Farewell H type cars. As VLocity railcar sets replace locomotive hauled commuter trains departing Melbourne, we see the passing parade at Geelong around 18.00 on Friday 19 January 2024. On 2 February, the last H type carriages were to be replaced altogether, but did receive a slight reprieve. We see Y129 shunt a H set for stabling. These had colourful history. Built in the 1950s as suburban electric cars, they were withdrawn prematurely, due to their asbestos insulation content. They were rebuilt as interurban loco hauled stock or buried wrapped in plastic in the Talbot Quarry, during the 1990s.
