You're going to love this authentic Thai iced tea recipe (cha yen ชาเย็น), it's easy to make and always refreshing. Get the full recipe here: wp.me/p4a4F7-2kh
Thailand has some very famous drinks, including Red Bull and Singha, but there's nothing more famous throughout the world than Thai iced tea, which is known in Thai better as cha yen (ชาเย็น). The tea is served at Thai restaurants around the world, and many people, especially if they like sweet and creamy beverages, love it. Thai ice tea is often easy to recognize because of its bright orange color and creaminess.
Why wait until you go to a Thai restaurant to have ice tea? Here is an authentic Thai iced tea recipe, Bangkok street food style, that you can make at home right now. There are only a few ingredients that you need, and if you have an Asian supermarket near your home, it should be quite easy to get everything you need. One thing I just want to clarify though is the orange color of Thai iced tea. The tea brand that is commonly used in Thailand is called Cha Dra Muer (ชาตรามือ) - or it's just known as Number One Brand. It's black tea that includes a bit of C yellow number 6, which is what gives it the signature color. However, though I have not tried it, if you just use regular black tea for this Thai iced tea recipe, it should still work fine, it just won't be that orange color.
Anyway, along with black tea, here are the rest of the ingredients you'll need:
1 tablespoon Thai black tea
1 cup of hot boiling water
2 teaspoons sweetened condensed milk
2 teaspoons evaporated milk (plus some more to sprinkle on top)
2 teaspoons sugar
1 cup of crushed ice
The first thing you need to do is steep your tea. There are many ways to do this, but on the streets of Thailand, most Thai iced tea vendors will make their tea using a tea sock, which is almost like a real sock connected to a wire ring. You add the tea leaves to the sock, pour hot water into a cup, and just let the leaves brew for a few minutes. Alternatively, you could just add your tea leave to a cup, pour in the hot water, let the leaves brew for a few minutes, and then strain out the leaves - whatever is easiest for you. Next step is to mix in sweetened condensed milk as well as evaporated milk, and stir it up until it's a nice creamy mixture. You can also add in some extra sugar, according to your own taste. Just to note, since you will be pouring your hot tea over ice, you can make it a little sweeter than you think, as it will become watered down from the ice.
As an extra step, but it is very fun to try, you can put the tea in one cup, and then pour it, using some elevation to another cup. This is going to create some foam on your tea, almost like froth. This is not necessary, it's just fun (see video for details).
The next step in this recipe for Thai iced tea is to take a glass, fill it up to the top with crushed ice, and then pour your milky tea mixture over the ice. Give it a quick stir, and then finish it off with another sprinkle of evaporated milk to give it a nice creamy top. Drink you Thai iced tea with a straw, and if it's a hot day, you'll surely be satisfied and refreshed. Enjoy.

Hey Ying & Mark, When we go out to Malaysian restaurants, I usually get a Teh Tarik or Kopi. It's a nice change from Western tea/coffee. Here in Sydney,we are experiencing our warmest May on record with temps around 26°C, and it's only a week away from Winter. This recipe will come in handy! Stay safe you 2. Jim.

Haha, apparently Yellow 6 is forbidden in Germany. My tea turned out all brownish although I used the same brand you did (the bag looks exactly like yours). At first I thought I had done something wrong but then I checked the back of the bag - no Yellow 6 in there. When I googled it said a lot of food dyes are forbidden in Europe. So I'll have to get used to my tea being brown, I guess. Tastes good, though. Thanks for the recipe.

@@panumatbelle2558 know it’s 3 years late, and you may be sarcastic, but I’m just gonna explain it in case you don’t know: Basically it’s a artificial food coloring made from petroleum. It’s used in variety of foods like cereals, and drinks such as Thai Tea, and even medication. However it being artificial, it has side effects like ADHD-like behavior in children, mild poisoning, and even in some cases brain damage, though I do have a hard time believing that one.

Great! Drink it in Chiang Mai! The Bab, a Central Figure of the Baha'i Faith, had a delicious recipe for white tea with minimal processing and low oxidation. "Drink a cup of water in which the white leaf from China has been boiled, for drinking it refines the constitution, draws out moisture, and closes the paths of allusions." He also added frankincense and cloves with an equal amount of pure sugar.

Not true. Thai Tea is made from Ceylon tea. While it is made from the same plant as black and green teas, it has a very distinctive taste. I've tried making Thai tea with English breakfast, and it was awful. Assam didn't taste right either, then I tried ceylon, and it was perfect. It's a lighter, more complicated flavor. You should be able to find ceylon locally.

So, if this turns out DELICIOUS , I will be sayin' "Good bye!" to $3 ones! Another pricey drink are these "strawberry lemonades" at restaurants. I bought one for $4 one day. The next day, my daughter found a sale on a cans of Arizona Tea for $0.50. To be sweet, she bought me the strawberry lemonade. It was DELISH! So now I stock up when on sale. If in season, I'll put 3 THIN slices of fresh strawberry on a [skinny] fancy glass, and serve to friends! (And that's how you "do" limited income! LOL!)

I’ve tried this method, do adjust to your taste and sugar level. This simple recipe is perfect and the taste is the same if not better than those served at Thai restaurants ! Thanks so much !

Do the Thai folks make an Authentic Tea that I can buy to make Thai Iced Tea without the C-YELLOW food coloring? I believe I heard that the C- YELLOW Food Color is Cancer Causing !

Can I make this thing with normal black tea leaves(I haven't seen thai tea in my country) and Heavy Cream(substitute of evaporated milk)?

When I was in Thailand, my Thai girlfriend and I could not get the same taste as those on the street for the life of us. Can you please tell me how much water to use and how much tea to use. To say a heaping spoonful is vague. Can you be more specific? Thanks

Looks excatly like teh tarik. Especially the place where you pour the water from one cup to another we called it "tarik" (pull).

I used the same items as you and my Thai tea is coming out a light pink/orange rather than the nice orange the Thai tea is suppose to be originally. But of course, I just seeped the tea leaves at the bottom of a cup and poured hot water in.. and didn’t use the tea sock. Could that be the problem? Am I not leaving the tea to seep in for as long as it should be? Lmk please.
