Jill Escher, President of the National Council on Severe Autism, presents to the A-Team, May 27, 2022. Jill explores the crusade to neuter language around autism and intellectual disability, and why, for the good of our disabled loved ones, we must retain accurate language. It's not about semantics, she says, it's about consequences.

I definitely agree that this over-reliance on language is extremely dangerous. Best to use interventions that will benefit the adults and children on the severe side!

The thing is their interventions don't work. Mainstream psychology has made zero progress on understanding it and an anti-autism Manhattan Project would tell you that if you understand autism too well you have it.

Here's the thing. Autistic people are humans and abuse and hostility are never the answers. Many Autistic people have comorbid conditions that can often cause them pain and discomfort. When they can't communicate those things they become frustrated and may lash out. Many have sensory issues and biochemical reactions to things that you wouldn't think could cause those reactions. Whether low functioning Autism exists or not Autistic people still have a right to their emotional wellbeing. Anxiety and Autism often go hand in hand and that IS a societal problem. Avoiding unpleasant sensory stimulation and providing stimulation the Autistic person finds pleasurable is a key to their well-being. Maybe the Neurodiversity movement has gone too far but you have to ask yourselves this. Would it be such a thing if there weren't so many Autistic people being abused and so harshly judged? Why not join forces with the Autistic advocates with low support needs to try to help those with higher support needs? I'm sure the Neurodiversity advocates would welcome a calm and rational discussion where you could both put your issues across with empathy.
