Fire crew were called to Nitro Gym at 151 Princes Highway on Hallam shortly after 4 a.m., by a passer-by who saw a large orange glow and smoke emanating from inside the building.
Six fire brigade pumpers, a ladder platform, and 28 firefighters were dispatched to control the blaze, which was declared under control by 4:57 a.m.
Fire Rescue Victoria reported that the building was "well alight" upon their arrival, necessitating the use of additional pumper trucks to manage the fire. The blaze shattered multiple windows, smashed the front doors, and caused significant interior damage.
However, it is also being said that the perpetrators first broke through the glass doors, entered the building, and then poured an accelerant to ignite the fire. This deliberate act of arson suggests a calculated effort to cause maximum damage.
