It is hard to beat a good-looking inexpensive accurate watch that you could daily rather than a safe queen that costs a bomb to service/repair/replace waiting for that 'special occasion'. Only thing better would be a box full of them

Great video Dave. I'm a mechanical engineer and love seeing a quantitative comparison like this. Love your collection. I am never going to spend more than a couple hundred bucks on a watch and $50 is more my comfortable price range. So your channel is perfect for me. I think you have a beautiful watch collection and great taste.

Nice collection and video. My opinion you can find really nice chinese watches. I collect divers and brands like Pagani, Addiesdive, Loreo, etc....are just great watches. I used them for long time and even go to swim with them and still work great. I recommend them 100%

Nice! Yeah there’s definitely something to be said for those brands and more. I’ve learned that they are great watches and will hold up just as well if not better than other watches on the same price range.

The amplitude needs to be at leat 275 before you put it on the timegrapher. You then need to leave it for a few minutes. You also need to set the lift angle correctly on the timegrapher. I regulate all my watches to within +/-10 SPD and it takes 5 minutes.

Mine is a cheap Automatic from China, Forsining for only 35 U$ (bought last year). It similar to Patek Phillipe Chronograph Geneve with date, day, month and 24 hour display. I had manually tuned it with handphone stopwatch for 3 days and now, wolaaa .....: The accuracy is pretty good, +15 sec/day in Horizontal and -10 in Vertical position. I wind it up 10 to 11 turns every 6AM and 6PM a day. Combine that position and wearing it for work, it can achieve_, +/- 5 sec a day,. After a month of using, my watch still exactly the same hour and minute with world clock reference.

Good collection... Any homage watch collectors should learn how to regulate an automatic watch and it is quite simple with the right tools. I am able to regulate all my watches to + - 2 sec a day. Low entry deluxe watches like Oris and Tissot are already factory regulated down to 2 to 3 sec a week...

Hi Dave interesting review , it goes to show that some of the cheap homage watches can give you value for your money. The other thing I would like to say is that when people say about getting rid of all your homage watches and purchase one none homage I think what they are really saying is don’t buy Chinese. But I no a lot of people out there that enjoy watch collecting but can’t always afford the so called more expensive Swiss or Japanese watches. So keep doing what your doing because you can’t please everyone

Hello,i find a pagani design submariner wich have this movement, miyota 8215, this watch has had the seiko nh35 but for a while pagani switch to this miyota...anyway, it is a good and trust movement? It is reliable,or the seiko nh35 is better and reliable than miyota?
@DavidSchwartzjr
@DavidSchwartzjr 3 года назад
They do both have pros and cons to them, the miyota movement is a fine movement, but the gripes with it tend to be the noisy rotor and the lack of seconds hand hacking. The NH35 is more robust and reliable (in my opinion) but the acceptable specs in terms of accuracy on it can range pretty wide from something like -20 to +40s/day. I do have to say I have not had any issues with miyota or seiko movements. I have had issues with seagul movements. Hope that helps!

There's a little more to the timegrapher readings. Cheaper movements will have more positional variance. This means your readings will change when the watch is in a different position. A couple of your watches had very low amplitude readings. This either means you didn't fully wind the spring, or something is wrong inside the movement. A couple of them also had a high beat error. Ideally, the beat error should be below 0.5.
@DavidSchwartzjr
@DavidSchwartzjr 2 года назад
Yup! Spot on, I’ve since this video learned all about what you have mentioned and this will definitely be helpful to new timegraph users/owners. I will need to do an update video too showing these watches that I’ve kept from this collection in different positions and after being fully would and on the timegraph for a few mins to see a more accurate average between all positions. Thanks for the comment! 😎👍

Hello Gabriel! Sorry for the late reply message, but the strap is actually an aftermarket one which I had picked up from Amazon here: amzn.to/368CiuE I had gone with the 24.5mm but I ended up having to shave the sides a bit so I should have ordered the 23mm from the start. Own one watch... A real enthusiast knows the difference between watches and the purpose of different watches and the different types of venues that each watch fits in. Business Watches, Casual watches, Performance Watches to Dive watches. One watch really dont fit all occasions. And there are certain type of watches to wear during different types of weather and time of day. One watch, No... its best to have a collection. It can be 5 dollars to a million watch, what ever you like for your budget.

Did you regulate the watches for optimal accuracy? The NH35 movement is capable of +-15 seconds or better. I have a 1965 Rolex Oyster that gets no better than 10-15 seconds a day. My Chinese field watch with a generic NH38 movement is about as good. In fact, since I can easily service/replace the NH38 movement myself, it is much better than any Rolex.

Thanks for the measurements ✌️ I have the AP like watch (the skeleton one with the Hangzhou 7500 ), this one is really accurate for a high beat cheap movement, I got pretty same measurements as you (+5s/d -2/d depending on the position) On the other end I have a Hangzhou micro-rotor watch from a Chinese brand too (I think it's the 5000a) it run decently on a timegrapher (like +15/25s a day) but since there is no manual winding not so much in real life if you don't wear it enough on your wrist, it's still very good but not Swiss-like.
@DavidSchwartzjr
@DavidSchwartzjr 3 года назад
Hi Alex! Thanks for your comment and for sharing your experiences. I recently had come across some brands with modified Hangzhou movements and I've really been impressed with them. Of all the watches I've purchased, all of the movements are still working fine and luckily none have experienced any magnetization or large shock absorption that has affected their movements. I'll keep doing some research on them. I'm familiar with that micro-rotor one you've referenced also, really cool to see the Chinese offer that type of movement at such affordable pricing. Cheers! 😎🍻👍

Part of the fun and satisfaction of wearing a watch is periodically adjusting it via a time beacon; it's an integral part of wearing a watch. This test is rather unscientific because the watches are not running their best; if you run an accuracy check on a watch that's barely wound or at the wrong lift angle, you're going to get bogus readings. Every watch enthusiast knows that a $5 Walmart quartz child's watch runs at about +/- 5 seconds per month, and your smart watch/phone is off by exactly the same amount as the international time beacon or server to which it links. They also know that no mechanical watch on the planet consistently achieves that kind of accuracy. Spending thousands on a Swiss mechanical because they're more accurate is like buying a Bentley because it has more leather.
@DavidSchwartzjr
@DavidSchwartzjr 2 года назад
I can definitely understand where you're coming from, Ranger! Quartz definitely is the way to go in terms of the NEED for a watch to tell the time. I did run this test a long time ago, when I had not known as much as I do now (still learning of course) so I should have made sure the watches were fully wound and then take the average between positions to get a bit more realistic idea of how accurate they can be. Love the Bentley with more leather analogy too ha. Cheers! 😎🍻👍

If I like a watch, I do not care who made it, or how cheap it was! To all the nay-sayers: The Swiss are possibly the nation that is best at cheating and con-tricks in the world! They shut out competition with their chronometer certificates, but many of their watches are Swiss on paper only, with all sorts of loopholes in their definition of what makes a Swiss watch. I would rather have an honest Chinese watch, than paying a new car's worth money for a Swiss time piece.

90 percent of these youtube watch "experts" are full of shit. An only make videos on watches that cost 5,000 dollars an up. They make money off everything they do an the lies they do. But anyways, nice video. One day you might get tired of owning that many watches an just want 1 or 2 watches. Me personally 2 or maybe 3 watches at most for my desires. I own 2 watches. They are japanese. Both of them are orient stars. One dress watch an one diver. My advice sell them all. An get your self a good quality watch that fits your comfort on price stage.

Lol, yeah I think I misspoke, I meant to say out of all, only one is Swiss made (at the time this would have been the Frederique Constant). My collection has changed a lot since that old video though. I do appreciate the chuckle from the comment though, Greg. Cheers! 😎🍻👍

@@DavidSchwartzjr yeah, i like digging up graves :p so, how about long-term repeatability rather than one-time accuracy? which ones tend to jump all over the place and which ones are consistently fast/slow? that would be way more interesting - it's easy enough to regulate up or down if it's stable.

Look I have nothing against the purchases you made and if you do enjoy those watches then there is no problem with what kind of collection you have. Who am I to judge you. The only thing that is apparent with Chinese watches is that most of the time they are lower grade. Yes they have copied the Swiss watchmaking and half a century of work and can have very accurate watches. Heck if you care about accurate watches get a Quartz movement. Its not about that. (watches like that are impossible to service) those brands most probably will disappear in a couple years and it will be difficult to impossible for you to service them (outrunning the cost of the actual watch).Its about serviceability, brand heritage, value for money and most of all QUALITY. You won't get good quality on some of those watches because the lack of care and attention put into the watches is apparent. So this is a nice video but it really doesn't tell you anything about why not to buy or buy Chinese watches.

Hi Emil, thanks for the comment. So I definitely understand where you’re coming from. I wouldn’t say this video was to try and convince anyone why they should or shouldn’t buy a watch with a cheap Chinese or Japanese movement, but really just to compare them in my collection and see what type of accuracy they offered. I would say this though, all of the ones I’ve kept still work, have not had any issues, and they can definitely be serviced for a very low price. Most watchmakers would be familiar with a Seiko NH35/35 movements, Miyota movements, and seagull movements that if they could not service, I can buy online for very cheap to have installed. I have learned from owning many watches that the Sellita and ETA movements are definitely better to have, but for these cheaper Chinese and Japanese movements, they work just fine and give the charm of an automatic movement to those who may not be able or willing to spend a lot of money on a watch. Im working towards obtaining my Tudor BlackBay 41 which has a modified Sellita instead of in house movement because I want something that I can have serviced by most watchmakers instead of having to send it to Tudor or Rolex. 😎👍

Definitely not my cup of tea when it comes to watch choice but the comparison is fun lol Also you dont have to buy one or two $10k watches... there are hundreds of highly collectable, quality timepieces in the $250-$1000 price range that are beautiful and well built and dont NEED to copy a watch at 10x the price point..
