Australians were actually conscripted into the army during the Vietnam War. So it really hurts that some people don't want to be in this war, but were stuck into this. Eventually dying.
Not all were... The conscripted blokes were nicknamed "Natios". It was done through the national service scheme. When they turned 18 they were automatically up for national service, but that didn't necessarily mean you were put into the defence forces automatically either. Anyway, once you were signed up to national service, your name was automatically put into a ballot draw and if your birthday came up, that meant you were it. If you were a conscientious objector, then you could wriggle out of it... The vast majority who were drafted did go, and they did 12 months training in the army/navy/air force and then 12 months in Vietnam. Although not every Natio was sent to Vietnam either. Some natios were posted here in Australia as well and hardly ever fired a round apart from live fire exercises every so often.
01:02 Just a little inaccurate there. The co-ordinates and bearing don't go directly to the gun crew. They first go to the battery Command Post where additional calculations are made (bearing, angle of sight, ammo charge number) and this is transmitted to the gun crew who set the gun sights accordingly.
This is a movie, and this is the one scene that doesn't show the fact that the guy reading the co-ordinates for the firemission to the gun crew is the guy in the battery Command Post. Hence why the guy calling for the strike is yelling, and the voice the gun crew is hearing is much calmer. Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan
Right on..I was in the a Mortar platoon NZ Army 80's early 90's...each platoon had a its own guy back then on a plotter board that received the fire mission who got given a fire mission and a grid reference...It was his job to work out the elevation, bearing and charge. The forward spotter or MFC could not give the bearing from where he is as they dont always know the location of the artillery piece so difficult for them to give the bearing etc..only the grid reference. Also missing in that order was type of fire mission? IE first round should be spotting round in case an adjustment is needed once on target another order should come from the front line as either an adjustment or if on target would be a 5-or 10 rounds fire for effect for example
@@Titannz213 so in this the FO is attached to HQ coy and the guys in contact are most likely untrained observers hence the quick calling in but again they where being heavily engaged in an ambush close quarters
The title is a horses arse. It was NOT an ambush. It was an ENCOUNTER BATTLE. There is a huge difference. The government count not admit that the enemy would deliberately attack the Australians so came up with the ambush story. The film clearly explained the encounter that developed into the battle.
Yeah a Shame your Friends can't u help to won in Vietnam skipys do they Best can do but Even so You Lost in Vietnam and same history 40 traes later in Iraq
I always feel Bad for Australians and Zealanders, they are so awesome soldiers and are always dragged to the most useless and meaningless conflicts, like World War I and Vietnam, yet they always fight to the bone on them
Neither WWI nor Vietnam were useless or meaningless. The former prevented evil empires from dominating Europe and the latter was a war against the irredeemable evil that is communism
@@ZeroResurrected Evil Empires such as the British and the French? lmao And no, the Vietnamese fough for their independence, dont forget that just before the Americans they had fought against the French, and after the Americans they fought the Cambodian, Communist criminal regime supported by, oh surprise, USA and China, then China itself decided to invade Vietnam, but just like the Americans, they lost.
@@Fulcrox That communist regime opposed America in the Cambodian Civil War and was supported by NV and the VC in the first place. And while the British and French did slimy things, no doubt, they at least didn’t massacre civilians in Belgium or commit genocide against the Armenians like the Central Powers did
@2:28 STG44... Pretty awesome that they had the full arsenal available that they had in real-life. This is pretty awesome! Never noticed that whilst watching the full movie.
Look at all those deaths in the war and Vietnam still fall to the communist, it would have been better for West not to interfere so the war could have ended in the first few months. The west need to respect other countries’ systems.
@@adrianchan484 Vietnam has TOTALLY ABANDONED economic communism for over two decades now and has experienced nothing but a miracle due to CAPITALISM. Unfortunately, we are still a politically communist nation and this will soon change. Communism MUST DIE in Vietnam in order for our people and nation to truly advance. Please help us get rid of this hated system. Thank you.
Although it was heavier than the M16, many ANZAC troops thought it a better weapon with it’s 7.62 round having better stopping power and more reliable for jungle conditions.
Yes I know, CGI’ed muzzle flashes and simulated weapons firing is both cost and time efficient but it _still_ makes films striving for gritty realism look like _video games_ . :(
I remember my uncle my dad's brother telling me storys about Vietnam Australia and new Zealand caught bravely he was a pow during the war they broke his legs put bamboo under his finger nails and all sorts till this day he always go's back there for a holiday and loves the Vietnamese people even tho he was treated harshly
The ANZAC boys did a fine job wherever they were placed, greetings from Germany! PS: Did the ANZAC units use the FN FAL and the M16 at the same time in Vietnam? Why?
Pretty sure our boys used Lee Enfields even then since we had a lot of those after the war. But then again, we did have the Yanks as our ally, so the soldiers also did use M16s. Not sure with the FAL, though
The FAL were made under license as the L1A1 SLR, as did most Commonwealth countries. The M16 was the only machine gun around, apart from the British Bren which went out of service in the 50's. They did make an automatic SLR L2A1.
@@cheesedetectiverook5950 FAL was used by units as the time like okanui said. Enfields were phased out as main infantry rifle in favour of the SLR a few years after Korea.
From family that I had that served over there and other knowledge obtained, some units had a choice as to what ones they wanted but there were a set number.
Have you heard of the story that more than 700 Viet Cong soldiers stormed the Thai army in Phuc Tho that night, nearly 200 Viet Cong soldiers were killed and only 200 Thai soldiers were at that time? That night, the United States expected the Thai soldiers to be destroyed for sure, but in the end, Thailand was victorious, able to collect the bodies of the Vietcong and a large number of weapons. This incident resulted in only 2 Thai soldiers killed.🇹🇭🇻🇳😁😁😁🤣🤣🤣
@@braxtonjones6163 Vietcong and NVA used guerrila tactic against American and its allies. They only charged in large number against ARVN after the Paris peace conference.
Most Australian casualties at Long Tan were head wounds as the Australians took to ground and fought on their bellies. The use of helmets were more prevalent after this contact.
The movie was made to tell the story. The director was very clear that he was not going to demonise the Vietnamese like an American director would, the Australian Army respects the NVA as a worthy adversary. The accounts from the soldiers on the ground in this battle clearly state the bravery of the NVA to continue pushing through despite the artillery.
Against Imperialism Invades Laos and threatens Thailand to the point where Thailand said their involvement in the war thwarted Vietnamese expansion into their homeland.
@@braxtonjones6163 I am pretty sure: you are american. I know this because of your alienated point of view. Switch off your tv and your brain will work correctly.
the only soldiers the VC really feared were the Australians. SASR were like the four horsemen for the VC, nick naming them "chicken stranglers". Like Gallipoli this battle is deeply ingrained in the Australian and NZ DNA. Lest we forget.
The NVA & VC are respected by the Australian Army as worthy opponents. I think this movie unlike every Hollywood movie ever made shows that respect the NVA are not demonised they are shown as brave and determined.
Yes god bless the might nation of Vietnam im sorry the white man had done this to you. My grand father attended that war but he sure did regret being there.
What do you think of the officer taking a last drink of beer before leaving the show? He probably knows he has a mess to deal with and needed more anesthetic to deaden the pain to come? He had a concerned facial expression as he got into the vehicle.
So silly how movies are overcooked. Enemy are like bots running in full view, and they initiated the ambush. Where's a movie where there's a quick hail of bullets followed by dead silence. Or a day long battle where both sides are stalemate and they never actually see each other.
Well they could have done that then they wouldn’t have been telling the truth now would they. There’s no excuse there is a brilliant documentary narrated by Sam Worthington detailing accounts of both sides of the battle. This IS what happened there.
@PJ Riverathis was always a misconception. Filipinos did not sent military to fight in the battlefield. We only sent nurses, doctors, engineers and security forces to help the South.
lol we never spray bullets like that, since our ammunitions in reserve is not as great as the US and their allies we only fire 2-3 bullet bursts and also we do not charge in mass-formation like that, only Chinese soldiers do that effects are good, but not history-accurate
