I hope this set looks as good in person as it does in this video. I have the "new" variant of it arriving this weekend from house of staunton in natural boxwood and anjan. Mostly the same as these pieces minus a few changes in shape on the rook for example.
Thanks for another interesting video featuring a unique reproduction of a chess set from 19th century Europe. Looks like this set will complement very well your wide selection of chess pieces. I have one observation which may be due to the lighting effect on the pieces, or simply my perception. It seems to me that some of the light pieces (rook, bishop, queen, king ) have a broader base compared to the ebony counterparts. I may be wrong, but you may want to put the bases of the pieces against each other to confirm.

Just got my Tal 1960 championship chess set from royal chess mall. Up till now I've only purchased from House of Staunton. The Royal Chess Mall pieces are good. The design stands out. The finishing however is not at the same level as House of Staunton's. However I find this good as it has a more rustic feel. The Drueke style chess board that came with it is extremely eye catching and beautiful. Again, the finishing isn't the same level as House Of Staunton ( more complicated design). However again, feel more characterful. Will be purchasing from royal chess mall again. The finishing is still more than acceptable. They go for "this is wood, love it". House of Staunton goes for "this is shiny object, love it". I thought I was done but this channel is too good. I'll be looking at this set too:)
The set looks as if the antique color is closer to a yellow hue on the website but seeing the set on your presentation I see the color is rather a warm “tanned” color which is more preferable and pleasing to the eyes. IMHO.
Nice looking set. However I prefer the look of the one sold by Staunton Castle. I like the bee hive tops for the Bishops compared to the acorn shape of your Bishops in that set. The difference between the weight of the woods. Would really drive me nuts. I would prefer Ebonized Boxwood over Ebony. Not only for the weight difference but Ebony has a tendency to crack over time. More so than other woods.
Very interesting observation! The Staunton Castle version also looks nicely made! I think practically the weight difference is not really noticeable during actual play!
Hello. I hope you are well. Question… does this coffee house chess set fit in the coffer box (3.5-4.1”)? The sets king stands at 4.1. Was curious if the fit is too snug. Side note… love your videos. Thanks for sharing. J.G
