Hi, I almost have an appointment to do a flush for my Nissan Quest 108,000 miles for the first time and found this video. I did a drain and fill twice last weekend and feel it runs smoother now. Thanks for sharing this video.
Thanks dial2fast for making all these video's on your 2004 Nissan Quest. I have learned to do so much by watching your video's. I have a 2008 Nissan Quest SE, and it is a little different than your '04 at times, but none the less I manage to figure it out. lol Super thanks, you have saved me hundreds in repair cost.
Thank you! I am a 65-year-old female and you're explanation of how to find what I needed to on the vehicle as well as recommendations for purchasing the fluids were absolutely wonderful! I will be changing my transmission fluid by myself with your wonderful guidance! And again, thank you so very much!
While watching your video, I noticed that you were using the same set of ramps as I did. If you still have/using them, before the next use, please check the reverse/under side structure for any hairline/stress cracks. Get a new set if such cracks exist... In my case, I used those ramps for my Civic and Odyssey oil changes (never overloaded them), after 3~4 years of use was when I noticed the stress cracks - since I don't like my head flat, I replaced my ramps with a heavier duty set. Thanks to all of your great videos and thumbs up to ya!
Thanks again for your excellent videos. I've watched a few, including the one to replace the LCD (liquid crystal display) as mine no longer showed the odometer or temperature or fuel level. $20 and your procedure and has been working for 5 years since I made the change. I have an 04 SL 4 speed AT. Am doing the second ATF change at 185K miles. First one used Valvoline Import Synthetic ATF recommended at the auto parts store for my vehicle at around 100K miles at an oil change place. 11 years and 85K miles later no issues, despite the long interval. Going to do myself and use Valvoline Maxlife -D-1 synthetic ATF, available at the local O'reilly (out of stock at all the local Walmarts).
I ended up buying the K fluid for $128. I thought it best just to use the manufacturers brand as I am afraid mixing Max life with the K would be asking for trouble. I am only doing the 6 quart method, then doing it now before winter, then again in the spring. I have no idea when my transmission fluid was changed on this vehicle. It has 144k on it and no shifting issues. Better safe than sorry. Your video's have helped me a lot. Thankyou!
My '06 model S calls for Full Synthetic. I use Valvoline "Max Life" red bottle ATF. Clearly states on bottle for Nissan/Infinity Matic D/J/K/S. It can be found at Wallmart for $19.99 a gallon. I use it also in my power steering system also and flush at the same time. I go 40k between changes. Love the drain and fill option like you because it easy and much cheaper than a flush option most shops use which can cost around $150! I now have 97k and still going strong. Thanks for the fog light trim detail because those were very close in shape and for only 12 dollars I will easily attempt to cut them also! I done some chrome work to mine also but have bullet grilles in front which are very nice!!
dial2fast Yes indeed! Your Quest is very nice! I got to post pictures of it for you. One last thing they really messed up the body style on the new Quests... sorry had to vent a bit.
"about 6 quarts . . . you don't want to overfill this." Another way to prevent guessing and overfilling is to pour your old fluid into a measured container for recycling with the clear visible strip on the side. By doing knowing exactly how much was drained you can then put exactly the same amount back in. No overfill that way.
If you unhook one of the coolant lines the high pressure side then you can change all the fluid at once by draining it and adding some while you drain it
Excelentes videos desde el lugar de la llanta de refaccion de la van nissan quets y la forma de cambiar soporte de motor y cambio de aceite de transmision y como utilizar los asientos de la quets gracias saludos desde guadalajara jalisco mexico.
I am curious about the transmission filter. I planned on doing he fluid and filter change, until I saw that there are several pan bolts that seem impossible to get to due to the k frame being in the way. So I skipped on the filter and just replaced the fluid for now. Have you change the filter before on yours? If so, how?
Thanks for the Quest videos, they really help. Will you do a transmission filter replacement video? I know I tried replacing mine before but ended up ditching it cause it was hard to remove one of the transmission pan bolts. One of the cross members was blocking easy access to one of the bolts, if I remember correctly.Maybe you could check it out next time you do the next drain and fill.
I don't believe the transmission filter is meant to be serviced. I have done it for older cars I had before and it's quite time consuming. Thanks for asking.
Hello Peter, First of all, I'd like to thank you for all your great job, hi quality HD videos, and detailed explanation. About week ago, I bought Nissan Quest 2007 SL and for that reason I found your channel. Everyday, I spend many hours watching your videos, which I find very interesting and useful. Could you tell me where can I buy that washer (Video 4:21 ) which needs to be changed. I am really bad at automotive parts. One more time thank you so very much and God bless you and your family!
+Max Saidov You can buy those copper crush washers at your local Nissan dealer parts department. They use the same one for both oil drain plug and transmission drain plug. They are cheap like 0.20 or .50 each.
Thank You very much your video has been very educative and helpful, i am hoping to be a an auto mechanic technician soon, but how can i know the deference between a 4 speed transmission and a 5 speed transmission engine
excuse me sir, I have a question. I have a 2007 Nissan quest and I don't know if the previous owner had changed the transmission fluid yet. the mini van has around 110,000 miles on it and I checked the fluid and the color is reddish still and it's not the brown color in your video. I was wondering if I should do it or not because I have done transmission fluid changes in other cars in the past that was running perfectly fine before and then after I done it not
A simple drain and fill should not effect the operation of the transmission. If the fluid still looks good (colour), then maybe wait a year after putting some mileage on it. Keep in mind the new fluid is bright red, and you can also smell the fluid if it has a burnt smell.
I'd like to thank you for this video. It's really helpful. I've question, my Nissan quest 06 SE delays response when I shift the gear to D, Do you have any idea what's the cause? I would be really appreciate it if you did. Thanks a lot for your time
Thanks for the informative video. I have an '07 Quest with 170K miles. I've owned it for a year. Not sure when the ATF was changed last. Can the filter be changed as well, or is it not necessary? When I went to the parts store to buy the filter, they said the transmission had to be disassembled to get to the filter. Also, is there a Supertech ATF for matic K? I'm having trouble finding that oil, along with what size or part number for copper crush washer.
The tran filter is not serviceable according to Nissan, so don't worry about it. If you have a hard time finding the oil, just get it from the dealer, that way you know for sure if you got the correct fluid.
Do you know where is the heated o2 sensor fuse for that car? Few months ago I had some small misfire than I replaced all 6 coil and plug. Misfire is gone but idle rough and showing po057 so I replaced the bank 2 sensor 2 but car steel show the code and steel rough idle!!
hello I have a question as whether the oil for Transmit is correct because the buy said automatic transmission fuid if I could help please because the label also says DEXRON III or MERCON just want to know if they are correct and if neceaario change Filter hope and I can help thanks
It's a chrome fog trim ring from Ebay for a Nissan Qashqai car. I had to do a lot of cutting and put on some 3M double sided tape for it to fit. So not exactly peel and stick.
I want to change the transmission Fluid on my Nissan Patrol Super Safari 2006, but I'm a bit skeptical about the exact ATF-FLUID to use, since in the manual it stated to use only the Matic-J from Nissan, (But of course we all know all car-manufacturers are always saying that), and my little problem is I don't know the exact equivalent of the "Nissan Matic-J ATF" which is very hard to find. Any idea? Some said Matic-J is actually made by Castrol and its thesame as Castrol TransmaxJ, Motul ATF-1A, or Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF. But not sure about the info. Maybe for those who tried already can offer a little more infos?
Hello 2 fast, did you have any problems after using the Super Tech/Valvoline Max Life and how long have you been using? Getting mix messages that you must only use Nissan Fluids. C
Never had a problem. The Quest had a 4 spd and 5spd tran. Mine was 4 spd. Make sure you are using compatible fluid for the tran. Also any tran drain/ fill done on a high mileage vehicle that has never had the tran serviced can cause problem. Not because of the new fluid but you could be stirring up sludge.
Picked up a 08 SE Quest with 110k miles. Noticed a shifting issue at 20mph. Going from 0 to 20 ok. But it down shifts. Is it safe to change this fluid or just keep burning gas to the transmission self-destructs?
Jumping to a diff. topic......What kind of coolant/ antifreeze would you use? Im doing a flush in next few weeks, just want to know if the green prestone 50/50 from walmart is the same as the green color ones from the dealer$$$. Thanks
The Prestone longlife antifreeze is more of a yellow gold color than the regular green type. Many imports now have their own high mileage coolant that is blue. All these colors are just a dye they put in. I personally use the Prestone longlife in the yellow bottle from Walmart. Also use distilled water to flush and mix (if you using concentrate) which you can also get from Walmart. The dealer longlife antifreeze is expensive. I know the Honda one is like $15-$20 a gallon.
Hey, thanks for the videos… question what is considered high mileage for the quest in order to use the high mileage oil; also what kind of ramps are you using they look rubber. thanks again!
High mileage is a marketing thing for oil manufacturer. But they usually say around 75,000 miles. The ramps are Rhino ramps I bought many years ago, It's sturdy plastic with rubber feet.
High mileage oil typically has some additional anti ware additives added to the base oil. If you do regular fluid changes as suggested by the manufacturer, you don't need it.
+Francisco Vera 5 speed AT uses Nissan Matic K ATF fluid (different from the 4 speed). I believe you can use Valvoline Maxlife ATF - YOU need to double check it first. The service manual say 5 speed capacity WITH torque converter is 7 7/8 US qt or 7.4 L. This is including fluid in torque converter, so a drain and fill will be less since you are not draining the torque converter. Best thing is on your first drain, try to measure how much fluid came out. Torque converter may contain 3 qt.
The SE should have came with a 5 speed AT. According to searches on the net, it's a hex bolt run under the transmission cooler (this big round cylindrical drum with 2 hoses). Check out this picture on a Maxima forum. Yours should be the same: maxima.org/forums/6th-generation-maxima-2004-2008/597683-re5f22a-transmission-fix-28.html
Just bought a 08 Nissan quest with 127,000 miles , I am going to be changing transmission fluid, I'm not sure if it has original fluid (I don't know the cars service history) my question is if I buy Valvoline max life ATF, is that bad to mix or do I stick with Nissan fluid , also vice versa because I'm considering buying the Nissan brand.
if you are unsure, check with the 'parts' department in your nearby dealership, and they will tell you which proper fluid to use. If you use Nissan trans fluid, you will be 100% safe.
Do you have any knowledge about removing and replacing the transmission pan for the 4 speed 04 Quest? Is it as difficult as it appears? I.e. Adjusting the frame to get at the few bolts that's not easily accessible? A shop quoted $800.00. Thanks!
The transmission pan should be replaced by just removing the bolts and pan comes off. You will need to get new gasket and bolts. Service manual said not to reuse those bolts. Torque new bolts to 69 in-lb.
dial2fast Thanks for your quick response. On my vehicle, at least two bolts are inaccessible because of the front frame almost bumping up to it, as you can see from your video's transmission pan shot underneath. Is there a trick or tool that I can use to get to them. I've changed the oil pan and it was easy to do, but it just looks like the frame has to be unbolted to get at the trans pan, which the shop said was a 2 to 4 hour job, if the bolts don't break. Thanks!
I haven't looked underneath recently, but if there are things blocking the bolts, then your only option is to start removing parts. Not sure if there is an easier way.
+Zain Abidin Besides the actual transmission looking different, I know in 04, the Quest S and SL had the 4 speed while the SE had the 5 spd. I think starting 05, the Quest SL and SE came with 5 spd, while S still had the 4 spd.
there is a plaque on the driver side door sill, bottom right corner, says manufactured by nissan and in the transmission section RE4 means 4 speed, RE5 means 5 speed. Also, mine being a 5 speed had Nissan Matic K printed on the transmission dip stick.
i went to get a lubric change and ask for a drain and fill of the transmission fluid. However the guy told me that it was a bad idea, without giving me a reason. My van is 2007 nissan quest over 200k miles, do you think i can get a drain? or nah?
+bernardo rivas A drain and fill can be done anytime as it does not stir up any sludge from the bottom of the pan. Some shops have flush machines that can cause a lot of damage on high mileage vehicles. The shop you dealt with probably just doesn't want to deal with any possible headaches since you are at 200k miles.
+Karz 4 It's not listed as a serviceable part in the Nissan service manual and Nissan dealers also don't replace it. If people want to pull the pan and replace it, they can.
It may not be listed but why would someone change the fluid and not change the filter? You don't change your engine oil w/o changing the filter ,do you?Makes no sense. And when u said it's not "serviceable" I don't take it as "u can change it if u want to" , I take it as either there is no trans. filter or it's one of those cars where u have to take the whole tranny apart to get to the filter. So if I go to a Nissan dealer & ask 'em to replace my trans. filter they won't do it? Any particular reason behind it? I'm not trying to argue with u,just curious...
