The Canon AF35ML in many ways was technology ahead of its time. Despite its noisy exterior, the mechanics of the CCD-based triangulation was an example of Canon trying out new technology in pursuit of perfection.

Thank you so much for sharing this. My ML is aparently in very good condition, but the AF is wrong. First, it doesn't work all the time. I suppose it confirms with the red led symbols when it works. I tried in many lightning condition, on different surfaces and distances, but it's just not consistent. Landscape is the default, and most often confirmed. Portrait is very difficult to get, and sometimes it confirms instead of landscape (far subject). This makes the camera useless, or only available for landscapes. Such a pity that this nice 40/1.9 lens cannot be used at its potential... I wish I could at least improve a bit and use a pre-focus - recompose technique. But no matter I do, I can't get the portrait, only accidentally. I think this lens would produce the best results at close distances...

+Paul P I'm having the same problem with my AF35ML. The focus is all over the place. It has such a great lens though.

I recently got one in very good condition. But mine is the reverse to yours; my camera does NOT do landscapes. Only portraits :/

well, maybe you're luckier. I'd rather do portraits with 40/1.9 than landscapes.

@@gregoHybrid It's good to know somebody has the same issue as me. I'm so disappointed about my AF35ML and it's focus system. In my last film I got like 4 good photos, and the rest (landscape photos) absolutely out of focus.

Canon AF35ML, Minolta Hi Matic AF2 or Leica Mini? I want something that has a good depth of field and the focus must be sharp! Which film camera should i get? Thank you!
