Exploring far reaching fjords & remote anchorages of the Inside Passage charting a course North to Alaska (slowly), we're a Canadian Aussie duo documenting the ups & downs of off-grid life on a small 'no-frills' sailboat, Uintah. No refrigeration, no auto-pilot, hauling our anchor up by hand & adventuring off the beaten path with the purpose of living a more intentional, sustainable, self-sufficient life.
WHO WE ARE
Hi! We're Allison & James 👋we left the conventional life behind to live an adventure-based alternative lifestyle here in the Pacific Northwest! Currently, we split our time between land and sea - living part time in our tiny home in the woods and the rest of the year living on our floating tiny home, exploring the epic coastline of the PNW! I was in the Royal Australian Navy and my last trip at sea was returning to Sydney from NZ across the Tasman. This is when I encountered the heaviest seas I experienced in my 10 years in the Navy, our 330 foot Destroyer was thrown mercilessly and we were rolling over 45 degrees. Crossing the Tasman is a fantastic thing to have to done in a 37 foot sail boat, I hope to do it myself some day, Bravo Zulu to you all.

@@AllisonandJamesSailing It was the worst storm since the queen’s birthday storm. It occurred on 6/11-12 and produced huge snowfall in the South Island and knocked all power out in the north Island. My wife was on our boat at Bayswater in Auckland and I was delivering a boat for a friend to Brisbane. I actually used a weather service for the first time and they were WRONG - when we figured it out on our own it was to late to turn back. Long story, diverted immediately to Norfolk Island ( with no chart) went around island with soundings to have a tract to follow in the night and waited. Used the island as a shield and went around it as the storm passed- but were under storm staysail for the rest of the voyage. Had I not done that we would not have survived. My boat is a custom steel Ted Brewer cutter - Ironmistress- I was on a Beneteau 39 for that trip. June was late to leave but that’s the way it goes. Again excellent video and narration.

What an incredible experience. I had to watch it three times to take it all in. Memories of bonding & learning to trust in your boat, your rigging, your sails and the realization that you are actually at the mercy of the magic of the ocean, it was so wonderfully captured on video. I too have been in the galley for a couple of days with the same thoughts as Allison but fortunately came through at the end with a sense of accomplishment and belonging to that special group of "dock rats" who feel more comfortable on water than on land or air.Very well done , all of you. Thank you for allowing us in. Here's to many more adventures. ❤

Back in 2018 on a Halleberg Rassey 40, myself, the skipper and a friend of his, we did the cross Tasman passage but the other way. Nelson to Newcastle. The trip took 11 days and we covered 1400nm. From memory we encountered some storm conditions with winds around 30-40 kts and hove to a couple of times to allow us all to get some rest. My own boat, a 30 ft sloop built back in 1974 also did this passage, sailing from Hobart to Opua and return. The trip over took 18 days including encountering a 60 kt storm and 14 days on the return passage. When you are out there on the ocean, you certainly realise just how small you are and how alone. It’s both awe inspiring and maybe at times can be somewhat scary/challenging. But it is nice to know you have succeeded in making such a passage.

The tribute paid to the boat was welcome. Few adventurers or other supposed sailors take the time to thank their boat.. Do objects have a soul?.. Boats, no doubt! Very nice video that I had a lot of fun watching! Thanks and congratulations!
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing Год назад
The boat was definitely the main character of the film, love that this resonated with you Jean! To others it might seem like silly superstition but us sea farers can probably all relate to this notion! The phenomenon whereby a boat -after long and intimate usage, having been exposed to our love, anger, care, thought, frustration, satisfaction, blood, sweat, and tears - becomes imbued with something. Something meaningful. A soul? Some spirit of its own? Odd but undeniable. Whatever it is it, I for one am happy the spirits of ships live on in the lore, legends and salty stories of seasoned sailors! Thank you for watching, so glad you enjoyed it. Hope to bring you more like it, cheers! -A

@@AllisonandJamesSailing Your step father has done an incredible job refitting his Shannon 37. What a gorgeous boat! You all were troopers to blast across a rollicking Tasman Sea while it was in such a grand mood. The footage that you took to share with all of us was just stunning! Ask my wife and she'll tell you that I am always watching sailing videos on RU-vid. Compared to what is out there to see, this documentary of yours was a cut above all the rest. A "Well done!" from a man who seldom hands out unqualified praise. I was the proud owner of Solveig for ten years here in Hawai'i, 2007 -2016. Solveig is a 36-ft. wooden Aussie cutter built by the Halvorsens in Sydney for their own bids in the Sydney-Hobart Race. She won the Trans-Tasman in 1951, won the Hobart with line honors in 1953, and was overall winner of the Hobart in 1954. She was sailed up for entry into the TransPac in the mid-'50s and stayed here for sixty years passing from one owner to the next. I bought her for a song when she was long in the tooth and I did a major refit over the next decade. What a wonderful old racer she was! I only wish I had sailed her more and worked on her less. A retiring shipping entrepreneur bought her, shipped her back to Sydney and, undoing a number of my modifications, performed an expert job returning her to her original design brief. Unfortunately, one gets little credit for all of the blood, sweat and money that one puts into these creatures of the sea. At 72, Solveig was the oldest racer entered in the last Hobart, I believe. I now have a forty-year old blue water pocket cruiser for my next project. You might be interested to know that Talaria was built in your neck of the woods - Seattle. I've spent the last year chasing away the termites and digging out the rot and look forward to bringing her back to Bristol condition. Anyway, a long comment from someone who seldom comments but who is now subscribed to your channel and is looking forward to more of your videos.

Oh cool! You're the second person in the comments that had a relation to Yaringa! Landfall spent three years there. B&D flew to Australia back in October to go rescue her and we joined them in December to help out. We spent a month with them living on the boat in the yard, it was interesting for sure! haha I grew fond of the resident koala and all the pretty parrots. We were very thankful Bass Strait decided to take it easy on us, especially after reading and hearing about how bad it can get! I guess James is ready to get served one because he's keen to head back for the Sydney to Hobart. So glad you enjoyed the film, thank you for writing! Cheers!
