Great chat! When Isabella said that because of slower processing she has trouble keeping up with herself, I so resonate! That gets me into trouble time and time again. Whether it be over-sharing, staying in any given situation too long/working too long which leads to exhaustion, or over-committing, etc, etc. I love "Autistic People Talking"!

I really breaks my heart how much time I spent masking alone in my room because I thought the mask was me.

yes!! around 52:00 about not knowing in which ways you process things slower or faster than others. that is a huge reason I feel I need to be officially diagnosed, because I feel like I am an unreliable witness to my own life and all the problems I've had communicating with others and understanding relationships and social interactions

Great podcast! I have seen Isebella's channel and of course your channel Claire. Hearing you both describe your journey helps give me some peace. I am new to this journey at a young 70. Things were always a struggle but now I know why. First was the now I get me and now I am in the hard reflective phase and finding I am so focused on the Autism state of mind now. So now I am on this similar wild mental journey which your podcast relates to so much. You gals are great. Thank you for your openness.

Another conversation that is really resonating with me..I totally relate to the self-diagnosis route. I know what I want to do as far as validation goes, but finances leave it out of reach at this juncture. I am hoping that could change soon but loving hearing from someone that gets the struggle to seek diagnosis. Thank you, Isabella, for sharing so bravely and thank you, Claire, for having this great podcast. So helpful!

Insightful conversation ladies; lovely to meet Isabella and hear the similarities in our experiences! 😍💛 could identify with a lot especially the nuances of self identification, struggles to figure out needs and just impact of masking 🖖

I feel judged and invalidated by some of my family. I was technically diagnosed by strangers in support groups for Klinefelter Syndrome when I didn't really fit in there. I feel totally validated by the Autism community and fit in well online. Those of my family who I cannot talk to about Autism, I've asked them to just accept it and, well, basically, shut up. I don't want to hear their judgements and invalidations. It's rather upsetting really, I would like to talk to them about it, but I just can't. I don't understand why they think that they know better than me. They are not experts in the field. I've lived feeling like this for my entire life.

Claire, I’m sure it’s still a work in progress, but I’d love to hear what you’ve learned about making and maintaining friendships, and how that compares to your approach growing up. Autistic people definitely need some guidelines! No one spells it out for us like we need them to.

It’s really encouraging to hear that you are learning about friendship - I asked for advice on this as a young adult but other people just seemed to have an intuitive approach, as a 40 year old I still don’t understand how it works - I’d love to see a video on what you’ve learnt.

I had an assessor who was abrupt and rude also! I knew more than he did about autism- from my son and my 2 years of research. It was an "uncertain" result. I'm still learning of Autism and ADHD. And I've learned more about myself. Now I'm on an assessment waiting list with a reputable organization.

Hell yeah, Isabella. We need that self-identified autistic representation. Good for you. I’m self-identified as well, with confidence as absolute as my belief in gravity.

Really appreciate this interview. I relate to so much of this. Definitely before I knew about neurodivergency I felt like my life was very bleak. It still feels like that a lot, but it's getting better. 💕

Grateful to have listened to this dialog. I hear myself in both of your stories. One concrete reason I am glad to have formal diagnosis is that it was required for disability accommodations at work...even tho all I really needed was no strong smells, controllable lighting, and freedom from horrendous machine noise that plagued me daily before. Basically just needed to move to a better office...but my psychiatrist had to sign stuff for me to ask for that. Diagnosis definitely can be useful.

I meant to write “got my own number” as in: I see what I’m up to and why. It’s Mr McGoo bumbling around and bumping into the world. Then finally putting on the correct spectacles. Thank you, both for your openness. ❤

There was a lot in this, but it was interesting to hear what you were saying about keeping up with conversations as I have started to do the other thing. If I am in a conversation and I get to speak about anything I have started to apologise for backtracking and backtrack anyway. Maybe I have just been lucky with the context, but it has gone ok.

The struggle before the diagnosis, is like stumbling through life "squinting" and then being told " you need glasses", and when you get your "glasses", life is easier. You see things more clearly. You can walk and not stumble as much. Your eyesight still sucks, but you get the tools (i.e. glasses) you need to help you function better in the world around you.

None of the therapists at my clinic have disclosed their neurotype to admin but the vast majority of them are neurodivergent at this relatively large clinic with about half of them open about it. The most common job area for autistics is psychology so I'm guessing there is probably about a 50 50 chance of finding one who is neurodivergent (whether they know they are or not, much better to find one that is self aware so their isn't a wall there).

I haven't listened to this autistic people talking episode yet but I thought of another idea for someone else to talk to/ to have more diverse voices represented which is always a wonderful thing! ru-vid.com (also sorry Claire if this was the wrong place to put this suggestion!)

It has been tiring. We do need to figure out how to optimize our lives so that we can best contribute. The image of us being keys that will fit certain locks has been coming to mind, lately. Is it called "spikey traits" that could be like the teeth on a key? Too simplistic?
@StarShade-l7q
@StarShade-l7q День назад
Maybe a faux speaking stick might be helpful? And Isabella I have said "This is long but stay with me" so many times or some variation. It's refreshing to be able to talk and listen to fellow Autistics and our specific communication style. For example when y'all were talking about the difference between NT norms and how they have an overlap with ND norms but they are different enough that they can cause us stress and trauma. When soldiers march over bridges they make sure to not step in time because that can create a resonance that will build and build and has and will cause bridges to flow like a wave of water and break. So that concept but our ND mental patterns are slightly off from NT and when we can't make the allowances we need (not marching in step with the NT folks) then the resonance will build and build and take us out. Usually a burnout but sadly we have a much higher rate of the final option.

Claire, kinda sad lol but my experience with “is this seat taken” is more someone wanting the seat for another table because clearly I didn’t need it.
