Ride Sydney Mercedes-Benz 0405NHs powered by compressed natural gas and hear the "meow" of the ZF gearbox. A tour arranged by the Sydney Bus Museum on 27 March 2021, heralded the end in late April. Looks like none will survive operational and this sound will be no more. The last were due to operate in service on 30 April 2021.

I loved the mk5's personally. Doing a 311 , or 326/327 in those meant less to worry about when I was at Waverley. They really went and stopped well, we had one (can't remember which #😉) which had no governor and was great for running special up southern cross drive. 👍😅🤣. It didn't muck around going up Arden St either. We loved it 😅🤣😅

They could be temperamental on hot days, but my overall recollection is of a largely pleasant bus to drive when I was at Pt Botany and Waverley. There were older mkll's in service at the time than these are now.

Last year I was on one of these busses when it broke down on the way out of school. It was the first bus out of school, and and about 5 other busses got trapped behind it as it was on a one way, single lane road with trees on one side and a wall on the other, so no one could pass it.

A good Bus to drive but they had no guts especially up hills I remember if you were going down Victoria Rd heading up the Gladesville Bridge you would pray for a green light and that no one wanted to get of or on down at the bus stop so you could get a good run up the Brigade

They'd pop and sputter up the big hills in summer, I had one catch fire on me up Arden St doing a 353. Saved the bus, never got a mention in transit times 😅🤣😅

Beautifully smooth bus to operate; not much power; wonderfully modulated braking system.

Those "information screens" above the corridor never worked, and more than once I had someone complain why wouldn't I "turn on the TV" 😅🤣😅

Where's 1275?. That was a good bus at Waverley and is the actual 380 model from hobbyco. I've got mine 👍. It was pretty cool having a miniature of the very vehicle I often operated 😉👍

Soooo glad I still get to drive non euro compliant diesel buses! Wouldn't be seen as a passenger in an electric bus, let alone be caught driving one!

Goodbye to these atrocious vehicles as there was nothing appealing about them. They were unreliable and extremely slow on the slightest incline. They had a tendency to cough and fart and even stopped when trying to accelerate into traffic or into an intersection. The levelling mechanism often failed causing the bus to lower and scrape gutters and speed humps. They would sometimes raise independently causing problems for passengers trying to CLIMB into the supposedly low floor bus. They would constantly search for a gear making the ride uncomfortable for the passengers. They were noisy and rough. I could go on but I would only bore you. Give me the accelerant and I will happily burn each and every one of them. Typically one handed driving displayed in this video. BTW I did enjoy this very well made video.

Would rather one of them than an OC500LE CNG...

Can the lower and kneel? I’ve never seen one do it
@nickgodfrey1973
@nickgodfrey1973 3 года назад
@@kfcwickedwings They can Kneel but they don't fully lower like some other chassis can. Some of the STA ones even had automatic ramps
@aussiejohn5835
@aussiejohn5835 3 года назад
@@nickgodfrey1973 Hi Nick. The automatic ramps were unreliable and the mechanism was prone to damage when negotiating curbs, Speed humps and roundabouts while using the front overhang. The kneeling feature was for the front door and for the most part could only operate with the door closed. This also had a fault and sometimes raised itself when the door opened.

@@aussiejohn5835 We had O405NH's on Gas, in Perth. Ours were modified with Gas Injection and Turbochargers (1772-1796) and later in life the remaining ones (1797-1819) were modified with a system that ran 3 injectors which fed into the carby). More to the point, I drive the diesel variety at work. I'm well aware of how the levelling and ramp works on them

Gutless #**$ boxes they were, also dodgy front and back doors, they will not be missed by many at Ryde depot, worst investment for the taxpayer they were. The fitters would have had a huge party at Ryde!
