In this video I show you how to make authentic movie theater popcorn. The secret to making movie theater popcorn we enjoy is not so much the popcorn itself, but in the ingredients used to pop it. I think we all agree that many store-bought products claim to replicate that delicious flavor and aroma, but all fall short. When it comes to making movie theater popcorn at home you need only two main ingredients to make your popcorn look, smell and taste like you just got it at your favorite movie theater. Your popcorn will surely impress your family and friends.
Shopping List:
Popcorn popper (skillet, oil or homemade microwave popcorn. This recipe is not made for air poppers or store-bought microwave popcorn.)
1/4 - 1/3 cup good quality popcorn kernels (I'm using Orville Redenbacher)
1 to 1 1/2 tbsp.colored 100% pure coconut popping oil (I'm using Snappy Brand, but there are several good brands available) both in liquid and/or solid form. This is one the key ingredients that gives movie theater popcorn its color and taste. Standard cooking oil will not accomplish this.
1/2-1 tsp Flavacol popcorn seasoning salt. Another key ingredient to movie theater popcorn.
Melted butter or butter flavored oil if desired.
Directions:
For homemade microwave popcorn add the oil, kernels and Flavacol to a small bowl and mix to coat. Then pour into the paper bag, fold the top and pop in the microwave for 4-5 minutes. (Refer to my video link below)
For skillet and pot: add the oil, kernels and Flavacol, cover, shake continuously and pop until you hear very little popping. Tip: if your lid doesn't have vent slots to allow for escaping steam, tilt the lid slightly while popping.
For oil poppers: Add the oil, kernels and Flavacol and pop according to product instructions.
For the Whirley Pop oil popper:
Place the Whirley Pop on the stove burner with the heat off.
Add the popcorn and oil through one of the two hinge lids. Close the lid.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE BUTTER TO POP THE POPCORN. IT WILL SMOKE AND BURN!!!!!
Turn the heat to medium to medium high, depending on your stove. I put mine on level 8.
Immediately start cranking the handle while holding onto the stability handle. Crank speed is not important as long as you are steadily cranking throughout the popping process.
Complete popping is usually achieved just less than 3 minutes. When you hear pops 2-3 seconds apart and feel handle resistance stop cranking and remove from the heat.
Open the lids to allow steam to escape and let stand for 5-10 minutes before eating to prevent sogginess and to assure crunch. (REFER TO MY VIDEO LINK BELOW FOR MORE ON USING THIS POPPER)
Empty into a bowl and drizzle with melted butter or butter flavored oil, if desired, and a touch more Flavacol.
Popcorn Tips:
Make sure your popper has well ventilation for steam to escape; if your popper does not have vent holes or slots in the lid, tilt whatever lid you're using to allow for the steam to escape while popping. Excess steam makes your popcorn chewy and tough. Making sure to empty the popcorn into an open bowl immediately after popping helps to prevent prevent the popcorn being exposed to excess steam.
Prevent over-popping and burning by counting to two as the popping slows. If you don't hear a pop in two seconds it's ready to be removed from the heat.
Use more oil than you think you need. It makes for a super crunchy texture. For example: 1/2 cup kernels to 3-4 tbsp. oil.
Resist eating the popcorn immediately after popping. Letting it rest for a couple of minutes will insure your popcorn is crunchy.
