Thank you for this video, I learned a lot about food in the Rhine Main Area. I' m from the "Ruhrpott" and there are some similarities like Rouladen. My grandma made them as well and I miss her very much. Now I'll watch the video about you visit to Phantasialand. I' ve been there once about 40 years ago and I still feel overwhelmed😅
Mmm yes I love Rouladen so much! Thanks for watching these videos! Phantasialand (any theme park really) is very overwhelming! I need to make sure to protect my hearing as much as I can and take lots of breaks and avoid waiting in lines, but it's still a lot. I wanted to stay all day because I love rides but I think I made it less than half the day each day, haha.
Really enjoyed this! My Grandma was German and made rokrout, phefferkougan at Christmas. Sorry if the spelling is incorrect. The food looked good but I would be afraid to try raw pork. :-)
Mmm you are lucky to also have an Oma to make you German food! Raw pork does feel wrong out of that context yeah, haha. But I trust the German butchers that I go to.
Oh my goodness, I'm so glad I finally made some time to watch this!! I love that regional or traditional food is a special interest we have in common. :) I know a fair bit about East Asian regional cuisine, but not that much about Europe! We really need to go on a food trip together sometime... It sounds like you had a pretty good time in Germany even though you got sick, and your mum was such a good sport with you filming and everything. The bit about the hand cheese makes me think of a old recipe for a soft cheese in Italy where they apparently have to blow into the the cheese to make a little balloon to put fresh curd into, and the story goes that the cigarettes that the cheesemakers used to smoke imparted flavour into the cheese... eek. I'm not really sure I'm brave enough to try that! I feel like I've never had carraway in isolation--what does it taste like? Is it sort of aniseseed-y, a bit minty and sharp? The "music cheese" anecdote is so funny, and I think pretty demonstrative of German humour... it feels like you have so many sayings that don't shy away from how gross life can be sometimes and that that's nothing to be ashamed off, a sort of matter-of-fact way of life. When you talked about the fresh light wine I thought of the fermented apple juice before you mentioned it later in the video! Someone else I know who is also from Germany told me about it this week and it made me really want to try it. It sounds a bit like kvass. It's really sad we don't have more similar things here, though I guess kombucha is sort of hip now. I really want to see someone make spaghetti ice... the version you had was made with actual ice cream, but there's also apparently another dish where you use actual pasta and strawberry sauce! I can't quite remember what region it's from, but I saw it on a RU-vidr named Beryl Shereshewsky's channel--I think you would enjoy her videos a lot, she does a lot of regional food and explores different cultural takes on things in a really curious, respectful way. The teatime ritual your mom talked about I've heard about in Sweden as well (which makes sense, since they're so geographically close!), and I wish people took their time here more and weren't always in a hurry to do something in the name of being "productive." Of course I really want to be able to buy ready-to-eat sausages by weight that easily, LOL, and I really really want to have mettwurst again! I found it here just once at a charcutier's, but they closed down! I wonder if you went it a good butcher they would be willing to find a safe cut of pork for you and grind it fresh so you could spice it yourself...
I would LOVE to go on a food trip with ya. Regional food is really one of the best things (if not the best thing) about travelling. Lol I hadn't heard of this cigarette essence cheese. I think if presented that I would have to try it out of curiosity. I'm not sure how to describe caraway, just medicinal and bitter and I way I don't like, and lingering and overpowering. Sometimes I like medicinal and bitter but not like that. Oh yes I think people who like kombucha might like those things as well (probably even more since they are sweeter). Ooh ok I want to see this pasta and strawberry sauce, ill have to try and find that. If you look at the ingredients of Nibs candy, thats like a sweet soft pasta in a way. Yeah we are missing out on some of these more ritual and tradition based things to take time out for ourselves, that a lot of other countries have. Could probably get a butcher to make that here yeah! It's just not as fun when it becomes expensive but would be worth trying. thanks for watching and for all your thoughts! 🙂
Have you thought about taking video footage of some of the ecosystems, the ways that people get around on foot or transit compared to Canada, etc.? I feel like RU-vid is heavily dominated by western culture and civilization practises but maybe that's because of where I'm tuning in from… If we learn from one another it seems to me we could solve so many problems… In other words I think it's cool that you have the opportunity to share another part of the world with us here! :-)
thank you yes I think we are on the same wavelength on this. It's a huge privilege to be able to travel and see all the small cultural differences that we take for granted. Things that we could change to make our country better if we even realized that it would be possible. I did make some clips on this topic, but i'm not sure if it's enough for a video, but when I go back I definitely want to make something like this. Thanks for the suggestion!
