I have read Ain't Burned All The Bright many times, and I cry every time I do. I'm so happy to see a profile of Jason Reynolds (and the artist, Jason, too!), and to observe how he impacts the world on a daily basis just by being who he is. His mother must be so proud, and rightly so.

I meet so many people from different walks of life, and they often tell me their unique and sometimes personal stories from time to time. There are certain words and phrases I usually say to them, and most people found it very moving and helpful towards them. I remember meeting a young woman, Cheryl, who was going through her life battling cancer, and I told her my experiences of learning about a friend/neighbor of mine, Lisa, who sadly passed away from dealing with ALS. She immediately burst into tears (I’ve seen a few that have done that), after I said such helpful and inspirational phrases for her, and I only met her for just 5 minutes, too. Ever since, we’ve been loyal friends, just because of how we were able to share a certain connection upon dealing with people going through a rough life, with a certain illness.

What he said at the end, about the kid. “Why should it bother me?”. This is why most media from white people, was represented by- white people-, because they too also had the same experiences of being or seeing their life through white-people experience. And that should be normal to whomever tells their story. It’s not about eschewing people of other colors or races, it’s about representing and talking about what they know. But sadly that has been misconstrued as racism. What should have happened since always, is the telling of stories (through any artform) by all races, and not limited to only one. At least in the US. Everyone and all stories are beautiful and matter!

You've just watched seven minutes of SUCH a shining light in this world, and yet, you chose to focus on something YOU feel uncomfortable with. His hair is spectacular. And my guess is, most of the kids he's reaching are drawn to his aura and charisma, as well as his 'look' -- which certainly includes his gorgeous hair. Thank you for reminding me to focus on the good stuff and to leave the rest out of the equation. Life is too precious and short for us to be wasting our energy on anything else.

You missed the point. Ever heard of the saying “write what you know?” He never said there aren’t poor white people. He writes based on his prospective and viewpoint from growing up in an all black community. It is up to the reader to interpret that experience to there own.
@ashleelewis9151
@ashleelewis9151 Год назад
That’s literally not what he said. Also, do you have any idea how many thousands of books are published that center the experiences of white children? Nothing wrong with books that don’t, and Reynolds explicitly said that his books are for all kids.

- that is literally the history of publication. Old radio programs were sponsored by products like soap and cigarettes. Early late night shows highlighted artists THEIR stations had on TV. That's what all these companies do. Rupert Murdock and Fox more than anyone. At least CBS let's you know what they are doing.

Seems as though he's a nice guy. But there is still no reason to read his books if you are a typical male student who doesn't like to read. What is the benefit of investing all that time and effort to slag through one of his books? Is there anything in his books that I can improve "my" life immediately after setting the book down? Sorry, but pleasure reading is a total waste of time for 80% of male student population.

I teach in a school where the majority of my students are minorities. They are much quicker to pick up one of Reynolds' books than they are to pick up say Roald Dahl's because the cover and characters are more relatable. The Hatchet generation is dwindling and the Kwame Alexander, Jason Reynolds, and Renee Watson generation is growing.
