Australian sailor and dog rescued after months lost at sea

An Australian sailor and his dog have been rescued off the coast of Mexico after surviving on nothing but rainwater and raw fish for two months while lost at sea.
Tim Shaddock set out for French Polynesia from Mexico in April, but his catamaran was badly damaged by a storm just a month into the voyage.
The 51-year-old and his dog Bella survived under a small canopy aboard the battered vessel for weeks, before they were spotted on Thursday by a helicopter that was on the lookout for tuna for a fishing vessel.

This is a miracle! Not only did he survive, but the doggie too. The dog was a stray and had kept by him so he adopted it some time before his trip. I think that was a gift from God for him not to lose his mind while alone in the ocean.

Bella chose this man to be his loyal companion and oh boy did she live up to that promise. The way he said he’s so lucky to have Bella and he’s so glad she survived proved that his main concern was for her survival. This is one of the best true story movies when Netflix give him a 10 million dollar deal. Well done Sir and Miss Bella 🐶

Yeah and that crew gets paid by the number of fish they catch. And the employer loses money every time they stop fishing. That means the company and the crew both sacrificed financially to stop and tend to this man and accommodate the 2 survivors. I’m hoping they benefit from the publicity.

A big shout out to the company that went out of their way to save this man’s life, it’s not cheap to rescue someone so far out. The person who was saved seems like a good man, he did a great job surviving for so long adrift.

@@angelapietras1235 I'm pretty sure that's because he's back in Mexico but will be going back to Australia and it's very expensive to transport a dog between countries plus he's obviously not gonna try to do it by boat again. The dog found a new good home it sounds like, he said he made sure they promised to treat her good.

I was rescued in July last year. Actually. A year ago tomorrow. Myself and my skipper. Storm damaged boat. Force 10 storm. Rescued by a Greek oil tanker about 80-90 miles off the coast of Portugal. We can’t thank the crew enough for having a hand in making sure we are here today. Congratulations to Tim for making it back onto land.

To everyone worrying about Bella, try not to judge to Mr. Shaddock too harshly, he may have his reasons for giving her to one of the crew. She wasn’t his dog to begin with, she adopted him remember. Maybe she was just sent to keep him alive during this journey at sea and now she’s got someone new to save. Something tells me she will be cherished because she’s a rockstar now. 😉

Yes Bella is a star. Simply this Man has a good open relationship to animals as he has one to nature and people of the sea. This does not mean that he does not love her. This means that he has not this emotional strong bond some of us feel (I do); he probably made a choice to better care for her. That is he couldn't take her to Australia.. Animals live in the present, can forget the past, and she will keep on having a good life.

This guy has the patience of a saint. All these incompetent journalists asking the same questions over and over and he just takes it in stride. Even the video of him first being rescued, he seems happy to answer questions before even getting a drink of water. I'm glad Bella found him before he left shore; she likely gave him strength to keep going. It's crazy that he and she had only recently met. Dog=life.
