Part of the nose diving issue is from how much drag the front of the boat is making. He should really model his airboat hull after an actual airboat. Flat bottom with a gradual slope on the front.

A way you could increase some efficiency is by sloping the bow forward like on commercial flat-bottom boats. As the boat drives forward, the slope lifts the bow of the boat out of the water helping it drive faster.

Ohhh, you missed an opportunity to streamline the hull design. Yeah you mentioned why, but you'd remove a lot of the stability issues by using a tried and trusted basic hull design. Especially for the purpose as a camera platform. Double the length of the hull so it can better handle the weight of your equipment. When you get a design you like, a layer of fibreglass over the foam for impact resistance. Anyhoo, still cool 😎
@austntexan
@austntexan 4 года назад
I was thinking the same thing. Just go with a basic SUP or shallow draft Skiff shape. They're specifically designed for this type of water. Put a couple skegs in the back.
@BikingVikingHH

I too am confused why he continually uses these ridiculous hull designs, like he doesn’t know how hydrodynamics, or aerodynamics work for that matter, considering he’s been building airplanes for a decade lol
@77Avadon77
@77Avadon77 4 года назад
@@BikingVikingHH I know right, you could use virtually any basic monohull or catamaran design and it would be better then what he's coming up with. Heck just buy a RC sailboat and turn it into an autonomous boat. The scale is also way too small for anything--but glassy smooth water. And I don't know why he uses props? Maybe for fear of getting caught up in the weeds if he used standard propulsion
@Endelin

@@77Avadon77 Your guess is correct, his first version had props underwater and they kept getting caught up in weeds.
@blaircox1589

2:17... It seems to me the way to solve the Full Power nose dive would be to tilt the propeller motors up at a slight angle. This would push the rear of the boat down at full power. Also... put a proper bow on the boat. It looks like you're pushing a brick through the water. You would no doubt gain power efficiency gliding more easily through the water.

I think the best platform you could look at if you want to keep exploring this would be a SWATH. (google SWATH hull). Wouldn't be disturbed by the waves so much and would be substantially more efficient so you could get away with a larger boat with same powering. A larger boat would automatically reduce the relative wave size, reduce the pitch problem and reduce the relative mass of the camera and its effect on trim. What about some horizontal servo actuated vanes to dial the thrust vector with a gyro like the electric rocket. That part should be simple for you.
