Despite being one of the world's top natural gas exporters, Australia is on the brink of a gas shortage crisis as market operators warn it could threaten the lives of everyday Aussies.
So, how will we fix it?
Energy Market Analyst Bruce Robertson explains.

@shaun5552

For Queensland LNG exports the final decision was made in 2010 under a Labor federal government. For WA the initial export approval was given by a Liberal federal government with subsequent increases under both parties. For the idea of increasing the household use of gas, shifting away from electricity for water heating, that was a deal done by Labor in 2006 in return for Greens preferences at the 2007 federal election. So politically they're all to blame. More broadly, energy planning is mostly about oil and gas resources or the limitations thereof, that's the big problem and has been well understood as being so for half a century. Now go and look at Australian energy policy discussion over the past few decades and it's been on pretty much everything other than that subject. Privatisation, competition, climate change, nuclear, rivers even but the primary problem, oil and gas resources, has barely had a mention. That's the real failure.

Where are the long-term gas supplies coming from? Australia's east coast gas market (including Qld, NSW, ACT, Vic, Tas & SA) has 2P developed gas reserves-to-production (R/P) of only 9.4 years plus 2P undeveloped gas R/P of 8.6 years. 18 years remaining at best of gas supplies at year-2023 production rate. See the AEMO's 𝘎𝘢𝘴 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘖𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 - 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 2024: 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘈𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢’𝘴 𝘌𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘊𝘰𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘎𝘢𝘴 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘵 document shows in Figure 26 (on page 47). If one cannot find any economically extractable gas, then one cannot produce it. And even if some were found, how does that sit amongst the overall scheme of things as far as global gas reserves and production rates exist? As a gas producer, Australia (3.7% global share in 2023) is a minnow compared with USA (25.5% share) & Russia (14.4%). Global fossil methane gas supplies are only going to get scarcer and more expensive.

Well energy companies cannot invest in the future because they are prevented from new gas exploration. Therefore they are obliged to earn the most profit while they can off existing gas fields. If the Government wish to control energy prices then they can either invest themselves and or allow new gas exploration.

More reason than ever to give gas companies the finger and go fully electric. That will solve the “shortage”. The sooner the Govt gives out some decent subsidies to do so, the quicker it will happen.
@MellanieBroad
@MellanieBroad 10 дней назад
You do know half our power stations are run on gas to produce the electricity you do get that right 😂😂😂😂😂
@edvoon
@edvoon 10 дней назад
@@MellanieBroad Nope, gas will only be needed for "peaking". Renewables and batteries can and will supply almost 100% of our needs once they are built out. And anyway, even if more gas is used at power plants, it is still used way more efficiently than everyone burning their own gas. And with everyone not needing gas anymore, then there's no excuse for shortages since there will be no competition for the gas for residential use, the power plants can have as much gas as they need.

Bruce Robertson bemoans the lack of availability of gas and then says we shouldn't use it; odd disingenuous fellow. The gas is in Queensland and is needed in NSW and Victoria 2000 + km away. Victoria and NSW refuse to allow the development of new fields and no private enterprise is going to build new pipelines for intermittent firming requirements and without firm gas sales to cover the investments. The federal or state governments can fund as a build own operate enterprise if they want, but it would be cheaper to develop within their own states or do what they really want; to go all-electric. What's stopping them.
@whophd
@whophd 10 дней назад
Get off gas. Our power bills didn't go up after we switched to induction cooking, but they did go down when we switched hot water. (Easier to clean and faster to boil water too). Electricity power bills are negative with wholesale power (Amber) and solar and batteries. They literally put dollars in my bank account every 2 months. Negative power bills.
