Autopilot Stops Working 😧 Stressful Sailing (Canaries to Cape Verde) | Ep. 56

In this video, we have a quick tour of La Gomera, meal prep and get ready for our passage to Cape Verde. We had 750nm to sail - and the wind was going to be quite strong. Worst nightmare hits when we lose our autopilot - we quickly realise how tough the passage could be if we were to hand steer the whole time. An intense passage - with strong sea state and wind. Lots of things to fix underway, we try our our round sail and spend most of the passage cooped up down below! We make it to Palmeira in Sal after 5.5 days at sea - a speedy passage averaging 6 knots.

Alex casually vlogging on how the waves have been very weird, very big and short while the ocean is loose and rolling big behind her!! Epic!! Another great film

By showing the downs as well as the ups and being totally open and honest about it, you expose the truth of being outside your comfort zone; so your courage opens up adventure, living life to the full! I have noticed so many people doing this, and this gives me huge encouragement to follow my dream of living a life on the water too! With many stops in places I would not otherwise visit probably, likewise yourselves I imagine! Thanks for sharing again. 😌🙏

Well done getting through a tough passage together - and thanks for showing it as it was, and how it felt… Alex skirting the very edge of bursting into tears really told the story!

Well that was certainly exciting!! Autopilots, every vlog I watch has problems. I guess with a million minor adjustments to stay on course just applies to much wear and tear on stress points. Alex, sometimes you just have to lay down and pull the covers up. Sorry the stress got to you, but man stuff was just not going well on multiple fronts. Thanks for taking the time to share. This seems like a great time for a little ice cream.

Wow, so proud of you guys! I suffer from ‘sailing anxiety’ I get stressed every time we take our boat out - I really enjoy watching you overcome your problems and hope that one day it might just rub off on me. Xx

That round parachute sail is interesting. I like things outside the box... I really like your yacht. The classic cruising yacht wins over the plastic charter types, any day... IMO''...

Does it ever feel like the boat wants to tip over. I realize it would take alot to flip it but I am curious if it feels like it because it certainly looks like it. I grew up around lots of fresh water and so our boats are not only much smaller but their physics of technology and how they are built is so different. Most of them are flat bottoms with just some very small channels for water to flow and allow the boat to bite the water for turning or for laves we have some v bottoms as we call them , and lastly we have some with hauls like pontoons but due to how our waters act we don’t have any fear of flipping but ocean boats, yachts and especially big ships it never made since to me how they don’t just flip right over due to their shape and it wasn’t until last week that I learned that it’s the keel I think it’s called and the weight that is placed at the bottom of the boat in the center that keeps them up right by essentially pulling down on the boat causing a resistance with the monhauls buoyancy of the rest of the boat because without that weight due to the way the ocean rolls boats would have to be extremely wide not to flip but then they would just break to pieces due to the force and pressure of the ocean bending under it causing so much strain on it everywhere. So I realize now what keeps you up right. But to me watching it remind me of a fishing bobber that rocks back and forth but it stays up right because the stick that goes through the bobber also has weight under it to keep it up right lol. I don’t know if that makes sense, but I would be scared to death of the boat flipping over in the rolls. It’s cool how monohauls are designed though to stay up right . If that keel came off though my thoughts of boats then becomes true. It never made sense to me and now that it does make sense it’s even scarier because if that keel came off you immediately flip over and over only seen escape hatches on catamarans and trimarans. If it came off guess you would have a min or two before it flooded out and sunk but then I am wondering if you would be able to swim out with the water rushing in. Wondering if you would have to wait for it to fill up before you could swim out and escape. Anyways , the coffee has been rambling. I would constantly be checking that keel and it would give me nightmares all the time thinking it could come off because I googled it and it does happen and most people do not survive because it causes the boat to flip and there is no time to do anything before it slips below the waves and goes to the bottom. I would want to have some sort of vests that I sleep in that has a rip cord that inflate to be massive that if i sunk down 100-200 feet that it would get me to top within 10-15 seconds. I would have my emergency supplies with some form of bag that inflates as well. Ok I’m done! Let me know if it feels like you are going to flip though, because I plan on leaving life on land being and one day hope to be out there free as a bird

I didn't know McGyver was a verb. Great job. Now, where are you going next and will you have better winds or smoother seas? And thanks for showing how it is done. Why no coffee? I ran out of caffeine at sea and felt horrible.

We've found (and heard) that coffee can make you feel more seasick! Also when we're sleeping at strange times on passage I wouldn't want it to stop me from being able to sleep when I want :)

Do you have a weather vane navigation system for a backup to your autopilot?
@NavikaSailing

This would be ideal, except it's just a bit out of our budget so we don't have one on board. But yeah you're right would make for an excellent back up

Love the look of this sailboat. Seems very steady. -- QUESTION -- What percentage of time when travelling are you sailing vs motoring? Also, realistically, how fast does the wind need to blow before you can turn off the engine??
