What a wonderful place to drive. Even I could handle this.. lol!!! Thank you for taking us on your adventures across Europe. I'm enjoying the scenery, the new towns, cities, and even the little villages/hamlets that you pass on your adventure. Thank you for taking the time to videotape, edit, uploading and downloading. It's not easy, but you make it look like it is. Have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year.

Oh, we passed here a few years ago on our way to Lake Garda. First and still only time I've seen Austria.

I like this route. I’ve driven it on the way to Italy. It’s rare that an important transit route isn’t a full motorway yet and that’s what I love about it
@EuropeanRoads
@EuropeanRoads 3 года назад
It's not as much fun when it's hugely congested on the weekends. There is a traffic light at Reutte-Süd which purpose is to create a huge traffic jam stretching into Germany to limit the number of vehicles across the Fernpass.

@@EuropeanRoads I must have been lucky the few times I’ve been, and it was over 10 years ago now.

@@TransportGeekery The worst are winter weekends and some summer weekends, especially since German A7 was completed to the Austrian border 2009, when it became a more viable route for holiday traffic to the Brenner Pass instead of driving all the way east of Munich.

@@EuropeanRoads Yeah, the Autobahn was still being built. We drove through a few small towns and villages on the German side.

I am from the Netherlands and if i go to Italy in the summer, the fernpass is also the fastest route (if there is not too much traffic) It is 40 minutes faster then the motorway.

What software do you use? I just bought a video camera and hope to post from Canada, Just curious what your process is. Nice videos I enjoy the views. Tks

Nice. I hope you and yours had a merry Christmas. Going through the Lermoos Tunnel (starting at 5:57), I noticed the reflectors on the right were reddish while the reflectors on the left were white. Is that what you saw, or just a illusion in the camera?

That´s the austrian way of Tunnel lightning. The reason is: the cars in front of you have red backlights, the cars on the other side have white frontlights. If you think about it for a longer time it makes more sense than the other way around.
@tomsmith5584
@tomsmith5584 3 года назад
@@lane0mator Thanks. It makes sense the way you explain it. In the United States, we would imbed yellow reflectors on the center line, white reflectors on the right and red reflectors on the far left. The red would signify the side you don't use since the only use of red on highway signs is to mark a stop or a prohibition.

@@tomsmith5584 It's kind of the same in Germany where I live, in tunnels red on the left and white on the right side of the road. On rural roads we have some posts on the side of the road with two reflectors on the two sides, white in the right direction, red in the wrong direction. Even though we have an european tunnel safety guideline, the austrian highway tunnels are way safer than the german ones. Most of them have brighter light inside, they have a light dimming when you enter and leave the tunnel so your eye can get used to the brightness inside and outside of the tunnel and if there's an accident or a car inside of a breakdown bay the lights inside the tunnel will blink. In some tunnels they have distance measuring between the vehicles (for example in the Arlberg road tunnel of the S16 -> nearly 15 km long), if its less than 50 m distance the distance sign will light up. They have microphones inside the tunnel to discover unusual sounds like crashing, honking or sharp breaking and they try to establish a second tunnel for all highway tunnels for safety reasons. The second tunnel is from the european tunnel safety guideline, but the other stuff is mostly an austrian thing as far as I know.

It is not an illusion and it is made on purpose to prevent any ambiguity between two-lane roads and dual carriageways.

The drive on Fernpass is very scenic, the pass is quite low, but the mountains around are quite high. However, it is very often congested, in winter and in summer. You had a better weather than I had when I filmed it in august :)

I drove this road by accident in 2011 because I got lost in Germany. I remember people going all suicidal on the Reutte bypass, overtaking on both directions at the same time so that there were 4 cars across at once. Would love to explore the area with more time in my hands to hike somewhere.
