As a Hong Konger I'm really happy that you tried our snacks! Your Cantonese sounds great actually! Here are some more info/comments on the snacks you ate: 00:58 The cheesey rings - It's a really cheap snack back in the days in our school days. I believe most schools are selling these so it's our childhood memories. 02:41 The pickled orange peels - It's one of those really traditional snack that originated a long time ago. The elders say these are good for your throats and there are stories that some singers actually eat them before their shows to brighten up their vocals. 03:41 The QQ gummies - Also it's a really cheap snack back in the days - But the most iconic thing of this is the advertisement for this gummy. I believe like 80% of the Hong Kongers would remember the tag line! LOL 04:40 The BBQ chips - That was one of my favorite ones when I was small. My family kept me from eating them since they always said it has a lot of MSG and it's not good for my health. 06:56 The ring candy - I think this enters the school shops later than a lot of the other snacks but still one of the classical ones. I remember there are ones that are more clear and colorful - The strawberry one is clear pink and looks amazing 08:39 The sugar biscuit - Actually there is a medicine for the kids to take if they suffer from tapeworms and it's basically this biscuit but with the medicine blended with the icing of top of that. What you are having is kinda like the the same thing but without the medicine. 09:57 The chocolate fingers - This is actually quite iconic because some kids back in the days like to eat them like how the adults smoke a cigarette. And in fact some people who are trying to cut off smoking ate them to just for the sake of having something in their mouth. 11:25 The turtle jelly - The brand of this jelly is one of the largest chain herbal drink shop and why it is shaped like a turtle is because dried turtle shells were used in making that jelly (allegedly). It was supposed to cool off the toxins in your body (allegedly) and they make that into a jelly like snack for gimmick or people who just like the taste of that. 12:35 The hot & spicy chip - That's like the most well known local chip in Hong Kong. I personally grew up with these and now they have potato chips in that flavor as well. 13:23 The rabbit milk candy - These are delicious! They re-branded the candy and there are matcha flavored and red bean flavored now. 14:14 The pickled plum - These plums were usually given free for the customers if you are getting the medicine from the Chinese doctors so you get something sweet to go with the bitter medicine. 15:26 The haw flake - It's small pieces of dried hawthorn mixed with sugar. if you don't like the pickled plum then the Chinese doctors would give you these to go with the medicine. 17:10 The wafer roll - This is actually the closest thing we have to Oreo before we have Oreos in Hong Kong. But I never have these when Oreo is available in Hong Kong. 18:08 The dried fish - Since it's actually quite hard to chew. Back in the days we just put them in mouth and sucking the flavors off the fish when we are having lessons. LOL Thanks again for introducing HK snacks =D I believe there are still quite some that you haven't tasted! See if you wanna have a Round 2 anytime later!
As a HongKonger , I am here to tell you some of them are not actually snacks and we aren't eat them usually 😂😂😂😂 It is making sense if you don't like it . Thank you for making such interesting video!!!❤❤❤
i actually think that both snack or pass and the numbering system are good in their own way. personally, i like the combination of the two, and was kind of waiting for it tbh
Perth sucking on the ring pop like a baby was the funniest thing the whole video😂. How are you supposed to look cool eating one of those as an adult i dont think its possible. Every time i watch these i get a kick out of the expressions he goes through as his mouth and brain and processing what he ate. Its like....do i like it...do i hate it....oooh eyes light up i like it!
The ring pop and the biscuits with the bit of icing on them are things that I also had growing up but I’m from Scotland. I wasn’t aware they they were widespread in other countries as well
Im from Germany and i really love your Videos, i use youre basic Thai videos to learn thai 😊 please never change your self your such a good person . 😊 😊 Sorry for the bad englisch .. im not really good at speaking or writing it 😂 .. Have a good day and a Good week 😊
100% with you for passing most of the snacks and I think you are still being too generous with your scores. I had many of those snacks in my childhood; I don't think I ever really liked them. Now, nothing would induce me to eat them again, not even for nostalgia's sake. Truth be told, most are not exactly made with high-quality ingredients. Take the chocolate fingers as an example: they taste awful because the chocolate quality is subpar. I would say, most of the snacks here have not been popular for a long long time; some are actually kind of hard to find now. If you present these snacks to locals in their 30's or younger, I don't think you will see much interest or excitement because they have grown up primarily with Japanese snacks.
This is like the opposite version of the Italian snack video XD The editing on this is hilarious and it's always fun to watch your expressions when you taste something and then you change your mind about it mid-chew.
These are all childhood snacks! Not necessarily the best but it's the memories. Burger Rings still around for sure. The citrus peel tends to be for people on the road or something . The biscuit W the icing we only eat the icing as a child. Not the biscuit. 龜苓膏guilinggao herbal jelly known as tortoise jelly That transparent paper is white paper on the big rabbit milk lolly Haven't you have haw flakes in Australia? They are very Chinese people's childhood memories
The first ones were one of my favorites as a child in the Middle East. I have forgotten about them till now, but I didn't see them when I visited back in 2018. I would have remembered them if I had seen them. They tasted differently than other cheesy chips, more like a plastic flavor, I guess 🤔
Ohh, hawthorn is actually really nice (tanghulu definitely gets a recommendation :D). Always amused to see how many things have like..regional versions/ things that make you go "oh I know something similar" even when you're from a completely different part of the world. That said, those ring pops are a blast from the past.
Gosh...Perth...most of them is not even Hong Kong brands or the delicious ones!!!! 🥲 you should have tried the snack pack our team prepared for you at KPTSWT in Hong Kong... did the organiser actually passed it to you? 😭 we spent nights discussing the best HK snacks to put in hoping you guys enjoy it... 😮💨😮💨😮💨
I totally feel you. I was grownup in mainland of China and most of the snacks like QQ candy and mandarin skins I ate them when I was young. After I move to Canada, I don’t like local market snacks just feel like the flavors are not my taste. I still buy snacks from Asia market. I guess it’s just cultural difference 😆😆😆
It's a surprise that I found the snack that was so popular back in the 80's in my hometown, Jakarta, is listed as Hongkong snack 😁. It's the tiny biscuits with frosting. It was a staple in every household during the Islamic festive days of Idl Fitr, kids love to eat (only) the frosting. I don't remember seeing it sold in malls nowadays, but saw it in some online stores that sell vintage/childhood snacks. We also have those White Rabbits and Hawthorne flake candies here, they can be found in the Chinatown area in Jakarta. Love a lot the White Rabbit ones but not the flakes 😁
The grape gummies, I'm pretty sure I've had the strawberry flavour and they were really good so I'd recommend maybe trying a different flavour! The cookies with frosting on - we have those in the UK too! We call them iced gems, they're quite a common thing eaten by children at like picnics and birthday parties 😄 We also have chocolate fingers but ours are made by Cadbury's so they are TOP TIER snacking! Most people will happily eat a whole box of them.
JDKFLDJSAFSLFJ I CAN'T WITH PERTH'S FACIALS ESPECIALLY THE CHAN PEI MOEI ONE jkfdjslfdj as a hong konger :) im rlly happy u tried these! i don't know a lot of em since i did not grow up there and im srue the snacks i eat are not only native to hongkong but i still recognised a few :)))) love uuuu
I did an image search of the little black turtles and the description says "Candy Series - Prevents Constipation and Improves The Digestion System". LOL
the super oook reminds me of malaysian snack called super ring 😭 with the cheese and stuff and fun fact, super ring is actually jennie and jisoo from blackpink’s favourite snack!
omg the biscuit with the icing on top is my childhood snack 😂 we used to just eat the frosting which i think called ice gems? and leave the biscuit behind 😂😂😂
OHMYGOD would you happen to be from sg or msia, or somewhere near?? Or somewhere totally not nowhere close to here hahaha, coz I just found out from the comments that they’re pretty widespread and popular in some of the western countries too lol
damn my childhood just got obliterated XD Great vid tho! You should def do a part 2 of HK snacks! There are so many much better snack's out there! Most of the chosen snacks were mainly nostalgic childhood snacks and not necessarily the best tasting HK snacks! Glad you got to try these tho and experience a bit of our culture :)
PLEASE PLEASE TRY SUPER RING (made in Malaysia). Basically the OG of the first snack you tried. And keep in mind that it's not exactly CHEESE tasting. It's the addiction of every single Malaysian (exaggeration but yea)
Omg we have those little biscuits with frosting on them in the UK GOD THAT UNLOCKED A MEMORY i used to see ppl eat them in school! they’re called like icebergs? here i think (don’t quote me on that i don’t remember 😭)
Perth you mentioned about liking spicy but your body not being able to handle it, try drinking some milk and eating some bread with it when you can. It helps neutralize / absorbs some of the acidity in your stomach from the spicy food and might help you tolerate it better. Another thing is when eating spicy food, reduce the amount of salt your using and that'll help as well. Most people think drink water when eating spicy food....that'll land you on the toilet quicker than anything. lol
I didn't know there's a JacknJill snack in Hongkong. JacknJill is a Filipino company so it's surprising. The one Barbecue crackling snack though I don't know if we have that in the Philippines.
