Australian Cattle Dog Right for You and Your Family?

Is the Australian Cattle Dog right for you and your family? Definitely! We are basing our opinion on just this one dog. As with any breed there are variations on a theme. Mr Cody here is a very nice dog I'm sure there are some others that are not. I think generally speaking, however, if they're half as nice as this dog then they're going to be a great dog!

Have a 13 yr old female red, will never be without one, but not for everyone and owners who are hands off, uninvolved, non active, will have a difficult time. And I’m mine and other’s experience, all Heelers are pretty much like Cody! Intensity, concentration, intelligence, energy, hardiness, toughness, absolutely amazing dogs. They shed a ton, will follow closely or Velcro to a person or persons, but need to socialize young and often, not afraid to use their mouth. Just love them and all herding breeds! Good video. So long as you are consistent with vocabulary, and hand signals, they seem to train themselves if you have good habits with dogs. I just snap, whistle, or move heads and hands to get her to do things, they pay extreme attention to peoples body language and facial expressions, and dogs already pay close attention to people.

This is an exceptionally friendly, docile heeler in this video! Which is a bit misleading for this breed. Many are pretty wary of strangers and do not enjoy interactions with unfamiliar people. Cattle dogs can be very difficult at times and shouldn't be recommended to inexperienced owners. They are absolutely phenomenal for people who know exactly what they're getting themselves into though!

You can't mix anything with a border collie to make them smarter(well maybe a wolf, but that's a bad idea) but they are both very smart breeds.

Love the content as per normal. As an Aussie, I definitely wouldn't recommend a heeler for a novice owner for the same reasons you were explaining in the video. They are smart and will pick up bad behaviours just as quick as good ones and if you don't give them a job to do, they will "round up" and nip at people.
@AmericanStandardK9

Appreciate the info for sure. All dogs behave better when they have a job. I have heard of the herding or round up behavior from this breed and others. Something to think about

The cool thing about Heelers is that they are a very, very healthy breed. You don't want a dog that racks up never ending vet bills. I would say getting a dog is such a long term investment in time, maybe get the dog you want and then hire a professional trainer to allow you to have success in the home. The other option is get an easy dog to get experience and then get the dog you want in 8-14 years. Just don't get a dog you can't handle and then compound it by not getting a trainer. If you can't afford a trainer then its time to just get an easy dog, I guess.

Mines a little over a year old, I’m 20 and he’s my first personal dog. He used to be with me all day everyday and I had him on the right track but life took an unexpected turn which made me get a higher paying job but he couldn’t be around. He suffered an injury and I couldn’t train him to be what I wanted being a high energy breed. I found this channel tonight and I’m going to use the training methods he teaches in these videos to make him the best I can and might be able to get him to be a shop dog again.

They are great dogs, I have a Red (Red Foreman) that is super smart and obedient until he is not. They can have issues being stuck to their family and not be ok around others. He knows how to train people! My wife and 15 year old son get taken advantage by him all the time. They also need a ton of exercise physically and mentally! I do scent work with our Heeler and working line GSD to help stimulate their brain and give them a job to do. Agility, fly ball, and herding sheep for fun are a couple of things they excel at. Thank you for the video

Took me a solid 2 years to get my blue heeler where he is calmer and listens well. Never trained a dog for off leash and I thought I might try that soon but everything else he does so well with. I use a gentle leader face harness when walking or taking him places and he is so well behaved people are always wanting to say hello to him. I know most heelers are standoffish but mine got his mothers personality because he is an absolute social butterfly. First ever heeler I've had an it was a lot of work to get him here but well worth it.

I got my blue heeler/blackmouth cur mix at 2 months old. He is now going on 6 months. Absolutely one of the smartest dogs I've been around, and just like you said, they take advantage of that. Thank you for all the tips. He is becoming very well behaved. I see so many of his traits in Cody. They are great dogs around people and very protective of their people and property. They just need a little help to be kept in line.. especially being a blackmouth cur mix, he wants to be a wild man!

My last two dogs have been ACD x GSD cross. Very smart right away as puppies, but can become stubborn as soon as they learn they can. They are a working breed and never tire. Walking is 45 minutes minimum per day but the longer you walk them/work them the sweeter they behave. Over 1 hr walks per day is ideal. Really family dogs, I can't imagine how they would behave if left alone, they would probably go feral. The earlier you can socialize them the better. I have a cat and I was able to train one dog to leave her alone, but the youngster won't stop herding her so we have gates in the house.

We have an Australian Cattle Dog Mix (53%) but definitely could be pure bread from what I see in her. Everything Garret described about the beautiful pup in the video is spot on with what we have experienced with our. Ours loves open field running, we are fortunate to have a 10 acre open (unfenced) play area for her to run and explore. Love this dog and would definitely consider owning another.

I have owned 2 red heelers and they were my favorite dogs I've owned in the sense of training and property management when it came to unwanted animals. One was a rescue off the street with health issues as a puppy and he passed from a massive seizure last year. My female got rattle snake bit over night because she didn't like sleeping inside the house. She wanted to sleep outside every night. I miss them both greatly.

As a cattle dog owner of an 8 year old acd and a 6 week old acd (she's still with her momma but lives next to me so I see her daily) I agree. ACD are the best family dogs if you put in the work! My 8 year old heeler has been raised with my 9 year old and I trust her with my life and my daughter's. My lab/pittie rescue as well. But I truly believe it depends on the family. If they don't work with their dogs and cats then they are your typical "has started to chew" shelter pup.

My heeler's name is Jade. She is very sweet, cuddly and affectionate with me.. but she hates pretty much everyone.. except for a handful of people. Product of living with me for 4 years I guess.. haha.. I am not exactly a social butterfly. As for her training, she is very obedient and calm in semi controlled or spread out situations, it is just the closer proximity type of situations where she doesnt do too well. She would never just maul someone, but she just doesnt want anyone coming into our bubble for any reason at all. Since she insists on protecting me.. I will be trying to harness/control it to whatever degree I can. It would be nice to have worded commands for her to like be at ease, standby, or to act accordingly depending on the situation. Also.. her coat is till amazingly soft.. sticker/burr proof.. not much really sticks to her.

How have you never worked with an ACD? I love your chanel! But really? Im so jealous you get to experience this for the first time. We love our ACD. Shes just finished on/off leash, ecollar obedience training. And she holds her own against any large breed, including the Malinois. I didnt wanna do the prong/ecollar method. I thought we were doing pretty good on our own. But then we found your channel, and it inspired us to get professional training so our ACD could live her best life, with a lot more freedom, and me having a lot more confidence that she is going to listen when I speak. As sweet and well behaved as she is, thats still a lot of crazy energy with about 45lbs of muscle to back it up. I have seen them used for protection and guard work. We want to do guard work with ours now that we are done with ecollar obedience. Truly, the best dog I have ever worked with. Please post more videos with ACD!

I had a red heeler, Buddy, for 13 years. I’ve had a blue, Reggie, for five years. These are the most amazing dogs on the planet in my opinion. All they want is to make you happy by burning calories. Your job is to figure out how you want the calories burned. The love learning new things and going places. I’m blessed with my career to not have to leave my dog at home alone much. I’m not sure if recommend this breed if you work 9-5 and no one is home. I hear they can be destructive in that environment. Mine haven’t been but I haven’t left them regularly for long periods. But they definitely want to go with you everywhere you go. Go to the bathroom the dog is with you. Get the mail the dog is with you. Get up to grab the remote, the dog is with you. They will turn on the guilt when you have to leave them behind. They act like they’re on death row.

Live on the Canadian prairies where there are lots of these around & grew up on a farm with them. Hes right about everything he said, you have to train them and give them a job & socialize them well cause they will become destructive & can be nippy to humans. They can chase cattle, be aggressive guard dogs, keep coyotes away. You can bike with them and they will stay 6 inches from you. Train them & they are awesome. Don't & beware. You dont see many of these or border collies in cities cause of there high energy needs so you need space or an active lifestyle.

Beautiful, thanks for the video! Never thought them to be as sweet, one hears so many stories about owners who can't handle their Aussies, and then they go chasing and nipping everything that moves. But I can confirm that having smart dogs can be challenging; I caught my working line German Shepherd deliberately deceiving me lately: Pretending very convincingly to just be casually sniffing around, and then inch closer and closer towards something she deemed interesting (in that case, a flock of sheep and goats). Then, upon recalling her, you could tell from her posture that she knew exactly what she was doing, and that she wasn't supposed to; got that "Uh-oh, I might be in trouble there..."-look in her eyes. See, they tell you "dogs don't lie", but I wouldn't be so sure about it.

Great videos!!! I have a 14 month old border heeler with 25% pitbull in her. My first dog. She was a rescue from tennessee, and we took her in at 4 months. Very hyper, was aggressive towards other dogs but now is much better. She is only 32lbs but very strong and smart. I've always had cats, but wow what a difference. I walk her twice everyday and let her run for a good hour a day in the yard. She is mouthy and loves to chew on himalayan dog chews for hours. They have strong jaws. She is great with my kids. She likes tasks and a job, so I include her when I'm working around the house, with hopes to tire her out mentally. She is very alert, protective, loyal, loves routine, and treats everything as a potential threat - probably their herding instinct. It is nice to see her playing with other dogs in the neighborhood now. She holds her own against much larger dogs, and the cattle dogs have a look to them, its almost intimidating, she is not afraid of larger dogs one bit - again from their herding background and breed, but its good to be always be careful. I really can't ask for a better dog.

Great video. I've had a wonderful rottweiler, Malinois, Jack Russell and now a blue heeler. She's sweet, obedient, and a wonderful companion who puts a smile on my face and my families', too. Her job is to bring me sticks/branches from around the property for me to dispose. She looks like a longhorn steer when bringing me long branches. Within 30 seconds of entering a dog-park she tells the other dogs with no ambiguity who's boss and bends them to her will. It makes no difference how big the other dogs are; heck, even the largest dogs in the dog-park are smaller than cattle. Regarding the end of the video, I wouldn't have picked "turd" although I understand. I would've picked "super-smart, tough, relentless, focused bugger with zero quit who loves to do her job and also play."

Blue Heelers can be very territorial and nippy aggressive. That is not a criticism, they are bred to be tough and to hold their ground against livestock, and survive the Australian outback. They are extremely intelligent, and very high energy. They are bred to be able to run and run and run all day. Blue Heelers are a working and they absolutely need a job to do, they need a purpose. They are also unreliable a dog parks and they are known to nip strangers. These aren't criticisms, but they are NOT suitable for every family. Not suitable for apartments unless your happy to be taking him out for 2 -4 hours every single day. They are NOT easy like a Labrador or Golden Retriever.

AuCaDo s only need to run full speed once or twice a day (sessions) then make great small home / city dogs. Purebred blue heelers are all the same, had one for 18yrs. Called "shadow" or "velcro" dogs for a reason; great herding/working breed. Always thought they would make great police dogs, altho it would require mondeo / french ring style bite holds to the knees /ankle / foot and a solid ~45lb male Heeler can basically do anything a small shepherd can do, plus tons more. Mine was SAR and first responder dog in AK; favored by the sheriffs dept to come and herd black bears away from peoples garbage cans, which saved them alot of time standing around...

I accept that in rare cases (eg worrying livestock) there maybe a case for their use but these should only be used by professionals who know what they are doing, not ordinary dog owners.

You need to consider that this breed can handle the heat too.

Yeah sure Australian Shepherds and the Blue Healers are smart and sassy in their own rights guess what happens when you mix the breeds😂😂. I had that mix breed while growing up and she was the best dog we ever had. Always watched out for my brother and I from snakes (and discipline 😂) and my dad from multiple crazy cows. She didn't put up with strangers being asses around us, and was so loving to everyone.

Another Aussie cattle dog is the kelpie. Not ideal for most families to own because they are very energetic dogs that needs plenty of stimulation.

Their bite drive comes because they were bread with the dingo when the bread was created.

Love my heelers. I have a blue heeler and a heeler/ border collie mix. Amazing and smart dogs. Very protective. My blue heeler is always on point. Always watching our surroundings. Perfect dog for camping. Chased off a few bears and has no problem catching her own dinner. Let's just say rabbits, groundhogs and birds etc stand no chance lol

We don't recommend until at least 5 months or older and only with professional training on proper use of the tool. Unleashed on DIYK9.com covers this in depth.

They are called Heelers because the guy that created the breed had the last name Heeler...has nothing to do with their behavior.

I have had two blue healers, and I would never recommend them to a novice dog owner. These dogs are working dogs they have to have a lot of mental stimulation and physical stimulation. And the fact that you didn’t demand of Cody to do a perfect heel, I’m sorry to say but he got one over on you. I know that you read the comments and you won’t give two thoughts about what we say because we’re just heeler owners. But healers can get in a lot of trouble and end up at the kill shelter because the families don’t know what to do with this out-of-control smart dog that has outsmarted them. Let me ask you did Cody ever give you the cattle dog eye? Do you know what that is? And if he did did you try to jack him up for it?

That dog did work before this video started. That's the real lesson.. exhaust your dog. They don't do anything but chew, rest, eat, drink, or exercise. This dude talking About bite training a heeler is ironic... my heeler is sweet as pie, but if you get near her home, she will tear you up. She crawls to lovers. She attacks weird vibe.

BEWARE these dogs are not for most people, especially city people. They are working cow dogs WORKING dogs. They take a lot more attention, energy and training than the average dog such as labs. This guy maybe a trainer however he doesn’t even know that cattle dogs do get “wiry hair”. He should work with the breed more and be more informed before promoting a breed. I have cattle dogs and have years upon years of personal experience.

Luv these guys but warning to beginners do your research. Hate seeing these guys being rehomed when not trained or socialized properly. They have dingo in their genetics so there is a bit of pack mentality in their instincts and needs a confident handler. My guy is my best friend and goes everywhere with me especially solo backpacking trips.

Heelers that are not train will be a problem. Heelers are half dingo so they need to be trained well.
