I recently went to visit an Australian Worm Farming expert and asked him to share his top tips for small scale backyard gardeners.
I had a wonderful day as I know that in all forms of gardening and farming you never stop learning.
I have been worm farming for a decade now and started on a small balcony where at the time I grew all my plants in containers.
I wanted to take control of how I grew my food and work on organics and sustainability.
Straight away I got results.
My plants were healthier, more productive, fewer problems with pest, diseases and I was saving money.
My young daughter Karin also devoured all the food I grew, maybe it was because it tasted better.
Ten years on from my first home worm farm and I have never looked back.

Tips: 1. Woodchip compost as bedding, because it deters other animals. 2. Keep your farm wet enough to have water droplets when you squeeze. 3. Keep your tap open if you're doing a stacked bin.

Found you through looking for microgreens when this popped up so ... not quite work farming related but just have to say that I absolutely love the bit of you both talking in the car going downhill with your gorgeous daughter and hearing your blue true Ozzie voices. Also, would love to watch your vids when they come out,,,let me know in a video comment so I can watch. Thanks Marty Ware

I know this video is a little older now but those who have cardboard boxes , rip them up and soak in a bucket of water , layer the pieces of cardboard on top and the worms just love eating cardboard , it’s a covering and food all in one , check the worms in a few days and see how they are going. Doesn’t go rotten and the worm chow it down , just another resource one can use .

3 tires stacked works best. start with two, add organic worm food and worms. after 1.5 mos. take the top tire and move it and it wil become the bottom. stack the next one on top, fill it with food. empty the last one that has all the castings and put it on to[p and fill. and so on and so on. the bottom tire has the castings.
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 5 лет назад
Yes, they work pretty good like that,,,few do escape though into the garden which is okay if you have lots of worms. I teach the enclosed worm farming system for when people first get started,,,then move onto other options such as that into the future.

Most of the plastic ones less than a hundred dollars does the job. They are all much the same. Just make sure it has good airflow,,and strong legs as they can get heavy. That's all I have, can't remember the exact brands now. More surface area helps too! Go for it,,,probably cheaper in the US than Australia. Thanks for the feedback on the videos Alia. Great video, thanks for producing and sharing. I've not heard many folks talk about raising all the worms together though when I bought my "mix" here in the US that's exactly what I heard. My "mix" bin became dominated with blue worms (which I do love) however as the temp in basement (and outside of course) has dropped I've begun to notice more of the others, which I believe to be red wigglers, maybe a few euros. I've planned to separate them into their own bin in an effort to grow their population. Any thoughts, advice, suggestions? Thank you!
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 3 года назад
Hi LP, mine have been mixed from the start and nearly impossible to seperate them now. I actually like watching the different species do well in the seasons. My Euro's did great this winter,,wrigglers coming on again now as it's warming up.

@@martysgarden After this comment I watched another of your videos mentioning how you got a mix of worms from Perma Pete. 😄 Very cool that you have that mix, it really makes sense, I mean they're existing in their own community each with their own positions, sort of. So I'm not against mixing I think the newbie nerd in me just wants more worms. I just dont want to be making a mistake separating them out in the hope I'll get the wigglers to breed faster. 🤗🤗🤗

I'm in WA, just south of Perth. My daughter was given a worm farm from Bunnings. We haven't even opened it-- not knowing if our cold, wet winter this year would be a bad time to start. One thing I wanted to know: I saw a video of a guy pouring worm eggs onto a pile of cow manure. He said they break it down in a matter of weeks. I can't get cow manure, but I can get bags of sheep poo. Would the worms be okay with that, or would I need to pile up the sheep poo and leave it for some amount of time first? I just thought it sounded like a neat idea. The other is where the worm farm should be placed considering our summers are very hot at times? Cheers

I have made 4 worm bins and do get the worm tea from each. It appears that my larger worms have disappeared but can see many small baby like worms. @tonysu8860
@tonysu8860 Год назад
You're not the first one saying your worms escaped. That's unusual, if your worm bin is tight enough, worms aren't escaping they're dying (and decomposing). I'm guessing you're throwing food on top of the worms, and that's killing them. Proper feeding so you don't kill your worms should be in a corner and not covering the surface when the aerobic bacteria will rob all the oxygen and suffocate your worms. Your baby worms may be newly hatched worms that hope to survive.

Those are Hungry Bins...they run $300 USD, a similar product is Urban Worm Bag for about $100 but it shouldn't be kept outdoors because it is fabric.

What do you feed your worms?
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 5 лет назад
Hi Barb, I personally feed my worms a variety of foods. Some foods help lay more eggs. Others produce a high nutrient casting. I have a video coming out in about ten days based on feeding them coffee grounds. Hope you have time watch it when it comes out? have a wonderful day Marty

I've had a worm farm for about three months now it seems to be doing OK. My worms really love water melon and will eat it down to the outer skin. Does anyone know if this is a good food for them.

Bob Jackson Melons are a good food source for worms. I cut them into smaller chunks and the worms absolutely devour them.

Yes, Bob, all fruits are fine. They like the sugars. Sorry for the slow reply. I was on a break for a month.

What happens if you grow in 100% worm castings?
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 5 лет назад
Great question. I actually have a few plants growing in 100% castings,,they are growing great. If you see the black tote bin in the last couple of vids,,that's it.

Hi Kevin, keep an eye out. I will show you again in an upcoming video and may even grow some microgreens in pure castings to show you,,,will be fun. Thanks Marty

how do you keep worms from freezing in the winter?
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 5 лет назад
Give them some coffee grounds,,they heat up as they break down,,also decomposing compost helps as it warms as it decomposes...cover with a wood chip to allow air flow. Hope that helps Marty

I started my second worm bin recently. Strictly small scale 10 gallon bins. The worms are doing well and I'm getting good compost. One thing I don't understand Is the economics of larger scale worm farming. Can anybody give me an idea of how they make money with worms?
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 5 лет назад
Now, that's a whole other story that I am still working out. I hope to move into this area with my compost eventually.
