An Australian aboriginal group has just completed a tour of European museums in a bid to retrieve items taken from their ancestors in the 18th century.
What if someone walks into your fridge and steals your carton of beer without asking? How would you feel? Trespassing into someone's backyard without asking and killing people is looking for trouble.. This guy here is taking back the traditional weapons that were stolen, and he has every right for it to return to it's ancestral lands where it came from. As an individual, no one has no right to take away the rights of another person who is fighting for his own right. Everybody have their own rights, this is coming from a full blooded aboriginal of Central Australia....
Well said, I'am still waiting for someone to describe the shape of the wheel the first nation people invented in the last 60,000 years or is it 80,000 years this week? I will have to contact BRUCE PASCOE I suppose!
British never apologized what they did to the colonies and probably would never do so. They still hold our Kohinoor as an icon of the Empire and the atrocities they conducted on our people. The Empire, for them was the golden period, and there was nothing to be ashamed off in this period. This is the sad truth!
Your ignorance amazes me. Check out Harappan and Mohenjodaro sites. They had better architecture than even the medieval or 19th century Britain. We did not live in mud huts. Have you even seen Taj Mahal or the palaces in India? We did have education and architecture prior to British. And if you care to read even a little about the colonial period, you would know the real truth, which is never taught in British schools. You British fantasize and feel proud of the colonial era. However, try visiting any colonies or even talk to a person from that place. You will know how the British exploited and plunged their economies. Millions died in famine in India while the Indian produced food was being transported for the World War. The farmers were oppressed to such high levels, that they basically earned at subsistence levels or below. The money collected from taxes from the Indians was used by the British to buy Indian raw materials and use them in their factories to produce manufactured items. That money was supposed to be used for the benefit of the people. And if that was not enough, they destroyed our small scale industries by selling their cheap products. I would definitely suggest you to take a few classes in History and know things before writing here like an absent minded person.
Well, if you are an Indian, then you must know of the atrocities done by the British. And since this video is about the British refusing the hand over artifacts, hence my comment on the British colonial rule becomes pertinent. It's true that looking at past will bring nothing, but at the same time, our past is our History. And it is this History that has impoverished us and brought it to such a point where more than half the population doesn't even have two meals a day. As far as understanding other cultures is concerned, I have read enough about that. However, I would definitely suggest you to read more about British colonial rule in African and Australiant sub-continent. The British killed the natives of America and Australia. These kind of plunging, looting and murders can't be ignored just because it was in the past. Not once has British apologized to it's colonies. Rather, the Queen still wears Kohinoor on her crown mocking the colonies. Lastly, whether what the Britishers are now, but the British colonialists were bad people, period.
@@oneman80840 Are you under the impression that native Americans only lived in what is now called “the United States of America”. . .because that’s the only way that I can understand your comment.
@@oneman80840 The AMERICAN CONTINENT is ~10% indigenous. . .and that’s “pure indigenous”. Probably closer to a quarter or maybe a third are of partial, significant indigenous heritage. . .from mixed race groups like “mestizos” (which would basically be considered “indigenous” in Australia).
So many arrogant people here, respect our (indigenous Australians) wishes and just return these objects back to where they belong. There are places in our own country where people can pay to see rather than in a land that took so much away from us!
So does Australia get to keep the guns and all weapons used against us at this time? So why do they keep our stuff from this time in history? If I find a rock in a national park that is not my rock it must stay in the national park, so if you found item on our land they should have stayed here.
All aboriginal so called artifacts should be returned to the original owners or next of kin or anyone who claims to be . That would free up a lot of floor space in museums for more interesting things .
Im a bit split with this, i mean sure they should get them back I guess. but what for? I mean if its in a museum everyone gets to see it and reflect on Australia's troubled history. What use is the shield other than to sell or hang as in the home where it may deteriorate anyway. the logic is kind of lost on me in that regard.
If items are in state or public museums - they are OK. I`m Mongolian, I`m OK with Mongol artifacts are in European museums or even in Middle East. If they are in Mongolia, there is always a big possibility of selling them by our primitive government officials or even can`t store them properly - resulting it`s destruction. "Reclaim" is idiocy - guy can make a new spear and shield with fresh colors.
HotZetiGer the different here is that 90 percent of the natives of Australia were killed , dude if you actually know the history of this country you would understand their pain. Their history is literal all they have left , Australia destroyed a lot of it to 'turn them white' literal it was plan to breed the black out of them , if you go into the outback today we'll still see the old government houses that were created to turn native children away from their roots , they are call the stolen generation
Children were predominantly removed from their families because of abuse, both physically and sexually. It is still happening today. These days, the removed children are housed if possible with other family members to reduce the affects. The authorities removed abused children from any family of any cultural group. You cannot label them as stolen. While mistakes have been made on all sides, the intent was mostly towards welfare. The redundant so called white Australia policy was born out of the need to deal with the plague of the cultural shock generated when the hunter gatherer social structure was confronted by that of the European one. Its called the sit down money disease. Or in historical terms, sugar, tea and flour payments. These artifacts were not "stolen". Many were exchanged and traded. Some found. You cannot categorize generally. While there is undoubtedly pain and hurt felt on both sides, there is also a lot of good will and reconciliation too.
@@xoncention3265 that's mainly why kids are taken. But there was a period when they just took as many children as they could find, as an attempt to assimilate them into the colony. They also had eugenics plans to breed them out. The colonists wanted to play god.
Nobody has the right to come into your home, kill your people, take your children, strip away your lands, colonize your country, steal your artifacts and then make excuses claiming that it's pain on both sides. If your trying to justify these crimes to explain why someone else's artifacts are better off with a people who stole it from the aboriginal people then I say same on you. What happened to black people in Australia and around the world can not be justified nor is our pain equal to that of another race because there is another race of people that have suffered mass genocide by the hands of white Europeans. Give us back what is rightfully ours!
But why was there a need to steal it from people who’ve already lost so much of their history ? Why is there always an interference from the White man towards natives ?
Love Muffin history is the documentation of the past. Without European scientists documenting the cultures of native peoples we would know barely anything about them in the current year. People with more power will always take advantage of people with less power, but in the modern age for the first time in human history the people in power have decided to have pity on those with less. Aboriginal people in western countries have been receiving aid in multiple forms to help them rebuild their identity. Aboriginal people in non western countries aren’t so lucky. Just look at how west Papua and the orang asli or the Baka, twa, Khoisan and other indigenous Africans are treated by the dominant culture. The western world is trying to reconcile with the indigenous peoples, but that can’t happen unless there is forgiveness from them. You can’t just keep shaming white people for things that happened in the past when they are currently working to fix those mistakes.
These items are sacred objects that have spiritual and cultural significance to its people and descendants. Why not make replicas for the museum and return the artifacts to its original people?
Australian Survival Instructors They are sacred now because most indigenous Australian culture and history was stolen or destroyed on purpose. Of course they want it back. It's theirs. Wtf. The only reason anyone would think their opinion about the people's ancestral belongings is more important/valid than the descendants themselves is if you think you are in some way superior. It doesnt matter what you think you know. Do some research and do a workshop on internalised racism.
How can it be proven , that the artifacts were stolen ? IMPOSSIBLE. Most would have been traded , given or bought by individuals and past on to collectors and museums . I doubt that any would have been taken by force . Does this mean that one day , all aboriginal art bought in good faith will be regarded as stollen and demanded to be returned . It is only the urban mostly white so call aborigines that make such demands . The true full bloods and half cast in the bush are quite happy with their lives. What is an artifact? At Aers Rock cultural centre , black woman burnishing patterns on lathe turned wooden bangles from cellophane wrapping with hot coat hangers and sold to tourists . Is that aboriginal art?
Bought in good faith? They lost their language culture land and robbed of humanity! nothing was bought even if money was exchanged because what was taken was far less then what was gained by Indigineous people meeting Europeans!
Ther is no way any aborigies half , quarter , or eighth cast or anyone who claims to be part of, would give back all white mans things ,and go back to an absolute stoneage existence without electricity, cars, flying doctor ,aluminium boats and outboard motors etc, etc, etc.
Because it is Sacred and connects our people, our ancestors. We have had many things stolen from us our land, languages, brothers and sister and more. So be respectful to the oldest living culture in the world
Hes having a laugh u think the white man is going to give u your weopons back by your looks i.e skin tone theve asimilted you and in time exteminate you
Obviously the evolution of mankind has its downfalls, it's evolutionary instincts is the ugly part of humanity, along with the malfunction of individual consciousness in certain people, and seems to be contagious psychologically
@@nononsensedragon9438 yes indeed what is the meaning of life. Have we lost our purpose. We were once apart of nature, now we separate ourselves from it.
Australia would have been so much *worse* off had the British not colonised!!!! Let's face it. Glad I don't live in a tree eating nuts and berries all day
Surely that's like a criminal asking for his knife back after the police seize it after he stabs someone. If they were more peaceful, they'd have been allowed to keep them.
