I actually think Tomic showed some real promise here back in 2012. Its sad to see he didnt build on the level he showed as a youngster... I know he cops a lot on social media and said a few silly things publicly, but he did have a lot of talent.. Just a pity he didnt seem to fully apply himself to his tennis...
His dad was a complete lunatic for one, it's hard to succeed when you have someone like that to come home to. I'm not excusing Bernard's behavior at all but a lot of people don't realize how messed up his childhood would have been.
I think although Federer's best moment is from 2004 to 2007. I also think that his game has never looked as elegant as in 2011-2012, especially in this last year. Federer makes up for the loss of explosiveness, speed and power through genius and creativity (increased use of drop shots and cool resources). Despite everything, he still has a devastating forehand and a beautiful backhand (although more irregular than in recent years). The fact that I had to deal with those years with the best Djokovic and a Nadal at a very high level for me still adds aesthetic value to this stage. It is like seeing that old lion, still majestic and imposing, give up his throne to the new aspirants, not without making it clear who the king is.
I love Tomic's facial expressions. He's all "wow, I would really be enjoying this if I was a spectator instead of the guy getting his ass handed to him."
@Ryo Shusukei agree he had his weak moments in the last years due to a lack of motivation but if you take a look at this year you can see that he his climbing again. for example he won in chengdu against fognini in the final
+Youssef Arafat That for me is one of the best points to illustrate Federer's genius. There are few players who would even think about that shot, let alone execute it! Wow!
+Tom Bowers I consider this the most underrated Federer shot ever; nobody ever includes it in their compilation videos! I know there are quite a lot of shots to choose from but this one should be in his top 10, I think.
One of the things that I noticed about Tomic is that his racket acceleration is so slow compared to everyone. Because he's rather tall and strong naturally, it's hard to see it from the ball speed. If you look at his style of hitting, he is kinda pushing the ball around.
+Lulu Jones I don't think he should aim to hit harder. I think his current style is fine. It's a game-changer; a weapon: different from the typical trend we see in top tennis players nowadays with their speed and strength. Though Federer's in his own arena...
The problem with his current style is that yes, it is smart and tactical, but if were to combine more speed and power, he would really be a great player.
Federer played so much more magical with the traditional style 90 square inch racket. Control and feel we're unprecedented. The modern racket kept him in the game by solving his power issue and countered his opponents relentless attacks on his backhand, but his control and feel are only a shadow of his former glory.
@@byrne8509Honestly it shouldn't but if you check his matches after 2018 there have been plenty. Maybe he got some bad balls or was slower on the shot. He gas great hands though so might've been surprised by the bounce
When this match was played: -8 years since his first AO title -8 years since he first became #1 -8 and a half years since first Grand slam title - 16 gs at that time, with no gs in 2011 and people used to say “he is still here”. 2020: 20 Grand slam titles 100+ titles “Still there”
It's awesome and unorthodox. If you give him slow balls with spin or high balls, he SMACKS them back down into the court FLAT. Very tough to play against.
Grant I agree with you and the same comment could be made about his friend Kyrios .I think they were spoilt by earning far too much money early in their tennis career .
Renji Chan I think coaches hate it when you run around to hit forehands tbh. Throws off your court position, but if you’re forehand is that good then you do it
very slow aus open. and this is where nole shines the most. slow court = Novak's excellence. clay court = no brainer in Nadal grass court = the GOAT himself Roger
Federer the tactician. Masterclass in tactics. You can tell he is just way higher tennis iq than tomic. Clean ground strokes can only get you so far and Tomic learned that the hard way during this match.
Strange specimen this Bernard Tomic and I am not referring to his antics nor motivation (lack thereof). He is in a sense very talented and "skilled" but then again his techniques suck big time. They are fundamentally flawed, especially this is obvious looking at his forehand which he just hits with his arm; serve is also in the same subpar family of lazy shit strokes. And all the rest by implication. A bit like Mannarino who has never cared to learn a proper forehand (Fognini is also lazy but probably not this deeply flawed in fundamentals.)
I agree but look where it took tomic and mannarino , it can’t be THAT flawed, rather different and not as proper. Fognini has compact strokes and is really talented with his wrists...don’t see fundamental flaws it’s just not everyday u see someone with wrist work like his.
@@collinnguyen4523 Yeah, I know. Fognini is not that flawed. He is lazy though. Yet Tomic would be better off had he a better ”grip” of swing fundamentals, notwithstanding his antics/lack of motivation. And Mannarino would also be simply a better tennis player and higher in the ATP rankings if he had a solid forehand anchored in correct swing dynamics from the gound up.
Federer makes these winners look so easy. Did Tomic just stop trying after the first set or did he just run out of gas? The last half of the highlights was quite boring on Tomic's side
Slowest was 2009/2010. But at least from 2008 to 2013 the quality of rallies was great, now It's just serve and volley or serve and 1/2 punches, so boring
@@gowrishankar9096 self-destructive behaviour, his father is the real evil. link to an interesting analysis on tomic's career and downfall : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZnmstQH9Hto.html
Saw a news documentary on Tomic that when he made a million, he went full playboy and brushed tennis aside and said it was just a job to make money..Looks like his father pressure and expectations screwed him up..
Tomic was good....he had just beaten Marty Fish at DElray Beach when Fish got to the top ten.....that' just show how Fed /and the other three/ was way ahead of the field
6:31, the commentators clearly don't understand what Tomic was feeling. He's obviously irritated that Federer was playing that drop shot several times. It was pretty apparent that Federer wanted that match over with quickly. Honestly, I don't think Tomic will break Top 10 anymore with his inability to give 110% each game. Definitely my opinion though.
I'm not making excuses for anyone. I've never liked Tomic, either his gameplay or general attitude. But when you're analyzing whether someone would break Top-10, you have to be objective. I was mainly talking from Fed's point-of-view and getting through the match quickly. From my own experience, I always root for Tomic's opposing players. There's just something about him I don't like. But I agree that Tomic has low power when compared with other players. Lacks versatility too.
sextc89 I totally disagree with you. You don't need to hit hard to win. If you have control and know how to manipulate your opponent you can win. If you don't know that you haven't played long enough.
He just suffers from pressure from the Australian press. Every country is desperately seeking a new star, and as soon as they see someone successful in the juniors they jump on the bandwagon. Same thing happened with Donald Young here in the States. It happened with Gasquet and Monfils as well in France, but they were actually much better players and were able to crack the top 10 for a while.
I want to see Roger vs Novak in the finals. Roger definitely has the tougher path having Tsonga-Delpo/Murray- in his side of the draw. While Novak has Berdy-Ferrer.
towards the end of the second set tomic just realized it was going to end well and just said "fuck dis imma gist gonna git some jhookers and blow, im outta here"
Tomic said he wasn t sure Fed would stay until R3: But I m not sure tomic is a legend of tennis. And Above all, wilander has a Fed-complex. He still doesn t get that Federer has more records than him, lol. Each time he is like oh i m sure this guy will beat Fed and when Fed win the tournament, "oh i was sure he could do it". Hypocrit
Why does this video say content from 10? Every Aussie tennis fan knows the Aus Open is on 7 not 10 :S. Plus you can tell from the Euro thing in the top right this isn't either rofl.
What's with all the anti-Tomic sentiment? Tomic even said before this match that it was going to be tough and that he was just going to go out and play his best.
Mate, they weren't. No one in their right minds would've said that. I'm an Aussie and I was going for Fed, but no one thought Tomic was going to beat him
beautiful match with high quality shot. Tomic is a good player. But Federer is too good. Tomic might have a chance if he played with Nole or Nadal, the base-line defensive style player.
