So yeah, Autobahn is the most euro euro game i've played in a very long time. Lots happening here and i think its one of those games that if it gels for you, will be a big hit. I'd probably personally play either Brass or Gaia Project.

"For something faster and less complex, try Brass Birmingham." Yikes!

Definetly a fit for me. Is here on my shelf. You did a great summary of the game!

I loved this game and kind of reminds me of the game play for Terminus. They will sit side by side on the shelf. Different games and mechanisms, but the same kind of feel.

I totally thought to Terminus when I saw this video. I have the opposite reaction though, in that I have no interest in these mechanics (though the theme of Terminus is exactly what I love!). Ah well, to each their own. Glad you enjoy both!

As someone who hasn't played Brass Birmingham but has heard about it a lot, you saying that it's less complex than Autobahn makes me really think I'm not up to this game's challenge
@3MBG
@3MBG Год назад
That's possibly fair, but i also think brass' complexity is over egged. I play it with some folk who really do not like most heavy euros

I really like the concept in this game. It's going on the shelf for sure!! Lol thanks for the great review!

I understand why they avoided the Nazis, but at the same time, it would have been really interesting to see them try to implement it around that. Going the route they did, without it even mentioned, and the board being so delightful and colourful, it seems odd...
@3MBG
@3MBG Год назад
well, they mention its the post war era in the rule book. And, well, doing a nazi era is just a bit off. Power Grid did the same thing, focused on the era post war as a rebuilding/new building time.
@MassDefibrillator
@MassDefibrillator Год назад
@@3MBG Ah, right. Obviously you wouldn't do the same game if you were doing Nazi era, would be weird to just have the same game and say "you're the nazi's building roads, have fun". I just think it would be a really interesting design challenge, and make a really unique game. Make it slightly alternate history, with themes of trying to undermine the government, possibly make it similar to "Auztralia" with it being competitive network building, but with the Nazi party and war representing some common threat. Or, would be extremely compelling to me if they additionally went the other way a bit, and they integrated some theming about how much the private business elements profited extensively from the Nazi party, with mechanisms around their use of mass privitisation etc. Though that would be difficult to get right and still have a game people wanted to play; but history is not pretty like that. But I was under the impression that most of the major road construction from scratch, that this game is about, was during the Nazi era? So the comment that this is set after, just seems a bit lazy. I've never thought of power grid as being set during a specific time or circumstance, seemed too abstract to me.
@3MBG
@3MBG Год назад
Power grid is very much Germany post war, hence why Coal and oil is up first, nuclear comes along mid game and renewables get more viable towards the end. Im pretty sure that's part of the design intent in that one

I played this once...and don't plan on playing it again. Too long, too fiddly, and actually not thematic enough to hold my interest. (If you're building the Autobahn over 70 years, your lorries are literally moving at a snail's pace!)
@3MBG
@3MBG Год назад
Hahahaha, that last bit is legit funny. It's such a game conceit. Like how in civilization a minor war in the ancient era actually takes 1200 years.

@@3MBG Heh...I wasn't being entirely serious with that complaint, but Christopher Nolan would definitely be proud of the different layers of time in this game and how they interact. (Rather Dunkirk-like.)

Brass: Birmingham is faster and less complex in comparison? That's saying something 🚚
@3MBG
@3MBG Год назад
Brass isn't what i consider a real heavy weight game. It's not an On Mars or Gaia Project. And this one is heading towards that level of complexity
@timdertim
@timdertim Год назад
Thank you@@3MBG. On the surface Autobahn looked a bit like Power Grid to me, but I understand there's more to it. Brass: Birminham isn't a heavy game I agree, still a good bit of rules density I'd say. Learning All Bridges Are Burning atm, I'll get there lol

Played it once, but don't plan to ever play it again. Had high expectations but found it too fiddly and dry. Also, iconography could have been better, and personally don't like its graphic style. I recognize however the value when it comes to interesting engine building and how the area control really matters. But at the same time it really takes multiple plays to get the best out of it, plays that I'm not willing to invest into.: overall it feels they were not really sure what kind of game they wanted to make, so they glued a series of mechanisms together but didn't particularly develop one or the other. Not for me.
