Well, God has His own ideas. Let’s see what His Word says!
Acts 2:42-47 is a famous passage that paints 🖌️🎨 a beautiful picture of what the early church looked like. People have spent countless hours poring over these verses and figuring out the secrets to building a good church. But for now, here are three points that Ps Kenneth has brought out for us.
First, a healthy church needs certain fundamental spiritual practices (verse 42). Just as internal organs keep us alive, there are things we need to do to maintain the spiritual life of the church. We need to study God’s teachings so we can know how He wants us to live. 🧠 We need the sacraments of baptism and Holy Communion as visual reminders of God’s grace in the cleansing of our sins through Jesus’s blood. 👁️ And we need to pray because it is how we adore, apologise to, thank, and make requests to God. 💬
Second, a church needs to remain humble and dependent on God (verse 43). When the apostles performed signs and wonders before the people, it would have been easy for the apostles to become arrogant. Today, when our church looks back on its accomplishments, it might be easy to pat ourselves on the back. But ironically, being proud of our own abilities cuts us off from our actual source of power: God. A church is powerless if it shines the spotlight on man rather than God.
Third, a church needs strong fellowship between its members (verses 44-47). Fellowship isn’t just about chatting or hanging out. Fellowship is about recognising our commonality as siblings in Christ Jesus. Fellowship is about selflessly serving the needs of others. Fellowship is about sharing what we have with those who do not have. And fellowship is about doing all these things not out of guilt or obligation, but with a cheerful heart.
When we have all these things, the world 🌎 will see that the church is truly God’s loving family 👨👩👦👦. And His family is always ready to adopt.
