Thankyou Tom for raising awareness of how those autistic traits cause issues - inability to read social cues, hypersensitivities and obsessive interests. Further it is fantastic that you have chosen to take action and do something about it.

This is important on many levels, but what is equally important is to recognise that autism in girls and women also exists. I do wonder whether there aren't more cases of non-male autistics (whether trans or not) who have also been judged unfairly on a set of behavioural characteristics that they also cannot control.

Thanks Tom. Highlights a great injustice. In general the public do not identify or understand the nuances of autistic folk. How is a jury of their "peers" meant to determine incidence or guilt without prejudice. If a highly covered media criminal case needs to adjudicated by a judge, ie the Lloyd Rayney case, then surely autistic folk suffer the same prejudice and should have a jury of autistic aware jurors or have access to autism behavior specialists to assist in interpretation of their behaviors and responses.

Having had input into the criminal justice system in the UK for folks with intellectual disability and/or Autism I can echo the lack of awareness at every stage of the difficulties faced by "non Neuro-typicals". Thanks Tom this is so important to bring to general awareness. Education for those in the justice system and the public hopefully will help along with support and teaching autistic people skills to protect them from these situations.

A great talk and so true. I have experienced this directly with the UK court system as an autistic person. I would be very grateful if you let me know who the UK specialist solicitor is that you mentioned, as I have been struggling for years to find someone to help. As a result I end up self representing, and as the years go on I am increasingly failing at the this due to mental exhaustion of the system.

yes I have been convicted for my autistic behaviour and accused of dreadful humiliating issues. Nearly killed and left disabled and £2m financial loss. No one harmed except me and my family. The misreported story is all over the internet. Eventually convicted for asking for help prior to 2 life threatening head injuries

So many differences about autistic people actually make the police and court judge the individual as guilty. Like stimming, because a crime is not a day to day situation they'll most likely be anxious and stim, the police then take stimming and anxiety as reasons to judge them as guilty. The police and court speak in ways that don't always make sense to autistic people, and nonautistic people arrogantly fail to acknowledge they misinterpret autistic people. As a common example, when an autistic person is a victim of a hate crime the police say "gather as much information and evidence as possible," then once the autistic person gathers evidence as well as information they're charged for gathering evidence as they were instructed. No eye contact, different body language and facial expressions, time to respond are all taken as signs a person is guilty. In a book I'm producing I'm spelling out to readers that the vast majority of suffering autistic people experience has nothing to do with autism, but stems from lack of understanding and mistreatment, including by the criminal justice system.

As an autistic myself, this makes perfect sense.

So. Very. Important. All true, yet, I would urge Tom to reconsider that autistic people need therapy, more that non-autistic need awareness and, ex. not touch anyone regardless of their sensory issues without their consent and such like. I have met couple of solicitors who are autistic themselves but are afraid of learning disability label and do not disclose that, and suffer, and burnout, and lose their jobs. Appeal to anyone reading; I am in search of an autism-affirming UK solicitor to represent an autistic person in an Employment Tribunal or if anywhere in the world to, at least, consult on self-representation. Tom, if you are reading, would be willing to apply yourself and help?

I find this spread of reason way too simplistic, looking for direct causal connections between discreet autistic traits and criminal offences. Isn't it more likely the correlation between autistics and incarceration comes down to a broader experience of rejection by mainstream society, a path of 'antisocialisation', and the reduced privilages, access to employment and social services, and the predilection to drug and alcohol abuse which such a situation can invoke?

Try not to say "have" Autism. Probably a slip. I do it too. 2:20
