When she said that they added a trumpet, it broke my heart a little. It's a saxophone.

Every time someone discovers Pink Floyd, an angel gets its wings. It was a good decision to just listen and get into it sonically at first before diving into the lyrics. But understanding the lyrics will add so much.

Apologies for the long story I felt compelled to share: This album is my favorite piece of art of any kind. 9 years ago my mother became very ill and we were waiting for the end. My sister and I traded days on duty and off to keep our sanity. On one of my “Days off” I went to a music festival. One band was a Pink Floyd cover band that did the entire album from start to finish. During “Time” my sister called and said our mom had taken a turn for the worse and she’d call me back if I had to come to the hospital. As “Money”started I got another call saying she had passed. That meant she died while I was listening to “The Great Gig in the Sky” being played live. My mom loved to sing and was in several choirs. That song is about dying, fighting against it, and accepting it. It also is just a female vocalist. That song, and album, took on a whole new meaning for me. Anyway, loved the reaction. The Wall would be great next.

When the piano started Great Gig in the Sky, she said Ooh, piano I like where this is heading. I was thinking, oh honey, you have no idea where this is heading. LOL

The Great Gig in the Sky is about what happens to the soul at death. The first part (pain) is about "what happened to me?" The second part is bargaining. The the third part is acceptance. So, Mary, you have taken the first step down an amazing path. You have eaten the appetizer, now get ready for the entree. Watch the 1994 Pink Floyd Pulse concert. And have a supply of tissues on hand, yes, the music is that powerful. Watch out for the flying pigs-I'm not kidding, you will see flying pigs in the concert.

When you're not listening for us, you should listen to the whole thing a second time for you.

Dark Side of the Moon is one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

This album sold a lot of speakers. Still does.

"And then one day you find ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun." Time. Being wasted. One of the main themes of this classic album. It will be studied by serious academics and loved by new fans in a hundred years.

The Great Gig in the Sky: her name is Clare Tory. She was a 25 year old session vocalist hired by the band for three hours. She came into the studio did two and half completely improvised takes and ascended into immortality.

Knowing that this album explores themes such as conflict, greed, time, death, and mental illness. It is such an incredible work of art the band did

What's even greater is all the effects and sounds were done by hand. No computers. Cutting and taping to create their sound.

Boy do I miss the days when a radio station would put this on and let it play (usually while the DJ went up on the roof to get high). Hearing this on your car radio while driving home at 3:30 am - alone on the road through a blizzard… magic.

The woman singing was doing the part of the guitar , just mimicking it in her voice. It only took her 2 takes. I went to many of their concerts , and they put on a light show that blows your mind. Not to mention the music . 🎸

I was 14 years old when DSOTM came out. The first time I heard it was when I was flipping through my older brothers album collection. I was at home with one of my friends, we were baked out of our minds and put it on the turntable. And just like that, my whole perspective on music changed. I’m so glad you enjoyed it!

For your info, great gig in the sky was sung by "Clare Torrey" a studio session singer that the band asked to fill in, they asked her to sing the emotions without words, she didnt utter a SINGLE word it was done in 2 takes, she didnt like the first one so asked to sing it again.finished the second take, took her 20 pound session fee and left. she didnt know they had used the track till she saw the album on sale with her name on the credits. it took them 3 years to find her again as she had got married and moved away from the area to another city and had stopped singing. your feeling were so instant that i can see you FEEL music, a note or run can make you feel a certain way. its what MUSIC is all about.music heard generates feelings, tension and release, Happy and sad, vulnerable and strong, this skill is ALL around, there are HUNDREDS of great musicians out there along with singers. You should do more reactions specially to "concept" albums. your reactions are honest and plain. BTW the "trumpets" you referred to are actually Saxophones, 2 types are played by floyd members. First time i found your channel and have subscribed, cant wait to see more reactions like this.

“We and you” is such a simple yet strong statement!!! Such isolation and remoteness in 3 words

Two things: 1) the woman who sang the solo vocalizations in "Great Gig in the Sky," Clare Tory, eventually won an out-of-court settlement for co-composition credit, since she improvised all of that melody on her own; 2) the instrument that joins into the middle of "Money" is a saxophone.

David Gilmour is one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

The woman on Great Gig in the Sky is Clare Torry. Hired by the band they asked her to improvise a none lyrical vocal track over the song, of which she did 2 1/2 times. She thought she did poor and left but the band loved her performances so much they used some from each take. Its very cool to see this album still finding new generations 50 years on with no signs of stopping.

“This is so futuristic” … imagine how it sounded back in ‘73? I used to call it the sound effects album, I was about 12 at the time. I’m 61 now and I’m still listening to it.

Mary actually listening to one of the best bands on Earth? I'm amazed! This experience is literally out of this world and so surreal. The saxophone was great in "Money."

Pink Floyd performs all the songs on the album at their famous 1994 Live Pulse concert along with many other great songs. If you’re down the rabbit hole you’ll definitely want to check out the Pulse concert. The sounds and visual quality are epic. If you start with Shine on you Crazy Diamond there’s a text string that introduces the band. But the entire concert is one epic mic drop after another.

This is the type of music that you lay down on the floor of your bedroom and listen to with clunky headphones

I am so glad that you are listening to the entire album. I don't know if it's still the case but for the longest time many, especially music critics, considered this the best album in history. Pink Floyd is definitely one group you want to listen to on your headphones. The sound mixing is very important and so a live performance doesn't yield the same effect. Alone and with our headsets on is the way this music was designed to be heard. If on the other hand you want to hear a live performance that stands out, try anything from Jethro Tull which is of the same period. Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, and the Moody Blues is why we oldsters are so snobbish about our music. By the way the guy in charge of sound mixing started his own band and they have many albums, that band is called The Alan Parsons Project.

One of the best albums ever made. It's an early album in the "progressive rock" genre, and an early concept album meant to be listened to from beginning to end in one sitting. I've heard it described as "the Sgt. Pepper's of the '70's". The 1973 edition of this album was engineered by Alan Parsons, whose first gig was as assistant engineer on the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album. After this, he became a record producer. He worked on Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" and "Time Passages" albums. Then he became a composer, too, making some 18 concept albums under the names "The Alan Parsons Project" (with Eric Woolfson) and "Alan Parsons". He's still recording and touring today. Alan gave an interview for the "Professor of Rock" channel on RU-vid a while back, where he told some stories about the making of this album: There was no digital processing at the time; everything was done with analog equipment (e.g. synthesizers and sequencers) and analog tape. The tape machines could record up to 16 tracks, so anything needing more than that had to be combined, either with multiple microphones or by mixing and re-recording while trying to minimize noise from the tapes. The sound effects at the beginning of "Time" and "Money" were individually recorded and mixed down, a very tedious task. "The boys" asked Alan if he knew anyone who could do the female vocal on "The Great Gig in the Sky," and he called in Clare Torry on short notice for a recording session on a Sunday afternoon. The music was kind of vague, and she had to write her part. She tried to put words to the music, but Alan (wagging his finger) said that "the boys" said no words, just sounds. In the end, he agreed it was the best choice. Clare recorded the lead vocal for one of the songs on Alan's "Eve" album. The first track of his "Eye in the Sky" album has the intro for seemingly every major league sports event. He also did the movie soundtrack for the movie "Ladyhawke".

Pink Floyd is well known for creating what is known as concept albums. These are heavily "produced" albums where all the tracks have a connected theme taking you on a ride. Many times, they blend musical and non-musical sounds, often fading one track into the next. The album producer on this album, Alan Parsons, went on to form The Alan Parsons Project which has a similar sound and was known for putting out concept albums. Other well known artists who created concept albums (in various genres) include Kate Bush (Hounds of Love), David Bowie, The Beatles (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band), STYX (Kilroy Was Here), The Who, Genesis, The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds), and Enigma.. to name a few. This is the kind of album where you want to listen to the entire album in one go rather than individual tracks. You simply turn down the lights, put on the headphones, lay back and let the music wash over you.

Not many people catch on right away - the song with the woman screaming is called - The Great Gig in the Sky. What gig do people have in the sky? She's dying - first she's pissed then she accepts...

The great gig in the sky depicts stages of dying without words (fear, acceptance and peace) Claire Torry was a session singer and performed this perfectly on the second or third take and didn't know whether it was even going on the album until she heard it after purchasing a record. She was later credited for her part in this masterpiece.

The Great Gig in the Sky always brings tears to my eyes. It's about the 5 stages of death. You must watch the Pulse concert version of it. It will make you cry.

It’s truly something: when I heard this album in full for the first time, it was already ten years old. Me being a teenager with no older sibling to initiate me into the classics (as it were) I bought an old vinyl LP at the used-record store after hearing “Money” and “Brain Damage” on the radio. Sitting and listening to it straight through, I reacted almost exactly as you did (although having played the saxophone, I knew one when I heard it😂). The truly magical thing about this album is that it SO rewards repeat listenings! Not only is it one of the most perfect audio productions ever put to tape, I could hear you reacting to the depth of sounds and layers in the mix and arrangements. And I promise you this, Mary - listen to DSOTM every now and then as you get older, and it will keep hitting you on new emotional levels every time. Truly a masterpiece.❤

Another great album from them is called " ANIMALS ". Then of course you have " The Wall " & " Wish You Were Here ". And " Live At Pompeii "

Pink Floyd is Legendary, they are on a level all their own. One of the greatest Rock bands ever, this album has sold, (and continues to sell", over 55 million copies. It also has the record of the most weeks on Billboards Top 100 Albums of All Time list, almost 1000 weeks! That's over 19 years, no other bands even come close. "The Dark Side Of The Moon" album is considered by many, including Rock Critics, as the greatest Rock album of all time. The layers of music and the sounds Pink Floyd incorporates in their music is iconic, especially for an album released in 1973!

My parents would play this for me to fall asleep to when I was young and it always goes as #1 on any favorite albums of all time list! It's crazy how this album sounds like it was recorded yesterday!

As a teen when I was able to spend my own money i bought this album from the record store & I when I got home i just laid on my bed in the dark just feel’n my best riding out each song. Think of how amazing it was 40-50 years ago when people were finally able to change from mono to stereo sound. This had to be an amazing impact to the senses.

I was 12 years old when the album came out. Had my first kiss while listening to Us and Them with my new girlfriend. The 70's were the best of times.

This is not an album of 10 songs - it is ONE track in ten parts. It basically tells the life story of each of us.

Alan Parsons is one of best engineers in the studio. The album was recorded in the studio where he worked. He believed this was going to be a major creative work and so arranged the studio schedule do that he was the only engineer that worked on it. This album was the first of many Grammy nominations he received for his engineering work

This album was engineered by Alan Parsons. The group, Pink Floyd had several albums before this, but it was this album that took them to a whole other level. Back in '72 the stereo effect from the song "Time" was incredible to experience.

First time I heard this album with my girlfriend she melted into my arms and every lyric was about us. That memory is more than 50 years old.

I don't know when you'll listen to this album again, but definitely listen to it again at least once every 10 years as your life progresses. You'll find more meaning every decade of your life as the album is about life.The album starts with a hearbeat and ends with a heartbeat.

"Echos Live in Pompeii" is one you need to listen to! You also have a group down under called "Australian Pink Floyd" With concerts going on now, but the concerts are in the U.S. right now! They do a pretty good job IMO! It is all pretty simple! Pink Floyd Rocks!!! The female soloist on The Great Gig In the Sky is Clare Torry, and she takes you through the beginning, the living and the ending of life! (listen closely to the faint word in the beginning). Be careful waving those claws around and rock on young lady! AND you certainly need more Pink Floyd in your life after watching your reaction! They have been in mine since 1969!!! One thing to remember, Pink Floyd is not just music, It is an experience ! And they take you from here to there and anywhere in between, then back again most of the time! BUT with any music it is how and where you can relate to it in your life! IMO, Enjoy!
