN's he enters a raged state where he takes 20% more damage but deals 50% more.
Cheers for mentioning “Indigenous Australians!”, I always like the idea of having a “Assassin Creed” type game based around “Pemulwuy” and the Aboriginal resistance!
As an Australian myself, I can confirm he perfectly describes our country. Jokes aside this video’s amazing. Keep up the good work! Also, Australian GTA 6 should be in Sydney so that we can actually drive on the Opera House.
When I was young, I was always disappointed that there weren’t more good games set in Czech or Slovak republics. Now with kingdom come, deus ex MD, EU4 and age of empires II I can say that I am really happy. I guess that I somewhat know how you feel. The virtual songlines doesn’t look bad at all.
honestly i feel like Australia is an under used place when it comes to post apocalyptic games, like Australia already has mutant monster animals. you can just make the bulidngs run down and boom, post apoc game
How Overwatch treats Australia: The only place that went to shit in a futuristic world How Team Fortress 2 treats Australia: The most advanced place in a world of morons Most Aussie Overwatch character: A complete lunatic that lobs around poorly made explosives with no sense of direction and reason Most Aussie Team Fortress 2 character: An invincible man with billions who can do pretty much anything he wants, yet still sensible enough to not fight a child Choose your game wisely
drugs are so easy to access here in australia, not that i do drugs i just know where i could get them. literally found out by random peoples conversations
Respect for saying that aboriginal people deserve more rep in games. I'm kind of ticked that they added Aussie to civ 6 and just kind of, left the aboriginals out to dry
Australia was extremely in demand as evident by how popular Civ 4 and Civ 5 mods were for Australian Civs. It makes sense that Firaxis would see the demand, fulfil the demand, and move on. There's no need to be ticked off for getting what has been asked for for years. It just means now you have a new thing to ask for.
In my opinion, IRL, Australian Aboriginals are probably one of the most disadvantageous ethnic groups in history to have ever formed any socio-political organizations to compete with other ethnicities. The Maori in New Zealand had successfully fought a trench war against European colonizers, but the Aboriginals at the current stage were just too victimized in history for game developers to design any winnable civ. Moreover, trying to group Aboriginals into one ethnic group while in fact they are a collection of various wildly different languages and traditions only classified as one ethnicity because they are "all native people when European settlers arrived" is problematic by itself.
gigantic two headed kangaroos fighting deathclaws in the ruins of the MCG or in the Sydney Opera House, or perhaps swarms of emus laying seige to an Australian Vault City
I have a friend from Perth who went to school here for many years (I'm Irish for context) and I have to say he's such a living steriotype it was hilarious 😅. He surfs, is blonde with a ponytail, is a frankly amazing rock singer and was in a band, his granddad owns a small island in indonesia, kept several budgies, I could go on. He moved back last year and I sorely miss that classic Australian-ness in my life. So yeah I'm with you on this!
No wonder we're poorly represented; didn't Australia only just legalise video games like 5 years ago? Seriously though, great vid, Davo. Love ya work more every time I see it. Also, I propose GTA VI: City of Casey. Actual Melbourne doesn't have the grit for it. Cranbourne/Frankston though ... man, just thinking about it makes me feel nostalgic for that ghetto like CJ rolling back into Grove Street.
You forgot to mention the Australian characters in the Battlefield 1 War Story, "The Runner" A realistic and respected representation of the Anzacs. Lest We Forget.
I'd go for somewhere up near the Gulf of Carpentaria, or Far North Qld. Failing that, cherry picking a biome from each state for that all rounded gaming experience.
Absolutely, Far Cry would actually be the perfect structure to set a game in Australia and I reckon they'd probably be able to do their best villain yet, we've got the most vile yet relatable people in the world over here, kind of guys who will butcher a family and then chuck ya 4 darts when you ask to bum one.
“Tryna sell my daughter a Camry instead of a commodore ya farken dog” absolutely killed me, paused to comment about it haha. Edit: you sound like a western Sydney lebo trying to put on a Aussie accent.
> A country known for the stereotype of tough people that are a bit rough around the edges. > also known for censoring/banning video games like a nanny state, because said people can't make their own decisions.
I think an analogy for its penal colony origin fits perfect for this. A country full of hardened criminals, whipped into submission by their overlords.
Chipps Dubbo is and always will be the ultimate Australian. He's the only named marine to survive every halo game unscathed, including the one where installation 04 gets destroyed and when half of Africa gets glassed. Saxton Hale is of course up there too, but Dubbo will always be my first pick.
Thanks for this! And yeah, indigenous Australians have the WORST representation in games. I like the idea of a game representing them properly. If there was going to be a GTA set in Australia, I would probably say a representation of Sydney and NSW. There are heaps of stories and ideas that I have that could work. But I reckon that a completely standalone game that isn't a GTA would work better. If you watch films and TV series of the elaborate crime syndicates that existed here (and still exist) in this country, and how they influence even politics and things like gambling and white collar crime; it would make a really good sophisticated narrative. Throw that in with all the activities you could do there would make it a fun game. I would say Melbourne and country Victoria could work as well, being from there and how biased I should be for the place, but it's a gritty place, don't know if players would recognize the Australianess of the city. It makes a fantastic backdrop for a crime story due to it's look and feel, especially if you have seen the films and television shows, but you can represent that in other places just as well in the US and Britian. Otherwise sequences in well represented Indigenous communites as a narrative contrast/wildcard to the Sydney game could be good too. I've personally lived out in a Warlpiri community in the NT; so I always want some sort of representation of them, the many Indigenous Australian cultures are all so fucking interesting.
@@joshuapostill4952 aboriginal ppl came to Australia from a land bridge from Asia and sub continent's of Asia they are immagrants just like us lol yes they were here before us but the land itself wasn't their's they came across it in their travels and settled just like captain Cook came across it on his! It's not his fault he had rifles and they had sticks lol
@@xmastoast8003 Pretty much every nations first people travelled there at some point in history. Aboriginal people have been in Australia for 50,000 - 300,000 years. They came to an empty land full of opportunity; Capt. Cook came to a land already owned by the native population around 233 years ago and preceded to claim it as British land for the crown. There's a big difference there. Aboriginal people had their life and history taken away. As an Aboriginal descendant I am offended by your blatant racism.
I know, right? Aboriginal folklore is so unique and diverse across the hundreds of different tribes. Some things remain consistent, but there are so many variations and retellings. All the stories and paintings, traditions and languages it's like a tapestry that most people just haven't seen
Doom Eternal shows a map of all in the demon-infested areas across the globe. Not a single gore nest in New Zealand or Australia. this is a fair bit into the future so I can only imagine they stayed away due to some kind of evolved eshay
Classic Aussie moment; I had finished TAFE in Ultimo, and was heading back to Wollongong. Waiting at Central at 9PM, a bunch of guys wearing expensive joggers, bumbags and baseball caps entered... One of them yelled "Mount Druitt REPRESENT! LET'S GET THIS SHIT STARTEEEEED" and promptly punched on with the first guy he found. Good times.
Outback Shott1e is a big fan of this video and I can say he's never been this hype before. Here's a secret. I've been simping for a Melbourne lass for about 10 years now so basically I love Straya. Can't wait to leave the States behind for the spider infested wombat land down under. Also Australia in gaming is basically just Kenshi and Civ 6 dlc. Davo with yet another legendary video.
There is this upcoming game set in the Aussie outback called "Broken Roads" it's in the style of the original fallout or wasteland and has a strong Indigenous Australian culture looks sick as fuck
@@Toothily Just go to western Sydney. It effectively is its own version of 2fort, complete with piss throwing bogans, scrawny guys trying to pick fights, psychopaths trying to set you on fire with you and fat men offering you sandwiches (just don't look what is inside the sandwich).
"what happens to australia when everything goes to shit?" as a brazilian i ask the same about my country especially because politically speaking brazil is pretty well lots of fauna, a big ass jungle, peaceful country with a small number of "rival" countries and its the place with the most drinkable walter that isnt frozen in the planet i would imagine that on mad max, fallout and shin megami tensei it would be one of the first countires to fall because of the water but they never say much about what happens in south america in general
@@pedroxyo not saying that there arent problems especially inside the country but its a peacefull country at large with very few cobflicts in the last few years and even fewer conflicts with other nations not only that but brazil has also helped to find peaceful solutions for conflicts outside of south america What i was trying to say is not that it is 100% peacefull but that no country would just bomb us like it usually goes for post apocalyptic stories out there
I will say that Junkrat and Roadhog actually have some interesting backstory to them. Junkrat is essentially a product of Roadhog's mistakes during the omnic crisis. Hog's generation caused the nuclear fallout in OW's Australia, which he actually feels pretty guilty for.
I really enjoyed the recognition of the indigenous peoples that you did it’s almost funny how people think that the English where the first here. And how everyone came from Australia not Africa (just sayyyiinng 120,000 try n beat that)
Thank you for mentioning Aboriginal culture! It's one of the most underappreciated cultures in the world. Beautiful art, unique traditions and folklore. As long as it's done with respect, a game set in Aboriginal Dreamtime has such potential to be a unique experience. It could be used as an educational tool too, think like what Assassins Creed did in recent entries, with collectibles that teach you about history? It could serve as a portal for learning. Like, I've honestly had enough time in the spotlight of Australia international, I think the Original Custodians deserve a fair shake and a half now at the very least
I think that's what Virtual Songlines aims to be, more of an interactive and educational tool rather than a typical game, but it's great that they're showing the differences between the many different cultures among our First Nations people rather than treating them as one big homogeneous culture. And you're right, they have basically no representation at all in video games and are in basically no media at all outside of Australia which is sad considering how amazing it is that so many of these ancient traditions are still alive to this day.
@Sanctus Paulus the exact opposite argument can be made. "White people are only about 85% of the Australian population but are present in almost every piece of media. Why should we include them?" Anyway name the last time you played a game featuring any Aboriginal in a prominent roll. Go on. I'll wait. But honestly if you don't realise how much of a tosspot argument that is then idk what else to say
@Sanctus Paulus putting white people in 100% of media is overrepresentation dude. Oh and get this right - GAMES ARENT REAL LIFE. They aren't bound to reality and can represent anything any way they want. If it's set in Aboriginal Dreamtime you aren't gonna want almost everyone to be white, same thing if it's set in a modern day Aboriginal community. To act like they don't exist because they make up a minority is honestly kinda racist. And btw, a good portion of people don't really care what ethnicity their game character is. No normal white person will go "I don't like this game because I have to play as an African/Asian/Latino person" so to say no one wants to play as an Aboriginal is just plain wrong. Besides, I literally just expressed interest in playing as an Aboriginal in a game
australian stalker would be fucking terrifying, the horrific mutated beasts based off australian animals would be horrific. I could only imagine venturing into a gigantic funnel web spider's lair propped up in a desecrated shopping centre, or being chased by a mangled half kanga half emu hybrid half, hopping half running towards you extremely quickly, and holy shit, there could finally be a proper drop bear enemy in a video game. (also crackhead eshays would be a great human enemy)
Canadian here; honestly I feel the representation is even worse since... Well, admittedly most "actual Canadians" are just very similar to Americans. First Nations representation is a hot-button issue here though, just the same as it is in Australia. Anyway, I think the best, not-strictly-stereotypical depiction of a Canadian I've ever seen in a video game was, specifically, that one cutscene in GTA V where Trevor starts a Rampage against _the US army,_ just because two soldiers made fun of his accent. "It's a faint fucking accent! You can hardly tell!"
That or Wolverine but hey it’s pretty cool being nice well Americans have that stereotype too or being fat Canada is moose syrup hockey poutine and snow.
Fallout: Port Pirie GTA: Melbourne, we can have Tim Smith as the Trevor-type character, it has a Casino, A river, and a tonne of gang crime according to the Herald Sun.
I've always wanted to see a Farcry game set in the Australian outback similar to 5's story or something completely different like Wolf Creek, where you play a sole ranger investigating missing people out there, an open world survival horror but with guns. So tired of the "Repressed country, kill evil dictator, liberty outposts" repetitive gameplay loop in Farcry. I say go back to the roots of Farcry 2 with it's gun jamming and survival mechanics, the deserts of Australia would be perfect for this, how about hunger and thirst in the game too like fallout's hardcore mode. A bit if red dead redemption 2 style hunting and gathering for food. How about a cowboy era game set in Australia instead. The outback is the perfect place for a open world survival game!!!
@@NewOrderOfAlexandria It could be set in 2021, and the main dictator is Dan in a (please let it be...) alternate timeline where he imprisons all of victoria (The more I say it the more it's sounding like it'd be a documentary video game though).
