www.cbc.ca/Q Margaret Atwood puts on a clinic on the true nature of "SF" or "speculative fiction" as she discusses her latest book, "In Other Worlds: SF and the Human Imagination" in Studio Q.
I concur. Jian is too in love with the sound of his voice. Ms. Atwood spanked him good and he was not even aware of the paddling. I thought he ended the interview rudely by pointing out that she was flustered.
"You don't want to go into the footnotes of this..." Is spot on! The interviewer is out of his league, and unable to approach the subject with the depth that MA is speaking from.
I always love these interviews. There uniquein the way that the questions always throw the artist. Best! Thanks to Studio Q. I'm looking forward to the 3rd installment of Oryx and Crake...
I don't like the interviewer at all, he is unnecessarily combative and aggressive at times. He attempts to trip her up or showcase himself and she slaps him down with her intelligence and forceful, calmness. He did redeem himself a bit towards the end...
my god Jian! you go on and on and on about this term SF for goodness sake take about the BOOK. I'm surprised Margaret didn't smack you with her scarf. She danced circles around you and she was kind with you considering. It's interesting how she tried to teach you. Good for you Margaret!!!!
All the methods mentioned by lambda66 will work - especially visiting our website - and you can also subscribe to our videopodcast on iTunes. All of the interviews that get posted on RU-vid are posted there as well.
Here is the thing, there was an interview with this writer/poet done in Berkley university and she told the crowed that she could walk into Fairmont royal york hotel and put a lighter to the fire alarm too set off the sprinklers and then write numerous pages about each person leaving there ardrone or hotel room. Which gives an eventual truth of her cognition
Oye ~ ! It's simple! "Speculative Fiction" is about stuff that could happen, stuff that is a step or two away from what is now happening. The term is not difficult to get one's head around! So call Atwood's work "Speculative Fiction" and get on with things!
Here is the thing, there was an interview with this writer/poet conducted in berkley university and she told the crowed convocation that she could walk into the Fairmont royal york hotel and put a lighter to the fire alarm too set off the sprinklers and then write numerous pages about each person leaving there ardron or hotel room .Which gives an eventual truth of her cognition and the non elusiveness of every day.
True. I was thinking the same thing. She is like the intelligent but moody old grandaunt we have over for lunch. You love them but you can't get through to them.
You are disrespectful . Why on earth do you argue with the likes of this illustrious woman, who in the hell do you think you are. Where was your mother when you were educated? Obviously, if you did have an education, it didn’t stick. You, are why a lot of women dislike men like you. You can’t hold a candle to this wonderful author or her educational level. She was very kind under the circumstances, shame on you.
I could easily mute the interviewer and follow Margaret Atwood's answers to every question asked without hearing him asking questions or his rude interjections. Also, the use of the word 'provocateur' in the title of this video, it's implying something that the interviewer or the whomever that titled it understands the deeper meaning of the word, provocateur.
I have never lliked the interviewer, Jian Gomessy, his arrogant attitude, his inferior intellect and protracted , over long, questioning. My suspiciouns on his character were confirmed when he was tried and convicted of sexual assault in Toronto. Margaret Atwood was wonderful.
Atwood seems like an incredibly hard person to interview. She sidetracks questions, picks on phrasings and word choice, and is constantly going into anecdotes. One learns a huge amount, but never hears a proper answer to the question.
