Australia's Abandoned Railways: the Casino to Murwillumbah Line in 2022

Train services on the railway line between Casino and Murwillumbah, in far northern New South Wales (Australia), ceased in May 2004. Nearly 20 years later, we take a journey along the line and see what is left of it, the state of the surviving stations and the work underway to convert parts of the line to a 'rail trail' (bicycle/pedestrian path). Photographed in July 2022, with additional material from October 2019, May 2016 and January 1990 (during the final weeks of operation of the former Pacific Coast Motorail Express).

As someone who used to work at Broadmeadow railway station in the 80's this was quite sad to watch. The line back then was incredibly popular and we booked many passengers to Murwillumbah. It is short term thinking as really the best answer would have been to upgrade and expand the line to connect further up and go to Brisbane.

So near and yet so far! Even when I was growing up on the far north coast during the 1960s the gap between Murwillumbah and the Gold Coast seemed so small but also so insurmountable. I'm not sure if we will ever see a line extending from Queensland down into the far north coast region of NSW. Thank you for watching.

Actually, that line used to run from Brisbane via the Gold Coast, terminating at Tweed Heads where everybody used to change trains and head south via Murwillumbah, Casino & on to Sydney. And of course, Vice Versa when coming from Sydney. EDIT!! I made a mistake! 👀👀👀👀 The trains did in-fact terminate at Murwillumbah, not at the border as I stated above. 🤦‍♂🤦‍♂

How very sad that an anti-rail NSW government treated this railway line with such contempt. This line should have been upgraded given its importance to the lifeline of the local economy.

Not only do they need to reinstate this line, they must extend it to the Gold coast airport and then link back up with the Brisbane line. Stations restored at Murwillunbah and Byron Bay, a station constructed at Ballina and Lismore restored. This will allow international tourists to jump straight on a train to Byron Bay and Ballina. On the northen extension you have a station at Tweed Heads also, then the GC airport, then have the line join back up to the Brisbane line at Robina. Then run services from Brisbane to Casino, even have an XPT service to Sydney take that route. Regular services run from GC airport to Casino (maybe Ballina if traffic past there can't justify it), and Have 1 return service per day from Brisbane, all stops to Casino. It is one peice of infrastructure that will be heavily used if an option, and will greatly benefit all towns it stops at in the long run. It's a no brainer to have a rail connection to those areas from an international airport. There is even a case to be made for taking the line after Byron bay down through Lennox Head, Ballina, Evans Head, Yamba, Townsend(back area of Maclean) and then rejoin the main line at Grafton. It's just a matter of political will with such a large undertaking. Did I mention it can carry heavy freight as well..
@krdcountrytv
@krdcountrytv Год назад
Hi David, thank you for your comment and I am sure many people agree with your suggestion. Unfortunately, I don't think reopening of the existing line will ever occur and the only way that a rail link between the Gold Coast and the upper north coast of NSW will ever eventuate is if a new line is built on a new and faster alignment to serve the towns you mention. That would be a major logistics and economic challenge which governments on both sides of the border (but particularly NSW) may struggle to meet! But we can live in hope and, in the interim, enjoy the 3 km of track that remains in use at Byron Bay. Thank you for watching.

@@darrylmackie9184 Thanks for your input and I respect your position, but what is the deal with the attacking posture? If you have a point to make, make it without resorting to ANGRY CAPITALISATION and name calling. I said it ran from Casino to Murwillumbah, and it did, and the other person corrected themselves if you care to look. I love to learn new things, and I would value your input as a resident. I am talking big picture stuff here, so I apologise if I didn't take your concerns into consideration. Why I didn't is I did not know of them when writing. I was speaking purely from an economic standpoint due to the proximity of an international airport at the Gold Coast, and the lack of easy public transport from said airport to those tourist areas from Byron to Ballina and even down to Yamba. I also said that reconnecting Lismore to the main line would help that area grow. Once again, an economic argument.
@user-mb3dx3nn5c
@user-mb3dx3nn5c 23 дня назад
Not going to happen. Queensland isn't going to pay for a line that runs in NSW, and NSW won't pay for a line that would benefit Qld more than NSW. The only way the northern rivers will ever get a railway line again is if a high speed line (top speed around 300km/h) is built between Sydney and Brisbane via the Gold Coast, and that is far off in the future, if ever. Also, there are direct daily one hour jet flights between Ballina and Sydney, which beats sitting on a train all day or overnight. Ballina airport is served by several bus operators running to places such as Byron Bay, so there is no need for trains. Taxis and hire cars are available there too. Similar services exist at the Gold Coast airport as well. Also, the drive from the Gold Coast or Brisbane to Byron Bay and Ballina has become faster, safer and easier since the Pacific Highway was upgraded to a four lane motorway or dual carriageway. Once again, no need for trains anymore.

@krdcountrytv
@krdcountrytv Год назад
At the time the XPT replaced the Brisbane and Murwillumbah trains the XPT service was seen as being very competitive with buses. Interesting to note, as you say, 30+ years on it is airlines that are now competing with XPTs! Thank you for watching.
@johnsergei
@johnsergei Месяц назад
It looks like the government might support the airlines even more than? Even with the current prices why was domestic air travel so expensive in the 70s & 80s?. The planed are the same size, did buying & running an airliner get dramatically cheaper from the early 90s? It's government support otherwise the government would have to rebuild the railways to a decent standard. Buying & running an airliner is actually vastly more expensive than in was 50 years ago, even adjusted for inflation.
@krdcountrytv
@krdcountrytv 29 дней назад
@johnsergei Domestic air travel was more expensive in the 70s/80s because the “two airline policy” applied, under which the market was only open to two carriers for interstate services. That policy was abolished in 1992, leading to new entrants, more flexible scheduling and increased competition, all of which led to lower fares. Running an airline is and always has been an expensive business but our airlines are (mostly) not supported by the government.
@johnsergei
@johnsergei 27 дней назад
@@krdcountrytv So in 1970s 70s, they were utterly ripping people off (& losing most of the business, to rail). Today (or ever) no private company is going to run an airliner @ a loss. You need to learn how the monetary system works. Compared to other costs, running these narrow body mid or small capacity airliners seems to have got much cheaper.

As a person who was born & raised in Western Sydney & have loved watching the North Coast trains ( including the Brisbane Limited ) go North to Newcastle etc & later return before moving to Perth in W.A. in the 80's - I love the fact that you've covered this very scenic line as I recall the Murwillumbah XPT service still in service with what only seems to be a few years ago now but thankfully the line still passes through Taree where my parents live so when we head to their place on holidays - it's always great to visit the Mid North Coast , if only the line could be replaced in full size as a "Heritage Rail" thing or a miniature rail thing for visitors to enjoy again but that'll be up to someone who has some money that could make it happen. Absolute disgrace that this line was closed, it should have been upgraded to link with the Gold Coast Line, this in return would have provided many jobs and a boost for local businesses, the only train that should be stopped is the Politician’s GRAVY TRAIN, the Motorail to & from Murwillumbah was a very popular train in it’s day & was always well patronised unlike the Political lies that it was being withdrawn because it only ran @ 40% capacity, I remember taking my mother to join the train at Wauchope one night to travel to Sydney & the train was that long it had to make three stops @ the platform.

For any town, large or small, which had a rail service, for that service to be removed is an *ABJECT DERELICTION OF DUTY* by a State Government and should be classed as an *ACT OF HIGH TREASON* by that government against the populations of those towns.

Doesn’t the line need to be closed by the act of parliament first ?
@neilforbes416
@neilforbes416 Год назад
@@joshuatownsend3593 It does, but that's not the point. The point is the *denial* of a service to the communities along the line that was served by these trains.

leave the rails alone not to be lifted ,rent stations out to rail fans ,you could also run jiggers for sight seeers ,kick the bloody greens out ,,like germany..and things will change

A substantial part of the line has been 'officially' closed, so rail removal is inevitable. Thank you for watching.

High maintenance costs and only one return train a day killed this line.

The Ai talking is awful, just use your own voice... Gotta be better than the robot!!

Thank you for the feedback. The AI voices are an interesting development and I think they are improving all the time. In some ways they are much easier to use than recording your own voice but I understand they are not to everyone's taste. Thanks for watching.
