Yes!!! Environmental enrichment!!! I have a royal python in a 40g house with all sorts of things for her to do and she absolutely explores in there. So many keepers swear that tubs and racks are better but I can’t imagine putting her in one with nothing to do. That leads me to believe that environmental enrichment is an important aspect of keeping captive snakes.

I just rewatched this video & GTP are on my bucket list. This breeder spoke about making more consistent vertebral pattern & doing his husbandry naturally to promote healthy animals. Yet he said he now incubates at a consistent temperature in an incubator. He mentioned not being able to manipulate the temperature of the incubator for different/subsequent clutches, which I can understand. That said, both you & I know that it is totally possible for the females to incubate their own clutches, therefore offering each individual clutch those necessary adjustments for a thorough developmental process. I submit to this breeder that he should follow your example & offer nesting opportunities for his animals, in order to see if this promotes more vertebral patternation. Even then things aren't quite so simple. A wild gravid female will seek specific location which support her egg development. Also environmental conditions vary from one micro locality to another, thus each situation is slightly different. To address these discrepancies, I submit that for a period of several successive years, slight alterations could be made to the ambient conditions for each maternal group. Overall a pattern may emerge or some other noticeable changes to patternation of neonates. He sure has some stunning animals to run these experiments with & I would also be interested to see his results in a follow up video, when you get the time.

6 years later I still want to know what the results from his UV experiment, did it have any effect in the snakes overall appearance?

Really impressed that the great untouchable issue of genetic mutation was openly discussed here. It is an issue that herpers often try to ignore - to the detriment of our hobby.... and those green guys are so beautiful.....

Very informative video Pete, Thanks for interviewing Michael Cermak on the Green Tree Python. This ought to help out anyone who might want to get into these beauties. I've always been fascinated by them but never owned one. Currently I own 3 Ball pythons. 1 is at 5 ft in length that I think is a cinnamon, I rescued it., Another is just over 2 ft that is an orange dream ghost morph, the third is a bit under 2 ft and it's a high white pied but I don't know what else is in it just yet. Trying to figure that out.

Highly interesting, and what truly magnificent snakes. I remember that in the distant days of my youth, these were classified as chondropython, but it seems they are now in the carpet python genus.

john schlesinger I think they are still (Morelia viridis) genus chondropython and carpets are still (Morelia spilota) genus but the two are being bread to make carpondros not sure about the spelling not my strong suit lol but I prefer the normal GTP’s/ carpets such beautiful snakes I love the green of the GTP’s 😍just stunning
