I believe it's a silhouette formula. While the cars look like Alfas etc they aren't really. Look at the front of the Alfa for instance. I'm fairly sure most are powered by bit block Chevys. The Sports Sedan series has been running for a very long time.

. . . and while the ubiquitous Chev continues to rack up win after win after win, the little children bolt turbos the size of houses on Barras that win nothing in the real world. The pushrod Chev V8 is 1930s technology released to the public in 1955 & it still reigns suppreme even when heavily outnumbered & totally surrounded by theoretically superior overhead cam engines. The Chev just keeps on delivering while all attempts to overwhelm it fall by the wayside. I really don't understand how that works, but it certainly does work. There's just something magical about that basic 1955 Chev engine layout that refuses to be beaten. The little Chev is just a mechanical miracle.

@@johnbrooks9523 Yes but it's boring and makes a joke of the class. There are other engines that will out perform LS's reliably but typically everyone copies each other. There are several suitable Mercedes race engines and as for turbo's, you missed that Sherriff Nissan putting out 1,100 hp and lapping Mt Panorama reliably, so fast that it got banned. Too many cheap arse engine builders and owners who can't go past anything more complicated than push rods.

@@johnbrooks9523 Cars with DOHC engines have a weight penalty. Engines are based on production engines, but NASCAR engines are also allowed. The top cars probably have NASCAR engines. The capacity limit is 6L, and turbos have an equivalency factor of 1.7, so a turbo engine can be no bigger than 3.529L. So the Barra is too big.

It is fascinating that ye old tried n true pushrod v8 still kicks arse. Having a weight penalty for DOHC engines makes it challenging though. I'd love to see a VK-56 in one of these front runners. Keen to see the big boys face off against the 3 fast rotors at SMSP. That'll be epic.

So? It's not a boring production based series.
