One of the things that gets me about this episode early on is the look that passes between Sid and Eugene's father. Mr. Sledge, having experienced the Great War, knows that Sid is simply sparing Mrs. Sledge's feelings. Amazing non-verbal acting on the part of both actors.

They don't exactly talk about it in the series, but the Marines had their water stored in improperly cleaned crude oil barrels. Heat prostration caused several casualties that morning so the water was rushed up to the front, but when the Marines opened the barrels, all the water inside was brown, oily and contaminated with rust. There's actually color film on RU-vid where the Marines on Peleliu airfield show the camera the water as they're pouring it out and how dirty it was. Engineers tried digging wells earlier that day, but couldn't do it on the hard coral rock and had to try on the beach with limited results. Some people in the Navy had heard about the lack of water and sent some fruit drinks ashore for the Marines, but the historical record indicates that the Marines weren't aware of these developments and remained dehydrated.

Believe it or not, this was only the second day of fighting on the island. That’s how quickly the heat and lack of water affected the Marines. Also, Oswald, the friend of Sledge that was shot in the head while crossing the airfield, told Sledge that he wanted to be a brain surgeon after the war. Such a tragic twist of irony.

The wounds that Conley and Leckie suffered on Peleliu ended their combat duty. Runner returned home but Leckie's injuries were kept him in hospital longer. Bill "Hoosier" Smith survived the mortar wound he received on the island. Of the four buddies, only Chuckler Juergens remains with his machine gun team on Peleliu.

You'd be surprised, but despite how devastated the landscape looked, the airfield sequence took place just on the morning of September 16th, the day after they'd landed, and the fighting that they showed in the lower ridges was around the 17th. Another interesting thing they showed in this episode of the series were the tracked troop carrier vehicles called LVTs being used as amphibious ambulances, like the one that took Leckie away. That was a development that became very common (unfortunately) on Peleliu. This and the last episode also paid homage to some of the Black Marines(named the Montford Point Marines) on Peleliu who fought and /brought up ammunition to the frontline, fired artillery and also carried away the wounded, and you can see that in the scene where Leckie is being carried away from the battlefield, as well as one of them on the beach in episode 5. They were eventually nicknamed the "Black angles" because they were able to get a lot of men carefully out of very hazardous environments on Peleliu. It's also worth noting that in terms of Peleliu's environment, not only was the heat 115°F, but many reported that there was also 100% humidity. Also, the hard coral rock trapped heat similarly to how concrete on a hot sidewalk does, so it reflected off the ground and made the environment feel extremely hot. Light also reflected off of the coral, and so much barren rock and coral had been exposed after the fighting, that when the native Islanders returned they were given sunglasses to prevent temporary blindness from the glare.

24:57 There's a good video here on RU-vid titled "The Pacific (2010): How Much Money Did HBO Lose?" that delves into the budget issues for the show. The show's 10 episodes cost about $215-225M (adjusted for inflation, about $309-325M today) to produce and went somewhere around $15-75M over budget. It unfortunately didn't do very well in terms of viewership, only getting about 30% of what Band of Brothers achieved. Coupled with recuperating at most around $65M back from DVD sales, it was a money sink for HBO. It's probably why they didn't pick up Hanks and Spielberg's next miniseries "Masters of the Air" which released earlier this year after about a decade of production hell. I still love the show just as much as BoB, but I can understand why it didn't resonate as much with the audience.

Pelelieu is where the Japanese started acting more German, putting their faith in positions, supplies, and tactics over "spirit." We knew how to beat that, but weren't expecting it.

As you get towards the end of the series consider watching HACKSAW RIDGE. Itbis not based on a true story it is a true story. It's probably the only war movie where the true story is down played..,.yes I said down played,...because no one would believe the truth. HACKSAW RIDGE will leave you speechless.
