Charles I and his wife Zita of Bourbon Parma were the last Emperor and Empress of Austria and King and Queen of Hungary. Charles ascended to the throne in 1916 in the midst of the first World War after the death of his grand uncle, Franz Joseph. A chain of events made Charles directly in line to the throne: Franz Joseph’s only son and heir: Rudolph committed suicide in 1889. Franz Joseph’s next younger brother Maximilian was already dead at that point. His third brother Karl Ludwig died in 1896, leaving his son Franz Ferdinand directly in line to the throne. As Franz Ferdinand married, as it was declared, morganatically, his children were not eligible to inherit the throne. It therefore became clear that Franz Ferdinand’s younger brother, Archduke Otto most likely would succeed his brother. But Otto died in 1906 aged only 41 leaving his elder son Charles as his heir.

It's funny to think that someone who was Empress during the first world War was still alive in the 1980s

I agree. Her contemporaries would have included the German Kaiser, grandson of Queen Victoria

Empress Zita (well before she was Empress) er Archduchess Zita was the only woman who would receive Duchess Sophie (Archduke Franz Ferdinand's wife) at Court. She was the only one who was kind and acknowledged her, everyone else was told to shun Sophie because she was not born in a Ruling Dynasty but rather "only" a Countess and Lady in Waiting to the Archduchess Marie whom.everyone thought Franz was courting but Marie's mother found Franz gold locket on their tennis court and opened it expecting to find a portrait of her daughter, but she found a portrait of Sophie von Chotek instead. After that she was thrown out and shunned except for Zita who made it a point to befriend her, and invite her to her wedding to Charles and regularly invited Sophie The Duchess of Hohenberg to afternoon tea.

Really, really GREAT video. I learned more about the Hapsburg family than I knew before. I didn't realize so many of them were so long-lived! (Good genes and healthy living, I guess.) The idea that there were members of the Austrian Imperial Family still alive and working in the late 20th and early 21st century blows my mind! Imagine an imperial princess working in Harlem! Thanks for this compilation.

Most people don’t even know that both Charles and Zita are related. Charles’s great grandmother was Queen Maria da Gloria of Portugal and Zita’s grandfather was her uncle Miguel who was king of Portugal until exiled for stealing his niece’s throne. Both direct descendentes of king João VI of Portugal 🇵🇹

When George V and Queen Mary were on a state visit to Vienna before WWI, even the ultraconservative Queen Mary was amazed at how archaic the Austrian court still was in the early 20th century.

The great tragedy was that Karl I was keen to modernise the monarchy and empire (the latter into a sort of commonwealth of semi-independent states which would all have gained full independence over time anyway) - and would have if he had ever had the chance. Instead, he came to the Throne in the middle of a crazy war which he personally detested and tried to end. By the time it was over, the Austrians seemed to have lost faith in the institution which - as noted earlier - was fossilised, out of place in the 20th century and in need of major reform.

An interesting what-if: Had Franz Ferdinand survived the shooting and remarried according to the House Laws, who would have been Emperor?
@mediocremaiden8883
@mediocremaiden8883 Год назад
It would still be Franz Ferdinand. There would have been no Empress though because Franz married morganatically and his 2 sons and daughter would be ineligible to inherit the Throne. After Franz reached old age and natural death, then Charles I and Zita would be Emporer and Empress only they would be much older. Oh you said remarried, Well, Then Franz would ne Emporer and of he married accordingly his 2nd wife would've been Empress. But he was madly in love with his 'Darling Sophie' and boy was she beautiful
@gidzmobug2323
@gidzmobug2323 Год назад
@@mediocremaiden8883 You missed the second part of the question. 🙂. What if he had remarried according to the House Laws? Would any children of the second marriage succeed?
@mediocremaiden8883
@mediocremaiden8883 Год назад
@katherynekoelker2323 Oh sorry Please Forgive Me :) Yes, if he found a 'proper' Habsburg wife then their children (well, if the marriage had produced any sons);would be able to inherit the Austro-Hungarian Throne and his 2nd wife would've been crowned 👑 Empress Edit: And if this second wife had been barren or unable to bear children, then the Throne would've still passed onto his nephew Charles I. However, Charles died in 1922 of influenza. So then Otto, Charles and Zita's firstborn son would've inherited the Throne no matter his age.

I think had Franz Ferdinand and Duchess Sophie survived Sarajevo then when he became Emperor he would have had the laws about morganatic marriages abolished
