This microscope uses a digital X/Y stage controller for positioning and a separate camera system for imaging. Because the two cannot directly communicate, automated slide scanning is not possible with the commercial software that comes with either device. This video demonstrates a work-around I used to create an automated slide scanner from this system.
A Python scripts sends serial commands to the X/Y stage controller to control positioning. The script then moves the cursor, clicks, and sends keyboard commands as necessary to to acquire images and save them with a filename containing X/Y coordinates.

Scott, how do you entrap a fixed sample quantity on the slide to measure cell count?

This sample is a slice of tissue. This setup is also not used for cell counting. Together, this means all I need to capture is an image of the whole tissue. Hope it helps!

@@swharden what kind of slide do I need for automated cell counting with microscope and phone? Every time I look for a slide for what I want a hemocytometer comes up. Could I use a hemocytometer or would the etchings affect the image captured by the software prior to running the counting software?

@@irishguy200007 If you want to count cells in an image, you can use ImageJ (FIJI). You can also use FIJI tools to assemble many partially overlapping images into one very large image so you can count cells on the whole slide. There are excellent FIJI tutorials for how to do both of these things. This technique will work even if the images were captured with your phone, but these software will not run on your phone itself.

@@swharden thank you for that I'll check that out. i currently have software that counts but I need to know if I can use a hemocytometer to hold the sample being analysed or can is there a slide that has groove cut into it to pour the sample into. I have ordered a hemocytometer which is used for manual counting but can I use this hemocytometer for automated counting using the software? The hemocytometer has grooves or etchings cut into the channel for counting but would this interfere with the image of the sample taken by the sample?

Sorry would etchings on hemocytometer affect the image taken by the camera.
