I've been having a bizarre exposure to White Coat Syndrome (WCS). It was so high that my dentist kicked me out of his chair and told me to see my physician about my hypertension. On pubmed there's plenty of studies of WCS, but really nothing about treatment! What's weird is that it isn't strictly fight or flight. It was 161/93 at the dentist but my pulse was only 56! Honestly, I don't feel afraid of going to the dentist or getting my BP checked. At home yesterday it was 126/73 and a 71 pulse. I ended up getting an ARB, a diuretic, a calcium channel blocker AND a Xanax just for my visits to the dentist. With all that I got away with a systolic of 147 next time at the dentist and I passed the screening! But what a clumsy treatment for WCS it was.
