Now if you add a metal detector and gps based mapping software that records each detection for you to go back and find the metal later-Then you have something! Something I invented years ago, you made it possible and automatic once this is perfected. Think of it: you could have this autonomously find metal in large areas, taking most of the leg work out of the equation. Excellent videos, I watch them all.

For marking, a solenoid controlled spray can, or small flags, fired into the ground, might prove simpler to manage as you don't have to use mapping. Pair that with a a random search pattern, and you'll have detection from multiple directions, to make detection more reliable. Leave in a field for a week, and check the markings armed with your pinpointer only. Could use different colors for ferrous and nonferrous?
@Saxutin
@Saxutin 4 года назад
I have done metaldetecting for years, and i can say this wont work like you said. You need to move detector side to side like once per second. That needs a motor system and causes wobble. Then, metal frame and wires will cause interfearance with the detector. Also, you really need to hear the signals from the detector by yourself so you can skip like nails and stuff like that. That come only with human experience. Cool idea tho
@PKMartin
@PKMartin 4 года назад
One small suggestion for future missions: doing a loop course will stress the motors on one side a lot more, if you turned your waypoint mission into more of a figure 8 it would even out the work both sides are doing a bit. I love the idea of this bot just trundling around in a field all day, hope your Barbie gearboxes make things work!
@buckstarchaser2376
@buckstarchaser2376 4 года назад
I made a "battlebot" type robot with those kind of motors and won second place against much more sophisticated and expensive competitors. In the end, my choice of surplus, used batteries (batteries were not very affordable back then) is what failed and not the motor packs. I think the only reason that they were not commonly used back then was that they had non-standard drive outputs and 3D printers were not a thing. I ended up taking a welding class, specifically to make adapters for them.

@@tigeroll that design works fine for flat surfaces with predictable traction, but if one wheel falls in a hole or spins, there is no backup traction to get you out. Maybe ad some little feet actuators? Then if the program detects the GPS stays stuck in one spot too long, it could cycle those every now and then to lift the whole vehicle up and set it down again to try and get it un-stuck. Might help with the treads digging through the ground. Other than that, perhaps two sets of bogies and some free-spinning wheels that aren't driven to spread out the weight more? It'd end up looking more like some kind of rover yet. Also I don't see any problems with the new gearing. Just that the plastic it's made from could shear if it's loaded up enough. (Depends on what kind of traction those wheels could get.)
@Heuamoebe
@Heuamoebe 4 года назад
This is awesome! Consider using wheels with grousers like the Mars rovers. Should work well on soft terrain. For a smaller rover this size I would increase the grouser size in comparison to Curiosity to like 2cm with a 10cm wheel diameter. A simple wheel like that should be 3D-printable as well!

You should use the Mars rover suspension. And then the back sets of 2 tires on each side would be connected by chain so 1 less motor and then expand the solar panels another foot on each side with a down angle 38 degrees the rover would have the rover suspension in the back and don’t change the front. If you don’t/won’t have a sensor you should put bumpers. 👍 Thanks for reading.

Not sure if you are responding to posts, because I have a question about the 'autonomous solar rover'. ? Why did you choose the type of skid-steering versus other types of steering? I'm guessing it made it easier to follow the GPS way-points. I'm slowly working towards a GPS, FPV drone aircraft. I have some experience with rc planes and one helicopter. I have been accumulating some Arduino and Rasberri Pi boards, and associated parts. Also, I purchased a 3d printer in February, 2021. I have a ton to learn. I have some cnc, Bridgeport, and lathe experience. And a tiny bit of welding experience. I love the autonomous Tupperware boat. I saw a post regarding a company that offers drone support, especially when making delieveries. My 1st. thought was your videos and which direction you went in after graduating from college. 'Technology Demonstrator'. My ultimate goal is aircraft, but it would make sense to learn on the ground versus losing an rc plane, and more importantly, the electronics. Thanks for the videos, they have helped give me some direction, advice, and motivation.
