Watch a video about auto-enrolment.
Who will be auto-enrolled?
Employees who earn a gross salary of over twenty thousand euro a year, who are aged between 23 and 60, and who aren’t currently in a pension scheme will be automatically enrolled.
This includes employees on all types of employment contracts who meet the criteria, so those who are full or part-time workers, casual, seasonal or on probation will be included. Employees who earn less than twenty thousand euro or who are aged below 23 or above 60 will be able to opt-in to the scheme. Employees who have a current pension that they and/or their employer are paying into through the payroll won’t be able to opt-in. This is because auto-enrolment is being set up for people who don’t already have a pension, not to replace the existing pensions industry. Other cohorts like the self-employed and those who aren’t currently working for an employer won’t be enrolled, and won’t be able to opt-in initially. This is because payroll systems will be used to determine eligibility and to calculate contributions, and these cohorts are often not on a payroll system.
