Children can be misdiagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder when they're not actually autistic. In fact, there are other disorders that share certain symptoms with ASD but those symptoms are caused by different disorders, not ASD.
In this video, David Velkoff MD, Co-Founder and Medical Director of the Drake Institute of Neurophysical Medicine explains the problem of Autism Misdiagnosis, including how to tell if your child may be exhibiting symptoms of ASD, or symptoms from a different disorder like ADHD, Anxiety Disorder, Selective Mutism, Reactive Attachment Disorder, or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Our son never attended a daycare till age 5. Therefore, he suffered social awkwardness and anxiety. At age 4, the visit to the doctor resulted in a mild autism diagnosis, leaving us shocked and our lives upended. Yet, my intuition insisted otherwise. We relocated to our parents' house, and he started engaging in social activities. Two months later, we gathered the courage to consult a pediatric psychologist. After thorough testing, she assured us it wasn't autism but merely anxiety from limited interaction - a significant revelation and immense relief. Today, he's a healthy, typical kid. The first doctor, who misdiagnosed him, won't be easily forgiven for the pain and stress caused.

I have for years fought against a diagnosis. My son had HSV1 encephalitis at 6 days old and has a brain injury. Until you get to know my son you think it’s autism, then people realize he is actually really shy, like his daddy. He doesn’t have any social issues with including anyone in his world, you just have to show him you care (like most shy children). When being questioned during the autism screening she said “when did he regress” and looked at me like I was not truthful when I said “he never regressed.” she also said “how long are his outbursts” and evidently didn’t like the response “he doesn’t have outbursts.” He hates dr’s offices, which I don’t blame him. She didn’t take time to get to know him like I told her she needed to and he can read people like a book and didn’t like her. He kept asking for his little sister and she said “has nonsensical speech” when he doesn’t. Diagnosed him level 3. When he started ABA his first therapist said “he is not level 3 and actually doesn’t seem autistic at all” and she had a child with level 3 autism that is homeschooled because the school couldn’t handle him. She had worked with many children and said there were 2 children that she believed were misdiagnosed that she worked with and my son was one of them. I can’t imagine how many children are misdiagnosed

@@4everloved142 Many diagnosis are wrong today, and many autism organizations wouldn't get enough business to exist as there are not many autistic people who try to get diagnosed. But for exemple in my case I knew my autistic symptoms even before knowing that autism diagnosis exist. But I've allways had many friends and I socialized eventhought I usually socialize different as I don't like alchol, sports or dancing and my interests are different than most of people.

@@JBR-jc8xg Many with ADHD, anxiety or other disorders are misdiagnosed as Autism and then when you find out that’s not what you have they say “yes you do, it’s a large spectrum and you don’t have to many of the symptoms” it’s funny when Autism is one thing you don’t have to have any symptoms to have it. They’re diagnoses crazy today and then there’s people who are amazing at masking like you describe and go undiagnosed

@@4everloved142 I know many cases who don't have any symptom excepting the lack of social skills or friends. This is why I think many diagnosis are wrong if I compare them with myself. Because I have almost every described symptom and I just didn't know that the diagnosis exist untill very late. And when I was a teenager I had to try to mask most of my symptoms. So I also understand how difficult it might be to give a correct diagnosis in some cases. I have a cousin who had social avoidance but he is now very social. I've never had social avoidance and I've allways tryed to meet friends but It's hard for me to match with their interests. I think many professionals also think that autistic people don't understand emotions but there's no scientific evidences of that and they simply don't understand the difference between emotions and self interests.

@JudeHavina Some remedies or medical treatments can help to calm down or stop epileptic attacks in those cases, but autism cannot be treated because it is not a disease and the traits are part of the character. The cause is a different brain developmen and nobody can change that with any treatment. Autistic people are born with this conditions and it involves many differences in many aspects of life. Some traits can be advantages and some can be disadvantages

My providers never asked about my past and diagnosed me with Autism and it made ny life much worse. Then my psychiatrist heard about my abuse and diagnosed me with PTSD. And not autism and my life got considerably better.

sorry that happened. You might be surprised to learn that helpful treatments for PTSD are often helpful for those diagnosed with autism and vice-versa. There's often a fair amount of overlap in symptoms and requirements, not least because many autistic people suffer from trauma which can often be a bigger problem than the autism itself... The trouble is, a lot of common autism "treatments" aren't actually helpful for anybody! :(

Exactly. Autism is still quite poorly understood, but we know more about it than we did several decades ago. Idk when this video was made, but he failed to mention how quickly children learn to mask, especially girls (and any gender where child is high performing). Nor did he mention the pain and stress of a false negative, which has historically been WAY more common than false positives. A more balanced perspective is needed here. We need to focus on getting the diagnosis right for EVERYONE, not just the obvious & easy-to-diagnose cases.

I have seen many children with anxiety and ADHD predominantly inattentive who come for a psychological evaluation with a diagnosis of autism. And some parents, when informed that their child does not have autism, are not accepting it. I believe that there is a lack of understanding by professionals to differentiate the behaviors, and in Brazil there is an impressive increase of children, adolescents, and adults diagnosed with autism. It is unbelievable!
@drakeinstitute429
@drakeinstitute429 Год назад
It is also true that anxiety can be misdiagnosed as ADHD inattentive presentation because anxiety can also cause inattentive symptoms. A thorough clinical evaluation can help differentiate inattention caused by just anxiety versus ADHD inattentive presentation. It is also true that anxiety and ADHD inattentive presentation can both be present.

This video REALLY needs to be seen by physicians!!! Pediatric, family care, neurologists, etc etc It is a real problem the way they are way too quick to diagnose autism when it could be such a multitude of other difficulties. Have you found the EEG brain mapping to be helpful in diagnosis or treatment of ADULTS as well as children?
@drakeinstitute429

The quantitative EEG brain map is invaluable in both children and adults on the Autism spectrum in identifying the dysregulated brain networks linked to symptoms. It is the blueprint and guide in how to help patients with ASD using neurofeedback.

Thank you very much for this infornative video. I have 2 severely autistic sons, nothing bugs me more than these adults who run out and get an autism diagnosis, just to be getting it, the say "autism is a gift" Having autism is NO GIFT. If you have a child who is severely affected you would agree with me. So far I have found nothing good in my boys being afflicted with this disorder. In fact, I feel cheated in the fact that my boys will never interact with me or anyone else normally, drive, have a girlfriend, give me grandchildren. None of this is in the cards for our family and people really get on my nerves when they tell me that they are level 1 autistic and it is "autism is a gift". Maybe for you, but for us it is a 24 hour, round the clock hindrance to our family living a normal existence. People act like having autism is a fad. It's not. It's raw and it's real living our new norm. Live our life for just one day. Thank you. I don't mean to complain, but I just had to vent on this one.

Being jealous of other people with neurotypical kids and feeling like you’ve been cheated because of your son’s disabilities is always going to take a toll on your happiness. That mindset is also going to rub off on your boys. Show them that they can still be happy. Other families might not have an autistic child, but they might have something else they go through. Maybe they have a terminally ill child. Maybe they lost a child. You have no way of confirming who is struggling more than who behind the senes. Imagine how you would feel if you lost your sons. @strictnonconformist7369 Год назад
@@GroundhogBabyI'm an autistic adult, likely older than you are. There is no cure, it's not a disease, it's a neurological architecture that is pervasive to how an autistic person is: the only way you change it is to destroy them by destroying their brains. You have made clear with your comments that you see their intrinsic nature as a disease to be eradicated, and in practice, you (and everyone else) are sending a clear message to your son's that you will never be happy with them, and they're defective: you've pathologized them. Don't do that if you truly love them: help them become maximally healthy and happy autistic individuals instead of trying to make them allistics in visible behavior, as forcing them into behaving in manners other than autistic neurology does (called masking) naturally is extremely destructive and over time results in autistic burnout. If you think their lives are horrible, unhappy, etc. now, forcing them to mask and (especially) not do stimming like their neurology needs for regulation will have a far worse result. ABA with aversives is the last thing you should ever subject them to: if someone subjected me to that as a kid, that would not go well. I have had more than enough bullying from others in my life, people calling me names, physically attacking me, well, the people administering aversives (and those approving and supporting it) would all be equal in my condemnation, and would earn my undying hatred, to start. Consider carefully what your goals are: make your son's appear to be what you define as "normal" (as in not autistic from what you observe) or make them happy and maximally productive? At best, you may help achieve one of those, and the first option will irretrievably scuttle the second one, it's just a matter of time.

Thank you for this much needed piece of sanity in a diagnostic realm wherein identification of asd has run amok. The positive test result afforded by an EEG would be so helpful in sorting the current misdiagnoses that are creating widespread confusion at the personal, social and treatment levels. As a retired speech-language pathologist with 40 years experience I know how complex and nuanced it is to arrive at an accurate differential diagnosis of ASD. I find it so disturbing to be witnessing the self-diagnosis or misdiagnosis of this condition pushing out the numbers in this field of diagnosis, a function propelled in no small way by the availability of quite generous government funding for newly diagnosed adults with this particular disability. The EEG data would be so valuable for returning the number of diagnosed cases to realistic incidence levels 🙏🏻

Thank you, this is very helpful. I've looked up a few of these terms I didn't know before because I think I'm autistic and I want to make sure it's really not anything else. If someone want's to do the same I'll leave a few notes here about what I've found out. (maybe disclaimer: all according to Wikipedia) 1. Pediatric depression: Depression in children 2. Rett syndrome: If you're male you probably don't have it because male embryos with this syndrome usually die off. It's directly tied to the x chromosome. Very interesting read. I can see how severe cases of autism can get confused with this one. But since it's caused by a genetic mutation it could be detected fairly easily if you're directly looking for it, right? 3. S(P = pragmatic)CD: Problems with social interactions, completely separate from ASD with different diagnosis criteria. E.g. does not include stimming. 4. Hyperlexia: I've got that! Type 1 = Hyperlexia in NT people. Type 2 = Hyperlexia in ND/autistic people. Type 3 sounds like "kind of autism that you grow out of". But honestly, I don't get types 1 and 2. If you're autistic you can only have type 2. Otherwise type 1. Unless it's type 3. That's kind of redundant. But whatever. 7. OCD: When your brain forces you to do or think stuff. 9. RAD: Problem with social interactions caused by problems with your parents or caretaker at the age of up to 3. Many of those seem to focus on one specific trait though. So it's easy to rule them out if it's really autism or also something different that's more complex like Hyperlexia type 3 or Rett syndrome.

Its not that weird. Its certainly not the only factor, but people with autism have brains that are wired differently. If social interactions do not have a lot of friction, it is likely because the brain of that person is not to dissimilar to their peers, hence likely doesn't have autism. I have autism, as I have gotten older I have gotten better and better at social interactions, to the point where I far exceed what others are capable of doing both in terms of getting along with and understanding others. I still struggle in other areas which are now masked in the social interactions I excel at. However, when I was younger, even when I was in elementary school when I was super popular, I really missed the mark on many social interactions. Not having a good theory of mind and accurately interpreting what others are thinking and how they are thinking it is a near universal trait with those who have autism.

Hello my child who is now 18 had a huge trouble with decoding language and pratically I had to teach him talking. Now he can speak both french and italian and read both, but he does not speak fluently.I still working on his language skills.He has been classified as autistic, as he has not interests and he is oversensitive to animal noises. We did two Irm to the brain, but nothing special came out of it. Sometimes when I look at him he has such a normal way of staring at me that I have difficulty to define really his problem. He was born at 31weeks, maybe this had an impact. I am deeply convinced that his problem was mainly linked to the language codification and this really prevented him from fully blossom.

Research has suggested that environmental toxins may play a role in the etiology or causes of autism in some individuals. You can also have Autistic like symptoms but not be on the spectrum. Most important is to determine how the symptoms are linked to brain dysregulation that can be improved.

@EleaSuJa

So if you are trying to cope with multiple issues that look autism but are not. What do you do to get by? Do you just have to just settle with medication and advise that don't necessarily work for you? And how do you afford it when you are struggling to keep a typical job or even get one to begin with? Don't you have to rely on family back you up financially to keep up this lifestyle of so called therapy? It would definitely feel shameful as you will be judged by everyone who don't have an idea of what is going on behind what looks like a "normal person".

This sounds off, because I volunteer in a school that has a class for kids with autism, and they have long reciprocal conversations with each other, though not with kids from other classes, or teachers. There's like 50 of them (multiple age groups), they can't all be misdiagnosed, so there's something off here. Also, aside from all the neurofeedback stuff, there's a lot of much less tech-heavy and more behavioral and emotional coping mechanisms that help people with autism and I believe these can be just as helpful to a person even if their quantity and/or intensity of autism symptoms doesn't amount to a diagnosis. It's a grey area with an arbitrary line.

Overdiagnosed or misdiagnosed of autism, that's been going on for a while.
@eliad6543
@eliad6543 5 месяцев назад
..did you read what I wrote? They're *all* having perfectly normal reciprocal conversations *with each other* but not anyone else. That's not adding up with "overdiagnosed or misdiagnosed autism" because it wouldn't be all of them that way. To be fair, all except for one, but he only talks in single words, so we don't know if he could or couldn't hold a reciprocal conversation with the other kids since he'd need to use full sentences first. Either way, the other kids can't all be misdiagnosed, that's the only class for kids with autism in the city and the only way they could all be misdiagnosed is if every single correctly diagnosed kid in town was homeschooled, which, again, is statistically impossible. One city is still anecdotal but the takeaways are: it's not so black and white as presented in the video, and (given the fact that all these kids do face serious social difficulties) even stuff that doesn't amount to a diagnosis is worth addressing and even if thresholds are shifted it shouldn't be done in a way that causes people to be denied things that they do need with the label or without it. @@eagle162

@@eliad6543I did, some things are just black and white, this man here is not the only one bringing this up, some articles go over the problem with actual professionals misdiagnosing autism, even a doctor that helped broaden the term decades ago apologize for it and believe it's causing major problems. You can read here. "Doctor who helped broaden autism spectrum ‘very sorry’ for over-diagnosis" Just because some kids who have been labeled with autism can communicate with each other but not anyone else doesn't mean they actually have autism, certain groups of people with characteristics just have an easier time communicating with others,like shy nerdy people who can have decent conversation skills with each other but not other types of people.

They are empathetic and in touch with others’ emotions so maybe not in the social realm. Perhaps with sensory issues, yes…

There has been an OUTRAGEOUS amount of misdiagnosed autism cases ever since the 70's, and it continues even 50 years later to today, and especially with thia new trend of self-diagnosed autism, and ita just plain wrong and horrible for the people who ACTUALLY have autism and need our love and help and care

*their *you’re 🙊 You have no idea what I know and don’t know about autism. Most of my family is on the spectrum, I have a Developmental Psych Degree, and have worked with autistic kids professionally. I do happen to know what I am talking about, and this man is making an inaccurate statement about autism. Disagreeing with someone because they are wrong is NOT narcissistic 😂

I believe there is substantial misinformation here. Autism cannot be ruled out just because the child can have functional interactions sometimes. As an autistic person, I find this pathologizing perspective on neurodivergence to be ignorant of first hand level 1 ASD experiences. Misdiagnosis is more likely to flow in the opposite direction. ASD is highly conplex and varies greatly. *inclusion* of characteristics should be used, rather than ruling it out with a litmus test

No, this is such outdated information. People with ASD absolutely can have normal social interactions and reciprocity. If that is the main diagnostic criteria you are sticking with, you are missing so many ASD diagnoses. This is why girls especially are not getting diagnosed. It is MUCH more likely the ASD diagnosis is getting missed, and instead the child is being misdiagnosed with anxiety, selective mutism, OCD, etc.

Considering this is a new video, then it's not outdated. Since he is the physician and specialist, I think he knows what he is talking about. If your child can pass for neurotypical, then embrace that and quit trying to label your child for life. Work with what you have and be happy it's not severe.

@@GroundhogBabysure, let them ‘pass ‘ for neurotypical. They will end up like many adults in their 30-50 unhappy, overstimulated, etc. And get the propper diagnosis of asd then. The video might be new. But the information is heavily outdated

@@sconnection how does being labeled help you? That's my question. So when you're 30-50 your suddenly going to be happy as a lark because you have an asd label. I fail to see the connection. Sorry. You're still going to be as happy or unhappy as you are right now.

@@GroundhogBaby No you are not. Will the problems go away? Mostly no. But knowing your brain works differently than others can relieve a lot of frustration for someone with level 1 asd. They no longer have to wonder why they never fit in, or why they always feel different. Knowing you have ASD sort of gives you a basic handbook of things you can do to possitively make our life better. A lot of adults people with ASD who are undignosed are constantly burned out. But they cannot explain why. Why do things that don`t bother others bother them so much? Knowing you have ASD explains why. And can relieve frustration. You can find out what exactly triggers you much easier and can either find ways around it. Can more easily explain to other people why you would react differently in situations. Instead of them thinking you are weird. For example. My dad had been burned out quite a few times. Gone into depressions. It had to do with his work. He for example got very very frustrated when others could not understand what he was explaining. Simple (to him and me) sollutions that others could just not understand. At 55 he finally got his ASD diagnosis. He understands now WHY others do not understand him. It has taken away a ton of the frustration and he has not been burned out since. This not only goes for ASD but also ADHD for example. I always got into arguments at work with someone who got very angry and frustrated when I told him something he did not agree with. After 2 years of working together he found out he has ADHD. I being reading about it and he haven`t had that situation since then. Because I know when to let him be, and when to react. Because he has this 'label'. But because of this label I was given a handbook of why he reacted the way he did.
