People are weird sometimes. There is benefits to self-diagnosis and sharing information in the community. The health care system is not always the most supportive. I got diagnosed in 2015 and most help have come through my own research and from others. My doctor gives me my medication and my nurse who i talk to the most does health checks. Not much beyond that. Getting a diagnosis is first of all a way to have someone help you find the right questions. To self-diagnos and get tips from the community can help you in two main ways. One, you have more to talk about with the "expert" and two, you can do stuff on your own when you start to understand yourself more. Using different tools to make things easier. Self-diagnosis is not self-medication. We live in a world where it seems perfectly normal to but weird untested products inside your body. To pay loads of money on products that sometimes are complete fakes. People are playing with their health daily by ignoring the things they should pay attention to and choose things because "it feels right". When it comes to substances you put inside your body, that can be so dangerous. And people complain about self-diagnosis? To understand yourself is in a way a form of self-diagnosis. To understand your brain and what you need to function is crucial regardless of why you do it. Neurodiversity or not. Its about finding tools as i said to make things easier. To have a better understanding why some things dont work and why others dont. And to find things that noone have thought about before. Also, as a neurodiverse person it can be really destructive to follow advice from neurotypicals. And if you are not aware of your neurodiversity then it can get even more complicated. Again, everyone benefits from going deepeer into themselves and to understand more. Just dont try to self-medicate. That is dangerous. Sorry about the long text ;)

Hi Claire and Taylor. I'm a 57 (58 in May!) male in the UK. I received my autism diagnosis in February of this year, and while it was certainly a huge relief, it also sent my mind into turmoil (more so than usual!) I was relieved in that it explained so much about the person I have always been, and a lot of things make sense now when I think back to how I was as a child and growing up (not fitting in, knowing I was pretty intelligent, but not being able to get my head around certain subjects and ways of "normal" life etc). I have come out as autistic to my closest family members and some friends and work colleagues, and I have received so many positive and loving responses. I never want to take those people for granted, and I realise how incredibly blessed I am to have them in my life and the support network they have helped to create. There are so many things I could talk about regarding my experiences and of struggling throughout my life, but it would read like an entire Game Of Thrones book series! Anyway, I just want to finish by saying I really value your videos and I have been made to feel so welcome to the community as a whole. Thank you!

That was fun to watch. It warmed my heart to watch You two be happy with the other❤. And when I thaught "Conflict! I get hungry, but I don't want to interupt watching this." Taylor said she is hungry top. And then it was funny to watch the difficulty of ending, like the described "change of states" I felt so much. (I hope that doesn't come out mean, I don't mean it rude).😊 Will make some one-pot linguine with vegan porree-cream-sauce. God am I hungry now! Have to do a "comment-stop" at minute eight: Taylor! Claire! You give us sooo helpful content for FREE. I am very thankful for that. I am educated, feel validated, get entertained. Again: for free! So why couldn't I accept and understand that You HAVE TO earn money with it to do it professionell? That seems to be unfair to me! Second comment-stop at minute 12: I say "shut Your mouth, pleeease" to these people. Nobody in decades of medical professionels were able to see that I am autistic, even when I was diagnosed (after my "loud chaotic class-disturbing" son was) with ADHD around thirty I obly got the diagnose, no explanations, no meds, no therapy (for my son it was paid). I would have died not knowing WHAT IS GOUNG ON WITH ME without You ND-YTers. Should it be different? Yes, of cause. But until it is different we badly need You!

I may be in the minority, but I don't care what degrees or certificates people have. I care about if they truly understand what they are talking about and my experience in college showed me that a degree does not equate to that. People should make arguments about what they disagree with instead of asking what your credentials are to discuss topics. Its kind of shallow to do that. Like you two mentioned, we are very good at researching topics
@MomontheSpectrum
@MomontheSpectrum 3 месяца назад
I tend to agree with you. There are a lot of people with degrees who spread misinformation. Ask questions, clarify, do your own research...

Myself, I am trained as a mental health "Peer worker" and I am a firm believer in the value of sharing one's "lived experience". I gain more, on the whole, from my peers than I do from medical professionals when it comes to mental health and my neurodiversity. (ASD2, ADHD combined types, "2e" and cPTSD).

Late diagnosed female here. I was diagnosed officially about 2 months ago. In two weeks, I turn 39. I received an autism diagnosis AND adhd, but I self-identifed as autistic for about 3 years (only ever discussed it with my husband.) What led up to it was suffering from a 5 year long burnout-I’m still not completely out of it. I’ve been seeing psychiatrist and therapists since I was 14, and I just can’t figure out why it was never a considering. Like many other women, I was a given a bipolar disorder diagnosis that I do NOT feel like it fits me (what was being termed as depression and mania was really me cycling in and out of burnout, seasonal depressing, meltdowns, adhd energy.) unfortunately, no one will remove that from my diagnosis list, even though Neuropsych agreed it was unlikely I have bipolar, and my one “manic” episode was during ED weight restoration (severely underweight.) like nah, my body was finally getting energy for my adhd and anxiety to surface. I appreciate BOTH of you so much.

Great video! Some of us may benefit from clear guidelines for comments, even a video on the topic if anyone is up for making one. Who better than autistic RU-vidrs to help us sort out the etiquette, right? There's a lot of talk about unmasking and perhaps some people, myself included, while trying to just be ourselves & not stress so much about if we are "doing it right" may bring up topics we shouldn't. Our intentions may be to help or connect (while unmasking) but perhaps we do harm or are freaking you all out (& so, so sorry if I ever have.) I'm sure you can imagine how hard this might be for some of us.

About the opinion that only medically-trained people should teach and guide people who are autistic and seeking for help/understanding : autism isn't an illness. Of course it can have medical repercussions or co-occuring conditions like eating disorders, anxiety, depression, OCD, migraines etc that should get medical attention, but not all that we are have to be seen through the lense of medicine. It's like pregnancy isn't an illness, it's a normal biological transformation for which the human body is generally perfectly equipped to deal with in the everyday life of the pregnant person. You don't see anyone saying that only medical professionals should guide and teach pregnant people during the pregnancy… We are the people the most able to understand our peers and sharing has always been a HUGE boost, maybe the only one, for knowledge propagation among the human race. In fact in my country, while our general education about autism is in its infancy, there is a job that people can do that's called peer-helper which is something akin to a civilian non-medically trained consultant to a medical team of professionals. Peer-helpers help people with the same condition as them and create a bridge with the medical team to get a better view of the issues that the person has and how to help them. Usually these people also educate the public about their condition through civilian charities and social/support groups.
