Auto-By-Tel: The Most DELUSIONAL Super Bowl Commercial EVER

The first dot com company to advertise at the Super Bowl was way in over their heads, and in hysterical fashion, I might add
Calling yourself the next 1984, as in, maybe the greatest Super Bowl ad of all-time, and one of the greatest advertisements of all-time, period. Spending $2.5 million, or over 25% of your revenue (not profit), on the spot. Moving the goalposts significantly when the ad gets panned for being bad. You won't believe the story of Auto-by-Tel's disastrous Super Bowl XXXI ad campaign

They did the Super Bowl advertising equivalent of doing nothing but spiking the ball into the ground on every single play.

E-Trade did a Super Bowl ad that just featured a chimpanzee and 2 doofuses clapping to a boom box playing La Cucaracha, finishing with words on the screen saying, "Well, we just wasted $2 million. What are you doing with your money." That might have been one of the best minimalist Super Bowl ads I've ever seen.

I hate SB commercials that throw everything at the wall in 30 seconds with one or multiple has-been celebrities and at the end you want to boycott the product for such a stupid ad that doesnt understand what humor is. Sometime less is more.

The 1984 ad actually aired in Twin Falls, Idaho in the last few minutes of 1983. Apple wanted to position itself to win advertising awards for 1983 which would be awarded early in '84. Thus they picked a market and a channel where Apple thought nobody would be watching.

Pete Ellis should have stuck with the advertising formula he used for his car dealerships in Southern California back in the 1980s. Yes, he used animation back then as well, but those ads, which in comparson make the Autobytel ad look like "1984", made references to classic cartoons that adults would have understood. Also, his jingles were earworms and are still stuck in my head 40 years later! 😂😮

So funny to respond to this and very sure the poster has no clue the net results for Autobytel….i can answer that because I was the guy. Yep! The one he criticized. First off it cost less than he said. Second is that our servers went nuts with activity and subsequent future quick business growth. Next the public and dealers knew we came to play. Following the ad our dealer count and income exploded and we went public. Along with that every manufacturer flew in their private jets to Orange County as now they were worried about future..,they were right..car buying changed and you would have to be ostrich with head in sand to not know it. Yes the ad was goofy but is not the point as could not afford huge budgets….it worked. And within a 24 month time the company was worth just under $1 billion dollars and bought its largest public online competitor. .Not a bad move nor investment ! A BILLION was a huge number in those years. So get your business head in order rather than sensationalism for sake of saying something you have little real facts.. Is was fun to reminisce however. Oh it was not delusional it was positive automobile history and changed car buying forever. Thanks, Pete

it's true, the animation does look like a religious cartoon, a cheap one...in fact i think i recognize the cartoon, but it's name isn't coming to me. Plus the ad's pill bottle would make sense if you were advertising prescription or non-prescription drug delivery online...."need nonprescription drugs but can't go out to get them, we have the cure, Auto-By-Tel, we are the online drug delivery website, we'll even bring them right to your house"

Honestly I don't think the ad is that terrible, not like that shoe commercial (which you can learn more about by clicking the card in the upper right hand corner). It's not 90s Super Bowl level (which I'm convinced was the best time for Super Bowl ads, possibly due to nostalgia, possibly because I haven't had half the ads spoiled by the companies posting them to RU-vid already (looking at you Paramount)), but it wasn't atrocious (though I don't remember it, maybe because it's from one of the 2 worst Super Bowls of my lifetime)
@brianarbenz1329

SUGGESTION: What's your take on those surprise "I'm going to Disneyworld" ads at game's end. I believe Phil Sims in '87 was the first to do that. That such a promotion could be worked out with two teams' players and the camera crews for the ad been given free access to the field bespeaks how advertisers' revenue runs the bowl.
@fromthehaven94
@fromthehaven94 5 месяцев назад
The stuff about needing five seconds out of a 30 second to get people's attention has some validity. Having said that, some of my favorite ads include the AT&T ads where and individual who didn’t get their calls is juxtaposed with a version of themselves in a situation that results from not getting that call. One of the ones on RU-vid includes Ned in Finland who goes ahead with a work meeting about a merger, but was going to be told to not talk about. Sometimes, simplicity works, unlike the abomination of a Super Bowl ad by Autobytel.

"The Simpsons" was not the raunchiest cartoon out there in 1997. There was another one that was far rauancher than that on MTV and it was even rated "M". Perhaps you have heard of it. It's called "Beavis and Butthead". There is another cartoon that was out there that finished its original run, but was still being aired on MTV and Nickelodeon in 1997. Its called "Ren and Stimpy". You did not do your research at all.

You're selectively applying 2024 data to an analysis of something that happened 27 years earlier. None of it is valid. Heck, at one point, you're talking about the attention span of Millennials. In 1997, Millennials were just kids. And none of the data points about customer acquisition cost today means anything to then. That first commercial was horribly ineffective, the 1998 one at least conveyed what the business was about.
