I have a Kelpie. He is a wonderful companion. We hike 2-3 times a day because his current yard is small. Very high energy! Also very loyal and loving. 💞
Thank you for this. I just adopted one from a shelter, I have or have had many working breeds over the years but my new little guy definitely has some differences. He's superior additute combined with his independence, intensity, and passion for keeping busy is fun but can be exhausting.
I spent 4 months with my uncle's kelpie in Australia. On 2000 acres and 1000 sheep. Those dogs are the most amazing breed there is. He might as well have been human
I have a 5 yr old Kelpie. Smartest dog I've ever had. She's been very adaptable. She started out living with me in the country. She got to spend her days free to run. But now unfortunately in the last couple years her and I have lived in an apartment because of my horrible health issues. She does go out on long walks on a leash on trails with my friend. In the winter shes lucky cuz she gets to run along beside him on a leash when he's cross country skiing. He's amazed at how quickly she figured out how to do that after never being on a leash the first 3 years of her life. I was worried she'd never be able to manage the change of being a town dog. But its like she understands that this is what is now needed of her. She's turned into this amazing companion dog that looks after me. It's a job she takes very seriously and is very happy and content to hang out with me. When my pain gets really bad she comes and sits by me , laying her head on me. I see the love and concern in her eyes. So gentle and sweet. This is not the life I had planned for her and I feel so sad its come to this. But she's seriously fine with it. She just wants to be with me no matter what. She's my best friend. I adore my Kelpie
😭😭😭😭 I am literally living this transition now. And I am having the same experience. Though I hope to have her back on some land at some point. Thanks so much for sharing makes me feel less alone in our experience. 🥰
Dogs just want to be with their person, they can adapt to anything once that bond has been established. I've travelled around the world and back with several dogs of different breeds. They all adapt as long as they are with you, that is the key 💚
Yeah, I take exception to the comintater saying these dogs are not for apt living... Neither am I but mine is adapting better than me... Turned off the sound and enjoying the kelpie video...
mate bless you both. if you look around, see if there's a dog agility club near you. maybe they'll understand your situation and find someone to run her through her paces with you on the sidelines. They're a one person dog, she is yours and you are hers, but as you say, she's smart, she might get it, she might even love it. Failing that, those little red dogs don't mind at all if you let them out to run behind the car on the back trails.
I have one. Took me years to figure out what breed he his. Best dog I’ve ever had. I love him and will recommend this breed anyday to anyone. Caydes his name. What is not included in this video is that they are bully’s. Literally. They just bully you until they get what they want hahah. Cayde is obsessed with balls. He fetches 2 not one at same time, very clever.
I have had my dog 2 years and I was just told today she was Kelpie. I always thought she was a small German shepered probably mixed with something else. I got her at a rescue. Now everything I'm reading makes me convinced she is Kelpie. How special. I love to hear that the things I love about her are very real.
I will say, my boy is the one who gets bullied - he's got the more anxious traits of the breed, so the cats and my other dog get their way always. He is the only one smart enough to open doors or get into something they all want, though, and adept at alerting us to when one of the others is being naughty - he has genuinely imposed upon himself the job of household tattletale.
Adopted a 4 month old Kelpie at the shelter 2 years ago. Previously have had a Border Collie, German Shepherd, and a Lab. Have to say my Kelpie has been the easiest and most obedient dog I've ever had the pleasure to be around. He's careful with the horses, good with other dogs, boundless energy outside but great in the house, does tricks, very trainable, no destructive habits at all. He is suspicious of strangers but just to let me know there is someone there... no aggression just awareness. Loves to play. Best. Dog. Ever. 🐾🐾 ❤
My adopted female Kelpie is such a sweet and energetic dog! She loves my older adopted dog & my 3 cats. Such a wonderful addition to my fur family. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Adopted a very skinny 9-10 yo rescue dog and was told she is a GSD mix. But she looks more like a solid black Kelpie (smaller build, much smaller paws that any GSD I've seen) and that labrador-like double coat that shows a brown-red undercoat when she blows coat. She's WONDERFUL, smart, the sweetest, gentlest dog I've ever met and came intensely bonded with a young tabby cat (I wouldn't have dreamt of separating them!) that I think my doogo adopted as a kitten. They head-butt each other and licked one another. The tabby cat often acts like it's a dog Both animals arrived terribly emaciated but now are here and thriving, for however long they have on this planet.
I’ve always had kelpie’s, working dogs on the farm would have a litter under the shearing shed and I’d always get one! Best bloody dogs in the world! Smart, hard working, loyal and an amazing protector!
I have an all black Australian Kelpie-saved him from the streets when he was around 1 yr old. Named him Pablo- he is super intelligent, a good photo model, very good house protector, a baby animal lover, but as said in this video, at first ,when meeting new people I have to hold him and be very careful. But overall he's very smart oh and he adores playing fetch. he is hypnotised by it.
Im sure these dogs never run out of e energy. My sister got one lovely dog but but she's mental. She loves pawing the hell out of you as well. I'm not sure if that's a common thing with these pups
It is a misconception to think that kelpies need to go hard all day. Kelpies do not really have an off switch, but can drive themselves and everyone else a bit crazy if they don't stop. Kelpies, here in Australia, can in fact kill themselves with working too hard for too long in the heat so it is important as a kelpie owner to be aware of this. Training in calmness needs to begin as a puppy. The dogs need to learn to switch off as well as to switch on, and it takes judicious care by an owner to help them do this. Certainly a dog needs a couple of, or even three good sessions of activity (preferably with some problem solving and some job outcomes) a day, at regular time (remember dogs LOVE and thrive on routines), but these sessions should always be answered by the dog being made to calm down and rest. Traditionally the dog would be chained up to enforce rest, or crated. For a kelpie this is not cruel, it can be called "meditation" time where the dog is learning to be calm. I also like to train a puppy to spend time with me, resting at my feet, whether tied up or required to stay and stop. With some dogs this needs to be taught, maybe with a food reward for every 20 seconds or so of quiet time. If you do this, you will have a much more even tempered and better working dog or companion.
My son adopted a Kelpie in Colorado. The sweetest boy. I love how smart and sensitive he is. Specific traits include putting his paw on my head while I'm sleeping, hardly barks unless necessary, loves all dogs and cats, crosses paws often, sleeps in contorted positions with his tongue out and loves chasing and destroying sticks.
What's your favorite thing about Australian Kelpies? Do you already have one of these active, lively, and independent guys in your family? What's that one message you would like to give someone who's thinking of bringing a Kelpie home? Do let us know in the comments!
We have one at my house and he’s the sweetest little fella. He loves the beach, can play ball for hours. Not really a fan of most other dogs, but absolutely loves humans. He is super cuddly, good with kittens and is an all around good boy. Easily the best dog I’ve ever met.
We’ve had a red cloud female for nearly 4 years. She has adapted to living in the suburbs quite well. She’s energetic and enjoys walks in the neighbouring parks and chasing the ball & rope as well as the beach. She’s very astute, loyal & protective and also great with kids. I find her a an ideal city pet, if you provide her with the right exercise & training. She’s not a fussy eater either!
Kelpie own you more then you own them. They have a natural want to bond with you and your family. They will test pecking order so you need to be aware and make sure they understand where they fit in as a special part of the family. You gotta run em daily or you won't sleep. Plenty of excise! They are are extremely smart and you need to continuously use their brains. They'll take up a part of your heart you never knew existed. I love kelpie, I am kelpie for life
Super smart, confident, and loyal to a tee. If you plan on getting a Kelpie, make sure you are in it for life. The exercise and training can be a bit tough for some, but they bond so strongly it's hard on them to give them up.
I found my kelpie in the Mojave desert!! Someone had abandoned her at the campsite I was staying at. Although that is sad, she left with me which was very good for her! we came back to Texas and she lives with me now.
I adopted a 6 year old black Kelpie from the DFL or Dumb Friends League last year who actually had 2 homes before finding me, Thor that’s his name well his first home was when he was a puppy 🐶 and his owner gave him up because it was too much for his original owners older dog, his second home gave him up because he kept escaping and if what I think is true then I don’t blame him for wanting him to get away, so here’s what I think his second family did to him, I’m about 80% sure that Thor was kept locked in a bathroom because he didn’t want anything to do with my bathroom Thor would stand by the door but wouldn’t enter it, so in order to get him over his fear I put a leash on him and brought him into the bathroom and took the leash off saying that it’s not so bad and that I was with him and Thor got over his fear, I know that Kelpie’s are highly intelligent for 2 reasons the first one being that the moment we met each other Thor just knew that I was the human who would take care of him for the rest of his life, the shelter told me that he was nervous around anyone new but one sniff and he let me pet him and on the way home he went quite as soon as I started to pet him, also on the way home Thor actually licked my elbow and once we got home and did a little exploring Thor let me hug him, the shelter gave me the bed Thor used while he was staying with them but Thor chose to sleep with me on my bed during the first day as well and has never gotten on his bed or used his blanket from the shelter either, the second reason I know that Thor’s intelligent 🤓 is because he knows where home is both front and back door, Thor has slipped his collar on a few occasions but that’s when I first got him but not once has he ever run away, I trust Thor enough that when we come in from going poop 💩 in our backyard which isn’t fenced that as soon as we’re at the door I remove his expansion lead cause I know that he’s going to stay right by my side, he’s going to be 8 this year on 8/24 since that’s the day I got him I also decided to make it his birthday 🎉 as well so if anyone has any suggestions on what to get my cuddle bug then please respond to my comment
Had 2 of these . Best most loyal & smart dogs. Can do anything . Very indipendant thinkers. Mine just knew how to behave at all times & knew who to trust . My girl dog was smart enough to drive this computer , but her paws would not let her. Not intimidating size but VERY protective of their own. Great guard dogs too. Best dogs I've ever had. You need to have time to train them .
Since 3 years ago I adopt a puppy and finally now I know he was Kelpie breed….. no wonder it’s always too much of energy, even having walk for 1 hours still not even feel tired …..
My sister has female kelpie (ruby) which is a great family pet. Gental with young children and very easy to walk off leash. Very good at vacuuming up crumbs too in the house.
Im looking after my friends kelpie. Hes known as the dumbest dog we know. Maybe he was dropped on his head at birth 😅😅 he is very good with kids and other animals though.
My first dog was a black and tan one. Lived in a country town with a 3 acre yard and she wore dirt tracks into grass running around all day. Please don't get one if you live in a small property.
I got our baby girl when she was about 3-4 months old and we were told she was as a German shepherd mix. She destroyed our backyard and chewed everything she could get her jaws own. Wasn’t until she turned about 9 months that we realized she was more kelpie than Shepard. This video is very accurate. She needs a lot of exercise and commands to keep her calm. We have two toddlers and almost gave her up because we didn’t know how to train her. But for sure loooong or super fast paced walks plus dog park visits and 20 mins of commands helps so much with her biting/chewing. Hope this helps anyone
She is also very child friendly! I know there is alllllways a chance a dog can snap but so far she does not mind our 2 year old yanking on her ears or randomly pulling her coat. That being said with her energy always keep an eye out
My kelpie doesn't get to work but boy does she love going mountain biking with me. Well, I ride the bike, she just trots along and chases squirrels. Really good way to tire her out without being a ranch owner
It's a misconception that they can't be house dogs I've had Kelpies for many years As long as you are active and keep them mentally stimulated, they are fine around the home They are very headstrong and full of character Other than that this video is pretty darn spot on Just make sure you have time and like to play
I just lost my kelpie at age 15. I was his second and final home. He wasn't working out on his sheep farm, and ended up with me in a NYC apartment. It was an adjustment for us both in the beginning, but plenty of time spent together doing different things and lots of hiking kept him happy, and he was the best part of my life for 12 years until he passed. He's left a hole in my heart and an emptiness in my home. I'll never have a better dog and I'll never forget him.
When you say headstrong do you mean stubborn? We have just adopted a rescue pup and I'm now realizing she's probably a black kelpie. She's super stubborn to try to train
@@amandasnider2644 yes they can be very stubborn, just need to keep at them with consistency I think it's the reason some ppl find them difficult, just takes a bit of time and work Once trained they're very obedient and responsive to command Enjoy your puppy❤️
@@amandasnider2644 yes they are stubborn, but what you need to realise is that part of that stubborness is a test of pack leadership. I once stood in a park 2 metres from my Smithfield Kelpie Jess, telling her to come. She was always walked off leash, it was over an hour before she finally relented and came. But from that moment on i was always the Boss. I walked her before work for an hour and after work for 1.5 hours every day. She and my Husky Kelpie cross were famous down the Diamond Creek trail! Kelpies are super smart, but you have to challenge them constantly. Jess swam in surf with me, swam river rapids with me, climbed waterfalls with me, we had a lot of adventures. You need to always bear in mind that Kelpies are the best working dog in the world, boundless energy, very strong willed and very smart, they have Dingo in them. You will always need to adapt yourself and your environment to your best friend, not the other way around. Please stick with it, you will be rewarded 100 fold! Lots of greta times to you both
@@markhill9275 There's no other choice then sticking with it. Even if she's stubborn I'm much too in love then to ever consider giving her up. She's my silly girl!
My Shadow, "Shadito", was found under the table in a Mexican restaurant, having a very good time with a burrito at 6 mo old. He was so smart! He had to powerwalk with me too! He would be tired after 5 miles, then ready to go again after 5 minutes!
i own GRACIE a 4yo kelpie x collie as well. They are unbelievable, she will jump over chairs and fetch and play all day long. My life will fall down around me if anything ever happens to her. I dare anyone to find a better breed.
My dog is a kelpie/pitbull mix that I rescued. It was really sad bc the rescue (although knowing full well that he was a pittie mix as both mom- who gave birth in the rescue- was an Australian Kelpie- and dad -who was a pit bull- were both rescued at the same time) labeled my dog as a kelpie/lab mix, bc they were worried that he'd never get adopted if ppl knew he was of pit bull descent. We knew right away that he was a pit bull mix though bc Finley, our boy, had the typical "blue" color of the pit bull family. Now he's blue/brindle colored. He's the bestest dog with the great traits of both. He's long and muscular, with a long snout and pointy ears that stand straight up and tuck back to disappear as well. He has the pit bull white bibbing also. I swear he also looks part greyhound, but now after watching this, I can see where he gets his slim body and muscular form! He's also super sweet, highly energized and boy if he didn't get his daily exercise as a pup, he would tear up everything! He also thinks he's a lap dog and loves to fall asleep in my arms. Such a sweet boy, my Finley is!
Over a period of 26 years we've had 9 rescue dogs, often 3 at a time, one was a kelpie, never knew that it was at first. The kelpie, Zak was the most amazing dog of them all, so easy to train, so obedient. He was friendly to all other animals, everybody loved him, how was it I had never learned about this breed earlier? It is difficult to convey to other who didn't know him, how clever and loving he was. It took him no time to learn new commands and it was a pleasure to take him for walks off the lead. One day we had taken him to a very busy place, loads of other dogs, loads of people and the occasional cars. Zak was always off the lead if appropriate, this day he was about 75 metres ahead of us as usual and a car appeared on the track, I called to Zak to sit, and he did just that as usual. He stayed in the sitting position util we got to him, all the while people and dogs running around. At this point we had had Zak for about 6 months, when we got to him he stood up and people were so amazed that he had stayed in the sitting position till we arrived. Some one commented that it must have taken some serious training to get him stay put with all the stuff going on around him. I nodded and just said he was a good boy, people wondered what breed he was, Kelpie I told them. As new walked on with friends who didn't really know Zak, they asked how much work had it been to get him to stay put like that, I just had to admit that we had done nothing to get him to do that, he just did it of his own accord. There were so many things like that with Zak, truly a 'dog in a million', springs to mind. He never bit or growled at anyone, just was so friendly to all other dogs etc. He used to go running with my wife on her training runs for years, such a great companion, it was such a tragic loss when he just keeled over and died when he was about 10.5 years old, such a loss to both of us. I just cannot imagine another dog being so amazing as our Zak, of course there must be loads of great dogs out there, just never seen another!!!
I myself hv a kelpie an she looks just like one in pictures on here.she is very loyal to me and protects me from harm.ive had her since birth.i love ❤️❤️ my Daisy
Our Kelpie loved the video. She also loves TV. Of curse like all smart dogs she wants to be challenged and play. So this is a must. They area great breed. We have owned at least 3 dogs with Kelpie blood over our lifetime. You need to watch the Red Dog movie to understand and enjoy what a Kelpie is.
Seeing a lot of love for the Kelpies here. Good people. Sit. Wait... Waaaait. Good people. Here's your treat. There's a movie called Red Dog. If you love Kelpies, watch it, laugh and cry for Red Dog, the (mostly) true story of the greatest Kelpie the world has ever known.
My son has a kelpie that comes and stays with us and although full of energy and very intelligent, we have ball and frisbee play every day and let him run every day with alternating walks and he is content and as Michael Vasta stated, he is happy to lie on the couch with you at night and watch a movie. He knows when he is off watch and soon as the sun is down so is he...chilling.
Help! We just adopted a 3 1/3 year old Kelpie. His name is Bear but we didn’t name him. We would have thought of something more fitting like we did with out heeler who passed several months ago. We were told he’s at least part heeler and he’s not. He’s definitely a Kelpie. My son scanned him with some sort of AI thing and thats how we figured it out. He’s been abused…adopted and kept in a crate for 10 hours a day and then was forced to wear a shock collar because the neighbors were complaining that he barked the entire 10 hours. That was over a year of his life. Then he was surrendered again…adopted again..and once again kept in a crate the entire day. He was surrendered again and after 8 months at the shelter, they were getting ready to euthanize him for quality of life measures because he suffered such horrible anxiety. We’ve had him for 3 months now and he will never be crated or surrendered again. We have a large yard but he’s an inside dog. Me and my husband are both in our 50’s and I’m home all day with him. My husband is home until 2 when he leaves for work. But until 2…he has him outside running and catching ball. He wouldn’t even walk outside when we got him. He’s scared to death of the world. We weaned him off of one of his anxiety meds but he’s still on Zoloft for now. We will eventually wean him off that too. Does anyone out there have any ideas as to how to make him less afraid of being outside? We want him to hike with us but he’s just too miserable and shakes all over. I don’t think it’s the leash and we already have him trained to our yard and he’s completely leash free at home. We’ve not left him alone yet and don’t really see a need to barring one of us getting sick or something and having to be at the hospital. But even then he’s getting to know our grown kids so they can help in those situations. Before we got him we made sure that they would all 3 make sure he stayed with one of them if something happened to me and my husband together…we’re serious about him never going back to a shelter or being crated again. I’ve cussed his former owners so many times now for what they did to this beautiful, smart, sweet dog. Any ideas on what we can do to help with his anxiety would be greatly appreciated. We think the Zoloft zaps his energy because when it kicks in, he’s ready to be a lazy bum the rest of the day…so, we don’t give it to him until my husband leaves for work and the running around is done. I take him out too, but my husband is more able to go wide open with him. Thanks!
Aussie here. I think maybe just take him for short slow walks on a lead. he can sniff and do dog things. as he gets used to going out more take him for longer walks. after a while he will get used to it and enjoy it.
I had a kelp once her name was sally best dog the family ever owned when she passed on she was cremated & her ashes are with our vet who looked after her !!! Rip
Our kelpie had 3 long walks a day (including chasing the ball) and was extremely people-centric. He tolerated other dogs but adored attention from ANYONE. Bos had hip displasia so we only had him 10 years but it was magical.
First Fact! You absolutely got the name WRONG! It is Kelpie, not Australian Kelpie. There never has, never will be any other "type" of Kelpie. Just simply Kelpie.
I just got a 9 month old kelpie. She was supposed to be a cattle dog but failed out. Shes the most well mannered dog I've ever met. Super lazy until I get her Frisbee out.
I love my kelpie (Buster) he's well trained so we don't experience any of the problems BUT, I can't express how hard it it to flea them at times because their coats are so damn waterproof
Apparently 4% Dingo. I petted (in a zoo) a purebred (?) dingo pup, the legs/paws on some of the Kelpie are very much like that of the dingo pup that I met. However, the average person is not allowed to have a dog with too much dingo % apparently. The reason I assume is because of their reputation ???
This is probably the most accurate video I've watched about kelpies. That being said every dog is different, my girl absolutely loves my son to the point where I can't rough house too much with him or she'll let me have it haha. She loves all people but especially kids.
Kelpies originated from the Kelpie estate in Scotland, where you can find the dog we recognise. There are some very good shampoos on the market that won't strip oils from their coat. Shampooing can be a therapeutic activity, and keeps away parasites. Bones as part of a raw diet keeps their teeth clean, and gives them some more mental stimulation. The impact of 1080 baiting on dingo populations is variable, ranging between 22 and 100%
No, they were pups from a bitch named Kelpie, from central NSW. All the farmers wanted " one of Kelpie's" (pups), and that became the breed name. It is said that there is dingo DNA in them.
I have a 2 year old kelpie. She is most energetic & Playful then my Bloodhound mix, when she sees me with a ball in my hands, she would wait till I throw it and she'll start to chase it. She's also spoiled and prefers to eat Meat (cooked and raw) rather than kibble. When I first got her I thought she was a German Shepherd until I saw a video on RU-vid that talks about Kelpies, she's the best dog and I love her. Edit: I forgot to say that 2 farmers were giving away puppies on the side of the road. :)
My ex-girlfriend brought a puppy home 9 years ago and he is the best dog I ever had. He is so sensitive and emotional it is almost like he is a person. He can run all day or lay in bed and cuddle. I always thought he was a mutt. I thought he maybe was German Sheppard and another dog but I have come to find out he is a Kelpie. I always called him a Dingo joking and he actually has Dingo blood in him. I can say if you get the chance to have one of these dogs make sure you do.
What a load of horse shit, I live in the hills in Sydney and heaps of people around me own kelpies with no issues at all, they make perfect family pets with plenty of attention and exercise
@@shawsie5780 True, it is horse shit. Kelpies make wonderful pets, Heelers too. My Mum's two heelers were beautifully calm and obedient, but then they did have cows to play with. Working cattle seemed to give them much more joy than us ever petting them.
