For weighted blankets I cannot recommend Emma enough

Our youngest child is special needs. She had been diagnosed with a 2P14 deletion, autism, learning difficulties, delays, sensory issues and hyper mobility. As well as my personal faves, a sleep disorder, lack of pain response and no danger awareness. Its why I look terrifying a lot of the time! Ha

I have autism, I totally do that! It’s so funny because it’s like it randomly comes into your brain and you just HAVE to tell someone. It’s often at night and I just talk everyone’s ears off about some random thing that happened years ago

As an educator, this tips are expecially helpfull with neurodivergent kids, but some of them are lifesavers even with neurotipical children. Expecially the bubbles, they help a lot when kids have strong emotions, they not only are calming, but telling kids to blow some bubbles works better than telling them to take deep breaths

I have been autistic since i was little, I have SPD born with Spina Bifida and Cerebral Palsy and have very bad sensory problems. I have and use Chewlery in a shape of a blue lego block (as i always liked Lego when i was a kid) and also have a very cute chewy lion from a company online called Chuchumz and i always use ear defenders a lot plus i have and use 4 baby blankets. I will admit I also find sucking and chewing on babies dummies very helpful and helps me to calm down a heck of a lot as i've always been very aurally stimulated with my mouth and using them helps me even more then more then my Chewlery does. I do recommend dummies for autistic children if parents are willing for there child to use them regardless of age that's of course if there children want then. What is even better is you can buy Adult Sized Dummies online for older children and us adults and these can be very helpful indeed they come with a silicone teat normally. I will even admit here i regularly also drink from babies bottles as i'm very clumsy with cups mug and glasses and (have broken so many i've lost count) and actually find them difficult to use and always end up spilling them everywhere. I do have an adult sized twin handed cup with a drinking spout a bit like a trainer cup but i'm even clumsy with that as i spill and dribble the liquid out if the spout. So drinking from baby bottles with teats is a lot easier for me personally. I do realise that dummies and bottles are not very socially exceptabel when out in public so you may want to keep those for at home because some people out there judge but they don't realise what us autistic people go through in life a lot of us see the world very differently. I also wear adult sized bibs as i have always been very messy when eating and these can be bought online as well again they can be very helpful for parents with disabled children. Another thing is because i was born with Spina Bifida i am incontinent and have no control of my bladder i have been my entire life for 43 years now so i have never been out of nappies/incontenence pads if you will. My mum was great always very excepting of my needs both as a child and as an adult and my dad is still the same to this day.

We’re looking into a weighted blanket for Dylan and also he keeps asking for squishies so maybe Santa will bring one 😉. He used to love his pushchair and when we used it for his younger sister he would end up stopping her going in there so he could use it (this was before we knew about his autism, spd and anxiety). I’d be intrigued as to whether he’d use one again now he’s 6.5. Worth thinking about as he used it as a safe place when he was younger and when Ella had it x

As an autistic adult I would advise adult raising a royal, you can stunt her potential by programming limitations into her xx She will have a lot of strengths, push her on them.
@140Lumdee
@140Lumdee 5 лет назад
David Dunne we do. All the time. She’s exceptional, she’s brilliant and she’s talented. Bare in mind this is a video specifically to show things that help her when needed. That doesn’t mean it’s a constant. She’s not limited by them. When her hyper mobility isn’t as bad she doesn’t have the chair. When she’s not having a hard time she doesn’t use things like sensory toys but they are always there if needed. Also every autistic person is different. Where you’re able to comment on youtube etc as an adult, others very well may not be able to and that will have nothing to do with how they are raised.

I am autistic and my parents never put me in a wheelchair. Yes I agree the world can be a very overwhelming place but I feel as an adult that I am better able to deal with the noises around town because of it, though I still have meltdowns occasionally. But I am now very independent and Edith could be also if you don't cater to everything and eventually she will be embarrassed by that type of chair. The toys are awesome and so is the blanket. I also have noise cancelers and ear plugs. Oh I can totally relate on the fixation phases as I tend to drive everyone nuts with mine which right now is coloring books for adults.
@140Lumdee
@140Lumdee 5 лет назад
Crafty Tamara it’s partly for her sensory issues yes but mainly as she has hypermobility and hyperextended which causes her a lot of pain. Just this video was autism based so I talked about that aspect and not the physical issues linked to her chromosome deletion.

The blanket how are they with being washed? Do they come full size my son is 14. Still haven’t gotten the test results back for him. Hate waiting. I know he has autism and so does everyone else however it’s not been FORMALLY diagnosed. Also will be looking for that stroller chair. Wondering what is their biggest size. My nightmare that I knew would come with getting to big to sit in a grocery cart came a year ago. In store he gets way overstimulated and he could sit in the bigger part of the cart with a game headphones on and then he stay watching the screen tuning out the noise and sights. Now I am really struggling taking him anywhere because he just can’t handle it. If anyone has suggestions I would love to hear them
@140Lumdee
@140Lumdee 5 лет назад
Oh bless you. Yes the blankets come in adult sizes too ideally wash them on a colder wash and air dry it flat. Just be gentle with them and they last. We will likely put hers in a pillow case for out and about so it’s not needing washing as much. She has it on top of her duvet too.

Can I just say as a 30 year old who was dignosed at 6 with ASD and spisific learning needs I'm smart I'm very smart but the label special needs or learning needs toataly ruiend my life because my parent thought they had to get me into a special school get me special help geuss what I was in a special school all my teachers told the head teacher I was capable of doing my GCSEs the head said no because I was statemented and my parents thought I could do it but my mum is damaged and now needs counceling because she became so obsobed by being sorounded by other special needs parents and most of the parents children were not going to be like me and as capable as me and I've found in my 30 years sometimes groups for parents of children with problems can be quite damaging it's damaged my mum and it's damaged my friends mum the dad's no not at all but our mum's got so wrapped up trying to protect us and in trying to wrap me up in cotton wool it led to more problems I now have BPD part of it stems from bullying the other part is being wrapped in cotton wool but so far your doing a good job with your daughter so go on mum

Oh love. I am so sorry. I do worry that I over worry (ironic I know) but for now she’s in a standard school. The school have stated she will need to change to special needs school for her secondary education as she’d not cope with the structure of how the schools work and she’s behind academically by a significant amount so she is different in that aspect but I never want to cause more issues than I solve. As she grows she walks more. I’m getting her knee supports to help her so she doesn’t use the chair as much now. She does use the chewigems a lot but I don’t think they inhibit her. Same with the weighted blanket etc. But it is something I hope I am getting right. I just know she is her own person and try and follow her lead. Not what everyone else is doing but also open to trying things. Basically I don’t have a clue what I’m doing but I’m doing my best! Ha. I do hope you find yourself a bit more in your 30s. Feel happy in who you are etc. X

I’ll also add that being labelled dyslexic caused me issues at one school. They dropped me into special classes that made me miserable. So I left that school and went to another and never told them I had a learning disability. Thankfully my mum was supportive. And I got mostly Bs in my GCSEs. So I can only imagine how hard it was for you. I guess that’s why I try and be careful.

@140Lumdee
@140Lumdee 5 лет назад
Hello love. I may do in the new year but hypermobility is dependent on the person who has it. Is it just hypermobility or the syndrome? How many joints does it effect? Is it along side other health issues? So I cannot tell you if your daughter will need a pushchair for longer but if she’s struggles to walk far or is in pain after walking then maybe. Sorry I cannot be more help.
@NotAnotherKuromi
@NotAnotherKuromi 5 лет назад
It is a bit late but there are hypermobility groups on facebook which are good for information. What will help depends on what your daughters main problems are. Obviously try & keep your daughter as active as possible but you need to balance pain & fatigue with being fit & gaining muscle, which will reduce pain & fatigue in the long run. It is trial & error & listen to your daughter if she is old enough & able to communicate. There are a lot of parents on the hypermobility/ ehlers danlos forums (hypermobility, hypermobility syndrome & eds are in the same group but affect people to different degrees) & they all share what has helped them & their children.

Do you think a weighted blanket might work for a child that just doesn't sleep - no identified special needs as such just likes to wake up a lot! This was a great idea for a video and I'm sure will help lots of people x
@140Lumdee
@140Lumdee 5 лет назад
Yes! As it helps release seratonin which is is the sleep hormone. The deep but gentle pressure is a weighted blanket helps keep it being produced which in turn helps anyone with insomnia sleep better and does help frequent wakers from what I’ve read which is amazing.

Seat h chewigems on amazon and eBay. They have Lego shaped ones etc and they can help loads. Also ask Cahms if you can get slow release melatonin. It won’t give you 8 hours but it can help.

@@140Lumdee even if you made s little money off it at least we know its going to a good cause. Do you have a blog as well? My mom found your channel first- trying to h er lp me out through a few struggles & i thought she said you had a blog as well? I may be wrong. But im trying to take in as much as possible. We just learned of my sons struggles and it's really hard on me not fully understanding. I know that sounds horrible but i just dont understand it well, he's my first, and it took 4 years to figure out. We knew about the high energy but the sensitivity stuff still very new

@@abigailpavlik503 I honestly don’t know. I know it said would go up until about 12 years old but it was more about weight than height.

I am autistic I can’t listen to noise
@140Lumdee
@140Lumdee 2 года назад
It does seem a large percentage of autistic people struggle with that. Out of my 3 kids only the youngest struggles with almost all types. The eldest can’t deal with crowds but past that is fine. Middle child is fine with crowds and noise. Husband is ok with most noise too. But we are an odd family. 😅

Why do u have a push chair for a seven year old even with autism I’m autistic and I stopped being a buggy at a reasonable age probably
@140Lumdee
@140Lumdee Год назад
She’s not just autistic. She has a chromosome deletion and hypotonia, hypermobility. Which sounds odd but there you go. But even people with just autism can struggle and need a safe space even as an adult & use chairs etc as a means to cope out and about. Not every autistic person is the same. Not every autistic person struggles in the same ways. She now uses a wheelchair for long distances. And that’s ok too.
